Depending on where you live (and therefore how much good weather you get in a year), I agree that the right answer is to keep the 8 and buy a motorcycle.

This is because you never did a lap following a cooper S on your 8 probably
I'd go for a used car, monthly payments are just a waste of money since you end up paying too much more than the original price.

Go with a GTI, it's about as quick as the 8 (especially with Dual clutch transmission) and it's pretty fuel efficient. Plus it's German.
That math is painful to watch.

So over 4 years you will have saved maybe $5-6k in gas. Whereas depreciation on a new car alone would have cost you at least $5k in the first year. And this is before we even account for the bath you take when you trade in the current car.
What makes sense is if you trade into a cheap daily beater. Realistically you won't break the 30 mpg barrier if you want a car that actually rides like a car instead of some econo-tinbox, so your savings is not as much as you think it will be.

I own a 06 GTI and my lease is coming to a end on my 04 RX-8. I get about 31 to 32 mpg on the highway with the GTI. If you still owe on the RX-8 you probably will be upside down, I would just buy a beater and drive the RX-8 on weekends/fun. I love both cars, the RX-8 handles awesome, and the GTI with the mods I put down at the wheels 255hp and 303tq on the dyno(about $2500-$3000 in mods).

Just buy an used car. when I was looking for a car a wanted an RX-8. In the end got a Altima se-r std. The main reason was MPG. I got 27-30 in the SE-R and power.
I love my SE-R but everytime I see a RX-8 I say to myself I want an RX-8. Now I'm going to get an use car for my daily 130 miles to work. I'm getting good MPG in the SE-R but also a lot of miles. Is a 06 and have 54,000 miles. I don't want the car to deteriorate with the high millage. So I'm looking to buy an used car for daily driving.
In the end what I mean is this. It doesn't matter how much your MPG is right now. You won't like your car to deteriorate with the high millage. So get an use car and use the RX-8 in the weekends. I will do it and I'm getting 27-30MPG
