I have been having a weird idle issue lately in the afternoon when I leave work around 5:30. The car sits all day until I fire it up to make my car ride home. I do not notice the problem when I start the car in the morning. Basically the engine weirdly starts to rev the engine from about 1K RPM to 2K RPM in a cyclical motion. If I put my foot on the clutch, it goes away. As soon as I move off the clutch, it contnues. This goes on for about 2 minutes, then settles into the normal 900-1100 RPM range. Has anyone heard of this before? Im a little worried...

That is what I thought, I mean you can't really see it anyways but I guess that is for people that are very meticulous about their cars. Its like $200 more dollars to have it polished. Thanks for the reply

Welcome to driving an 8 . Mine does the same, it is not something I would be too worried about. You could possibly check the engine mounts if the idle is pretty rough but from what I have gathered on here it is fairly normal. The rotary is a very moody creature. Hope this helps.

I know there are many oddities, I just have not experienced this one before. Does anyone else experience the same thing? At least now I know its fairly common so I wont worry too much.

It happened with my 8 too. It isn't a problem. It is set to rev higher and up and down to heat up the cats when it's cold and then returns to a normal idle when it has warmed up a bit. Kinda like you revving an old car while parked after a cold start to heat it up before you can drive it. Just the ECU on this fancy beast does it for you

You could also try using seafoam if the idling is bothering you. After I did it to mine everything in the car was a lot smoother even the gear **** barely vibrates as much

Thank guys. I assumed it was something of this nature but just wanted to make sure. You have set my mind at ease!

Another newbee question. Never having owned a manual transmission car with traction control, when I start out from a stop making a left turn and accelerate through the turn, I get a feeling like a "hop" in the rear end. Is that just the TC?

Neutral switch is having issues. If there is no CEL, then it is the cold affecting the neutral switch signal. The ecu doesn't idle hunt unless it doesn't know if it is or is not in neutral. Pushing in the clutch makes it go away because it knows its in 'neutral' then due to the clutch interlock switch and can shift to the right fuel map.

yea, that's the DSC at work. You can turn it off by pushing the switch on the left hand side of the dash, right by your steering wheel column.

turn if off and then accelerate through a turn, you can instantly tell the difference

Dont worry about the mileage being low. I used to think the same way until people explained some of the reasons why they have such low mileage. Yeah that is extremely low for a car from 5 years ago, but the thing is, a lot of people dont use the 8 as a daily driver. Maybe someone was keeping it in perfect condition and only using on summer days when he wanted to showoff his wife, and eventually decided he didnt like the payment to how often he uses it ratio.

Most appreciated. That is one of those switches that gets forgotten. I turned it off and that did the trick. Can.t see a great need to have it on in good weather and with the light on the dash, it reminds me it is off for the rainy days.

Agree get the carfax. That will give you an idea of how it has been used. How many owners, ext. My 2005 (originally sold in Feb 2006) only has 36,000 miles on it. Two owners other than me . Last and longest owner only drove it in the summer and mostly only 15 miles a day.

Another suggestion is to talk to your Mazda dealer. Other can usually tell you the maintenance history. With warranty on cars, and dealer work is normally sent to Mazda. So it should have some maintenance record.

If I start my car and lift the hood, I can hear a sound that is exactly like an electric leaf-blower. It goes away after a few minutes and is not extremely loud. Just wanted to know if it's normal.

That's the air pump. Injects fresh air into the exhaust when it sees the cat below it's target temp to accelerate how fast it heats up, reducing emissions. Typically only runs for a short period of time after starting.

Yes, if you have the Bose system it can fry things out due to the way it is set up. The Bose is a major pain if you are looking to replace things. If you want to read up on it you should start here:

Is that lip and crack-like looking imperfection surrounding it on all 8s? Or did I have a ungodly object hit it.

What is this sheet that seems to be drooping on the passengers side here? I see it bolted on on the right side of the picture but I can see insulation inside from where it is sagging. Problem?

First is normal, was just under my 8 and saw it

Second is insulation between heat shield and body.

Hmmm. I wonder why it is falling down a bit. I wonder if that is part of the cause of my vibration issues. I'll see if I can secure it somehow. Any suggestions?

A bit confused/bummed. My 2005 tourer has the Bose package ( says it on the window sticker and on the window edge speaker), but it does not appear to have the 6 cd changer. Wasn't that included with the Bose audio package?

Also, can the dealer add the satellite radio? I see a button for it .

either turn it all off(by holding the switch for.... i think around 8 seconds or so) or keep it on. The car does some weird crap when STM is off and TC is on. (or is it the otherway around TC off and STM on).
ive heard that Rx8 race teams also recommend this. All on or all off. clicking the button makes the car crash you.

either way, when driving on the street just keep it on.

You can have the Bose setup without a changer. I have it with no changer and a cassette player. Yes, you should be able to get satellite. Ask the dealer but it will be expensive.

+1, satellite radio is dumb and old tech.

Buy a GROM or any other type that lets you put in a aux jack into your stereo and run it straight to your phone. Play pandora on your phone and pick exactly what you want to hear. total cost is about 70 for the grom.
