in response to questions from Automotive News correspondent Mark Rechtin who's article was the one that broke this story and started this thread, Mazda Execs had this to say:
"It involves damage to the catalyst resulting from oil leaks in the RX-8's rotary engine." and i cant remember which article now but one of them quoted someone at Mazda North America saying some thing rediculous about oil getting into the combustion chamber as if that wasnt normal operation.
so if part of the problem is leaking oil- there could be a physical change to correct that.
other side did you "beta test" the vacuum tester?

So in other words, in order to keep the Renesis from destroying itself, you CANNOT drive the RX-8 on most hot, crowded city streets and when you do drive it, you must drive way above the posted speed limit - eh?
Check out this scenario - "Uh Officer I HAD to drive 80 mph in the 30 mph zone over the sidewalks to avoid sitting in traffic, and I had to keep my windows wide open (sorry about the loud music) so that my engine doesn't puke' - lol

Hmm.. Otherside question about the Vacum Tester.. does every shop have one as a normal piece of equipment or did Mazda send you one for this upcoming mythical biblical recall? If so then this might possibly explain my dealers ignorance on this. Then again they have proven to me already they are not that smart ("Sure drivers side visor needs to be replaced" "Um Kevin we ordered you the wrong visor we ordered you a passenger side one sorry."). For this recall when it hits I'm taking mine to another dealer that has more credibility with Rotary's and just service (re:brains!) in general.

Hmmm. Just a thought...and to extend this thread: it's entirely possible a replacement remanufacured engine could perform slightly better than your present engine. Just by chance you could get an engine that had a near perfect fit and balance on on the moving parts.
Someone mentioned that a worn engine might have to have the chamber rebored and a larger seals installed. I understand this would be a very small increase in chamber volume but would this increase horsepower?

^ ~20 hp increase b/c of the new flash . . . I guess we can all dream, right?
So soon? There at least 10 rounds left. And by rounds I mean days.

So this new flash is going to lean out my engines A/F mixture, is this just at idle?
Of course we don't know yet. But if it does this all through the throttle range then what
is this going to do for me and my AT in 120 degree weather.
Detonation (ping) is not my friend. I have to deal with this already in the heat.

Mazdausa Website says no recall for my 8
When I registered by 05' rx8 today on the mazda usa site it says no recalls for my car. Is this to good to be true? Do I have a magic VIN number that exempts me from the recall. My Car was built 7/05 (doesn't say what day) so it is possible that I missed the date cut off of 7/7/05. Has anyone gotten a recall notice through the site??
Thx

Purveyor of fine bass
Someone should make a FAQ sticky.
Like:
Q) Is the recall official?
A) The recall is not yet officially out.
Q) When should I expect to be notified?
A) Letters will be sent out Aug 28th. It may take a week or two for you to receive the letter.
etc...
