why wouldn't u just spend 1000-1500 for an econo beater? Youre just screwing yourself over by trading your 8 in.

-coming from a car salesman btw

Too many people look at just what the fuel bill is, not realizing it will take them years in the replacement vehicle for the swap to break even.
You're complicating the decision making process with logic.

agreed. When I bought my car, I had pre-arranged financing at a great rate. The dealer stated they couldn't accept my pre-arranged financing and sold me theirs....at a higher APR. Their selling technique? "Your monthly bill will remain the same". Guess what? They added a WHOLE YEAR onto the plan. Another year = $5000 more. Unbelievable.

Don't trust a dealership. They're there to make money, that is all.

The new engine output is impressive....the Cobalt SS was a bit faster than the RX8 in a str8 line before, should be a lot faster now. Around a track? Not so much.

That EcoTec engine is impressive! The Cobalt SS may have a cheap interior and may be ugly, but for 26 mpg it is definitely one to put on the list.

jesus this is a lame comment.

I'll throw up for consideration a Mini Cooper S or Honda Integra Type-R as brilliant cars. If you have the b@lls to bag them, go for it. Your'e gonna look like a kn0b. RWD is not THE be all and end all of driving.

some clever people have given you some good advice mjones - take it .

Think about this for a second . How long will it be before you would have paid off the 8 and have no more payments to make . At that time how much longer will you need to make payments on a new car . Think of the money you will be saving THEN . Might pay for a few tanks of gas - yes ?

If it's all about the money it would make more sense to refinance the payment on the 8 to be less each month and longer payments, since that's how the dealer would screw you over on a new car anyway, only not decreasing the payment

Say with your trade-in, down payment, and everything else, you are only paying $10,000 for your new 29mpg 'gas sipper' (btw, 29mpg is not very fuel efficient) for your 60 month loan (including interest).

19mpg over 29mpg = 66% of original fuel use.

66% of $500 monthly fuel cost = $328 monthly fuel bill.

Monthly savings: $172.

Months to 'make-up' $10,000 loan from trading in: 58 months.

So, almost five years before you break even.

Paying off your current car with 19mpg > trading in for a new one for 29mpg.

While gas prices make filling-up painful, it would be stupid for me to trade in my RX-8 just because of the price of gas, especially since most vehicles only get another 10-15 mpg on the highway.

I'm thinking, as a result of gas prices, there should be some major developments in the next few years as far as car engine technology goes. I'm going to wait to see what becomes available from that (mmm... Tesla Roadster), because 29mpg isn't worth it.

The car isn't the issue, it's the price of switching to ANYTHING new. We've already had a long argument about the Civic Si.
