4206F is the code pertaining to this recall.

3305G was the code for the Thermal Damage recall.

IC......looking like we might miss this recall in Australia.

I've been watching the OS forums too.....no sniff of a recall anywhere else either at this stage.

You lucky buggers might get to keep this one all to yourselves....maybe share it with the Canucks??

I get to answer my own question!!

This is all the info we have to date, it also says customers will be notified by mail if their vehicle is affected. I will keep you posted on any further updates.
So....they get new plugs (maybe) and a new flash. Hmmmm.

yall remember the majority here will not qualify for a new engine. And the reasson may be only that you drive your car in a differant situation than others---more highway, less stop and go, cooler ambient temps etc. Seems like Mazda only stepped up after leakage of purpose full ignoring or at least trying to keep this low key.
What I wondering about is since "the problem" has sorta been identified--what is going to be done to correct the problem? And it is a problem--maybe people just drive to suit the engine and live in the right place.
Will they offer larger oil coolers? A better coolant system,(electric water pump!!!) better air flow through the engine bay or a combo of all? I believe something of that order is warrented. So what if you get a new engine when it could have the same problem as the one before.
Come on Mazda do it right.

by the way if you do a thread search i have been posting since early 2004 about this engine/engine bay getting too hot.

There is no question the Renesis runs hot.

Absolutely no question.

I remember trying to check my oil level three weeks ago.

I had to wait a couple of hours for the engine bay to cool off.

Try checking you oil immediately after coming off of a highway.
You will be supprised how cool the engine bay is if the airflow is maintained.
It is heat soak that is really the problem.
There are a few spots on the rotary motor that are unbelievable hot. Those radiate to the rest of the compartment if given a chance.
Really, it amazes me that the motor keeps together at all. There are two completely different metals with totally different heat expansion coefficients sandwitched together and subjected to flash heating in localized spots. How it doesn't just warp apart amazes me.

It can warp - that is why some leak.
However, it doesn't warp typically because of the assembly technique, which is amazing.
Aluminum and iron are so dissimilar...

Mine is having its motor replaced as we speak. It died this week and the dealer ordered the new motor. I was told it will take 7-10 days to arrive. it was stalling and making a clicking noise and idling rough. He told me the new motor should be stronger--I expected a fight but they were very easy to deal with. This sounds like it could be a big mess. I am in Vegas and it has had a rough time this summer.

RotaryNews.com has confirmed that there will be a recall on the 2004, 2005 and some 2006 Mazda RX-8s. Not every RX-8 will need a new engine, only those that fail a series of tests, including a new vacuum test. The replacement engines will correct for issues ranging from flooding, hard starting, complete loss of compression, and use of Synthetic Oil in hot climates. For those that do not require an engine replacement, the ECU will be reflashed to provide for more lubrication (an already released Flash). Recall notice letters will be sent out to owners on a staggered schedule. At this point some dealers do not know about the recall, as the bulletin has not been sent.

Jeremy Barnes from Mazda Public Relations stated: "We will not walk away from any Mazda owner." Jeremy also pointed out that other issues that have escaped on the Internet as of late were only part of the story. He hopes the recall action by Mazda will show owners that Mazda is doing the right thing after all.

We at RotaryNews say, if you own an RX-8, check over this list of TSB's (Click Here). If your car is experiencing any of the issues listed on that page, print out the ones that apply to you, and bring them down to the service department while they check your car for the other recalls. We, at RotaryNews also say: "if in doubt, do NOT use Synthetic Oil." For those of you that are "Rotary Gods" (!) and know what you are doing, it is OK, other wise stay away from synth, and use the good old Dyno Juice.

Trying to make sense of that. Might this all boil down to the 5w20 oil spec? I know OZ uses heavier. Was 5w20 spec'd for Candada?

Damn! I was using 5w30 too, until the BITOG site convinced me that 5w20 might actually be better.

So let me get this straight, and ANYONE, please feel free to respond:

1) The Renesis has a known design and/or manufacturing problem that causes compression failure;

2) Mazda is going to run some tests to see if motors are prone to this type of compression failure;

3) Mazda is going to replace such motors with new or remanufactured ones;

4) These new or remanufactured motors will somehow have a design and/or manufacturing change that will prevent such failures in the future (???);

5) Mazda is tacking on an additional one year/10,000 mile warranty on the powertrain as some sort of assurance to its "highly valued" customers.

Did I miss anything?

If not, do you blame me for being highly skeptical of number 4 above?

If you don't blame me, do you agree that number 5 is woefully inadequate?
