RX8 is going to have to go.. Si, or GTi..
500.00 a month gas bill is forcing me out of the 8, I love the 8 better than any car I've had. This little yellow car has just been awesome but, $500.00 a month for gas it is just is not worth it any more. For whatever reason, even after new coils, plugs wires and filters 18-19mpg is all it will do and I drive it very easy and mostly on the HWY.
It's come down between a 2008 Honda Si, or a 2008 VW GTi... There are things l like about both, the honda has more options and is 4K, less.
But, I was very impressed with the GTi.... going back to look at the honda again today. Both are rated at 22mpg-29mpg, I'm not one to drive hard much, but like to know there is a little kick if needed. The GTi was amazing felt like it had much more than 200hp..
I know I'm going to regret this big time. Some people don't like yellow, but I have grown to just love it. No, other car I have ever had gets as much attention as this one.

did you calculate how much you stand to lose on the trade of the rx-8, plus the additional cost of the new vehicle, verses what you'll save on gas? How long till the swap breaks even?
Too many people look at just what the fuel bill is, not realizing it will take them years in the replacement vehicle for the swap to break even.

according to the dealer, my payment will stay the same (in the honda anyway since they are only 24k,).. and my monthly gas bill should go down almost 1/2. I've really never been in this boat before when I traded cars and didn't really want to. Before I've only traded because there was something else I just had to have. Not so in this case, I do not like the Si, or Gti, anywhere close to the 8. and I don't really know of any other car I would. The only other thing is that it would be nice to get back into a car with a warranty. So, I don't have that worry as well. Thanks for the comments guys. In the back of my head I'm still not 100 % sold on getting rid of her.

How long do you have left in MONTHS of payments on the 8? With a new car, how many MONTHS will that be? The same? More? How many more? If those number of months isn't the same, guess what, you're paying for the privelege even with the same $$$ amount. Add that up.
Oh yea, check with your insurance agent. Will the payments be the same? More? Less? Ahhh, then check with the state/town office. Will the taxes and registration be the same? More? Less? Add that up.
Don't forget depreciation on the new car. Check Edmunds for the real cost each year including depreciation. You'll be surprised what the 1st thru 3rd yr $$$ numbers are. Add that up.
OK warranty is neat, but total all the above, you'll find a possibility of a few repairs/service a drop in the bucket compared to everything else.
Monthly payment talk is useless.

I guess most people feel they're going to make car payments forever so the actual cost of the car or any trade-in loss doesn't matter - it's only the monthly expense that counts. Car dealers love those customers.

He's as bad as Can
That's what I did two months ago, got a 2000 Saturn SL for $2,500. I drive it just to work 3-4 times a week and it gets 38 MPG. I used to put 2,000 miles a month on my 8, now less than half that. Look around for a 5-speed econo car thats about 6-10 years old.

yeah, i've had a montly payment long as I remember and probably always will so that doesn't bother me. Far as depreciation, don't think many cars could depreciate fast as the 8 did. Honda seems to hold their value as good as any and from what I see the GTi, is not bad either. But right now $500 a month for payment, 500+ a month for gas and 70.00 for insurance, is just too much. If I just save 250.00 a month on gas I'll be happy. Wish I had not just spent 600.00 on new tires for the 8... but, it needed them either way.

DUDE!!! How many miles do you drive in a month and why? Long commute?
$500per mth / $4.00per gallon = 125 gallons/mth
125 ga. per mth X 19 mpg = 2375 miles per mth
2375 mi per mth / 4 wks = 593.75 miles per week
2375 mi per mth X 12 mths = 28,500 miles per year
Holy crap that is a lot of miles in a year. I don't currently have an rx8 but am looking for one. I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler that is getting about 25 hwy and 18 city that I drive most of the time.

Once you get the final numbers on the sale, please PM me.
I have worked at dealerships my whole life, I will show you how many different ways they are screwing you, and how to fight back.
I completely understand wanting a new car, and wanting better MPG, But just make sure you are not $10,000 out of pocket to save $250 per month.

I'm soooo proud today. Every single point I was going to make has already been said... on the very first the page of the thread!!! My faith in humanity is renewed... well, for everybody except for mjones53.

If gas and car payments are such a problem, how about selling the 8 and buying an old beater? Then when you are financially ready you can get into an Si or a GTi. Besides neither of those cars are "outstanding" in terms of MPG....better than the 8 but not incredibly good.

@ 29MPg and 4.25 your only saving 44.77 a month.
You will loose at least 2 grand. That will take you 44.67 months to make up for that loss.
4 years to recovr your sale.

Well I'll be blunt and to the point. Although the SI and GTI will give you better gas mileage, the savings are not gonna be significant enough to make or break affordability. If there are other reasons for wanting to make this trade that you have not expressed, well then that's different, but I'll go off what you have expresed.
Getting one of those cars, the only major benefit you have is the fact that you will be getting a brand new car, as opposed to keeping your 4 year old RX8. This also means less maintanence costs, and likely better reliability long term, especially if you get the SI. Now the Civic SI is a GREAT car for future resale value, so true cost to own, in the long run you will save with that trade if you keep it 5+ years.
Even if payments stay the same on your new car, take the added amount of months to the loan you will be getting if you make the trade, and that is how much more you will be spending. That will counter-act any savings, and long term you will end up spending more.
My advice is get your hands on a cheap little beater car to commute to work in. That will save you money, and allow you to keep your RX8. For less then $2000 you can find a reliable commuter car that will get you 35-40mpg. Good luck in your decision, but ALWAYS stay smart and objective and know all the long term results if you make this trade.

I heard rolling over negative equity from previous vehicles and looking at only monthly payment is the way to go. It works for at least 3-6 vehicles before the $120,000 72 month loan for a Geo Metro catches up to you.

Weird. I did what no one ever expected: I got into the 8 to save money on gas.
Well. Not really. It's just a badass car that I've wanted since its inception.
However, I had a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited that was purchased for a specific purpose (we don't have he time for that story). When that purpose ceased to exist, I decided that at some point I'd be moving back to driving a car. The price at the pump sped that right along.
Well. I didn't know that I would be trading up to a badass car that I've wanted since its inception.
So I become one of the few that (so far) has seen a reduction in my gas bill by buying a car that supposedly gets poor gas mileage. I guess it is all in your perspective.
