DUDE!!! How many miles do you drive in a month and why? Long commute?
$500per mth / $4.00per gallon = 125 gallons/mth
125 ga. per mth X 19 mpg = 2375 miles per mth
2375 mi per mth / 4 wks = 593.75 miles per week
2375 mi per mth X 12 mths = 28,500 miles per year
Holy crap that is a lot of miles in a year. I don't currently have an rx8 but am looking for one. I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler that is getting about 25 hwy and 18 city that I drive most of the time.

Side note on that crash test, just saw this:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=uykStESm3vw
Apparently it's not real, it's got a bunch of sand in the back and was tested at like 75 MPH.
Of course then you're just taking someone else's word for it....I don't know who to believe anymore.... <sobs>

120,000+ miles tick tock
500.00 a month gas bill is forcing me out of the 8, I love the 8 better than any car I've had. This little yellow car has just been awesome but, $500.00 a month for gas it is just is not worth it any more. For whatever reason, even after new coils, plugs wires and filters 18-19mpg is all it will do and I drive it very easy and mostly on the HWY.
It's come down between a 2008 Honda Si, or a 2008 VW GTi... There are things l like about both, the honda has more options and is 4K, less.
But, I was very impressed with the GTi.... going back to look at the honda again today. Both are rated at 22mpg-29mpg, I'm not one to drive hard much, but like to know there is a little kick if needed. The GTi was amazing felt like it had much more than 200hp..
I know I'm going to regret this big time. Some people don't like yellow, but I have grown to just love it. No, other car I have ever had gets as much attention as this one.

I drive 110 round trip. My gas is $525 a month now... listen to what these guys are telling you, getting into a newer gas sipping car will not save you money, and if it does, the savings will be minimal. Cut back on other expenses.... me I love having a Panera breakfast sandwhich with a large Ice tea every day. Thats 5 bucks everyday, $25 bucks a week, 100 bucks a month. I axed that out! Now I eat cereal every morning.... I use to buy $5 dollar protein shakes every day too, thats a 100 bucks a month, now I buy a $50 tub of protien powder and can make my own protien shakes for a month and a half. Those are examples where you can save....
Try it, I bet you blow extra money here and there on things that you don't even realize you spend on or need, that could be applied to your gas.
And think , if you trade in your RX-8 , you will be going from a unique car that is almost paid off to a average car that is ho-hum to drive around in and you'll get fustrated with it, even bored with it , which will cause you to trade up for something more fun to drive again, which is going to cost you $$$$. Then you will be back in a worse situation than you started out.
Keep your 8 and cut back, or keep your 8 and buy yourself a beater, there everywhere if you look.

Yep, I roundtrip is the same plus, a lot of driving on the weekends.
I do appreciate everyones input, at this point my heart is still with the 8 so, it's going to be very hard to get rid of her. The dealership had the ***** today to tell me the color was going to hurt the trade in value... I told that dealer to forget it.

That sounds like my commute to work alrite. I drive approx. 70 miles roundtrip every day mon-fri to work with my 8. Fill gas like twice a week ... around $50 each time I fill ... so it is close to $500 a month... That if I don't go anywhere else during weekend which it is a lie LOL .. I am always driving ... I always complain about gas prices .. but can't do anything about it.. I knew what I was gonna get into

Why did you take financial advice from a dealer? The same dealer that wants your money and told you you'd cut your gas bill in half on a car that only gets about 50% better mileage. Do you seriously think you can get 38 mpg in the Civic Si?
#64
Sell the 8 and get a Vette. 25 mpg hwy and still has lots of hp and torque. Lots of folks get 28 mpg hwy. I drive 50 miles a day to work . About 2/3rd is state hwy and the rest is city and I average 22mpg. When I play I get less than 18.

幹他媽!
what year, trim/ options does your 8 have?
NPR just had a story about suv owners rushing to trade-in/ sell their cars in order to down-size to save gas. and, this has created a flood of unwanted suvs on the market. but, one major point they made was that regardless how bad MPG your car gets, if u trade it in before the first couple years of accelerated depreciation are absorbed, you basically are making a terrible financial decision. the loss that the owners take on the sale/ trade-in far outweighs any gas savings- even if the car gets crappy MPG.
if interested, go on their web site and get the Podcast. it was a very interesting report.

Let's put up some objective, real-world comparatives to help you make decision.
According to www.fueleconomy.gov, the following prices represent the total fuel costs for each of the following 2007 cars that have been mainly referenced in this thread. These are based on current fuel prices, 55% highway/45% city and 15000miles per year.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rx8 $3353
Civic $1868 ($941 less than Rx8, or, 28% less than Rx8)
Gti $2412 ($1392 less than Rx8, or, 42% less than Rx8)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Yes, figures will vary on drivers and specific cars, but lets approximate with these as best guesses.)
Objectively, the % savings are undeniably significant. The question is, is the difference in price significant for you? Need to recalc figures if you are doing more than 15000miles per year. If so, savings will obviously widen.
Other factors to keep in mind:
- Fuel is going up at approximately a rate of 40c per gallon per year (de-trended data). This means for fixed miles driven and fixed fuel economy, the savings will be greater between more fuel efficient cars and the Rx8. Practically, you can factor in a additional 10% to 12% increase in savings.
- I'm not sure what year your Rx8 is, but it's possible it's lost a lot to depreciation already. If so, you should factor in price of a new years depreciation which will be significant. So there may well be an equivalence if you do your numbers as the savings may not be as great.
- To a major extent, power is proportional to fuel economy. If you do go to more fuel efficent car, how unhappy will you be at the loss in power in the new car?

Thanks, that does help a lot... strange the Si, and the GTi, are both rated at 29mpg but, the GTi, shows a lot wider %

You still haven't said how many payments you have left. I mean, when it's paid off, that money spent every month just isn't spent. I'm staring down 5$ a gallon gas next year (maybe worse) and have 2 cars, but one of them will be paid off next year, so no matter what fuel costs, I'll be at a net gain over what I'm paying now (just gas, instead of car + gas). If you can hang in there for a little longer, you'll be so glad you did.
"I'm used to having a car payment" is really a way of saying "money burns a fat *** hole in my pocket." I know all about that. Which is why I have 2 cars. If I can't overcome that character fault soon, I'm gonna have a different car for each day of the week before it's over with.
