If you can't do that, then take it to Mazda. Tell them to do a compression test and check the cat. If you are under 80k and are still under 8yr, then you are covered for cat. If you fail compression, you get a new engine.
If none of the above, you pay out of pocket.

im actually at 79k miles. I guess I should probably get my cat checked then! And no I never tried checking my cat. Ill have to see if they can check it for me.

Since TPMS uses a universal standard since late 90's they all should be compatible with the computer.
You're kinda sorta right but mostly wrong (don't meant to offend). There are 2 types of tpms. Radio sensors and ABS sensors. Mazda uses radio sensors. However they are not the band clamp type you described as "strip". That particular style is used mostly by FOMOCO. Mazda uses bolt in style valves that have the radio attached.

As of the late 90's very few manufacturers in fact had yet to jump on the TPMS bandwagon. Only a select few high end cars had it. And typically only where run-flat tires applied.

As the years went by, more and more auto makers started offering it with their cars. However, as of mid 2007 the federal government mandated that all new cars be equipped with some sort of TPMS system. It is now treated as a safety devise much like seatbelts and airbags.

That being said, all auto manufacturers have a different way of going about it. and every sensor is different. The sensors are "married" to the car so to speak. They are not interchangeable. You are sometimes able to take sensors from one car to another provided it is the same make. ie: mazda to mazda; ford to ford, However you will most likely have to "relearn" the new sensors to the new car.

So, back to the original question. You can remove your sensors easily by just unscrewing the nut on the valve and pulling the sensor out the bottom (tire dismounted) and reinstall them into your new wheels. The car wont know the difference as long as your original sensors are there.

I have a small oil leak closer to the passenger side. It's not much but the bottom of the radiator is where the oil is collecting. Am I right in thinking its from the omp? I will take a look at it today when I get home. I sure hope oil has been getting inside the housing. I'm kind of worried all the oil that's supposed to go to the engine has been leaking out.

And when folded in, they are flush with the fenders, visually that is, I haven't taken measurements but its good for parallel parking.

Question:

Can lack of compression be a reason why I get a slight gas smell at startup?

When I start my car (I use 93 octane, always use premix each fillup [i eyeball the amount, not too too much though], and use 10w30 rotary oil), I get quite the gas smell for a while. I open my garage door and startup to let it warm up. I get lots of gas fumes smell, as well as a moderate amount of whiteish smoke out of the exhaust for a few minutes. Is this normal? If I have the doors closed, I dont really smell the gas fumes so its not like its coming into the cabin, but with the door open I can definitely smell it. Maybe thats normal?

I ask if compression is related because I have a compression test on monday with mazda, but if this is a seperate issue I am not going to bring this problem to mazda. Ill have to bring it to ford because thats where my warranty is since I just bought the car.

^ It could also possible be ignition related items (coils, plugs, etc) if they're not doing a full combusion leading to a richer gas smell out the exhaust

Ill double check the my wires. I got new NGK wires and they are pretty difficult to put on the coils/plugs. When trying to push them on the plugs I felt like I was going to break them until I heard the little "pop" that let me know they were in all the way. And the side for the coils was so tight when I tried to take a wire off to reposition a coil, it broke the top of the coil right off of it lol. I will double-check and make sure the connections are great. Its kind of funny though this car for me. I feel like it goes from 1 side to the opposite side. For example, the idle runs so smooth at startup until its warm, but has the gas smell until its warm. Once its warm, the gas smell goes away, but the idle is bumpy. Trade-offs.

Thanks for the advice, ill check em out

next dumb question: If it is not recommended/safe to use synthetic oil in the rotary engine, why does Idemitsu make a synthetic oil that is "specifically" for the rotary engine? I've read through lots of a oil posts on this forum, and I had been wondering that. I use idemitsu rotary oil, but I see in big bold letters on the bottle "Full synthetic", whereas I hear people advise against this.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CAN WE HAVE A NEWB SECTION - I HAVE LOTS I WANT TO POST AND COMING BACK HERE AND TRYING TO FIND CONVERSATIONS IS A PAIN

OK I cannot find a good plugs and coil DIY.

The coils I have seen look like this

http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/j...2/DSCN0720.jpg

from https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-mazda-ignition-coils-pics-178515/

mine however live in a much messier tighter world of attached images (which I cannot yet place properly in post).

I can find coil, I can find plug but I cannot find combined DIY replacement and, as I said my insides do not look like that pic!!

I have not done serious work on a car in 30 years so a little nervous!

About to tackle the air filter but that is a nightmare to get off.

TIA

Steve

Are you searching the DIY threads?
There are plenty of threads discussing plugs and coils.

I think that your limitation is searching properly. Use the "google" search feature (linked in my sig below) and instead of oil, use key words in your tag (ie DIY coils, DIY plugs, etc)

Yep Rx8Soldier I searched but found plugs OR coils.... now happier that most people have the same type of black box on the side of the air intake (no one seems to know what it is - 3rd pic above). Anyhow happier to do plugs and coils by copious reading of various threads but still could not find a good combined one.

BTW finally got the air filter changed. What a pain to remove!

Once again thanks for your help.

check your master and slave cylinders ... you may not be getting full clutch disengagement ... you wanna fix this soon as grinding = damage

Why don't you make one then?

The black box on the side of the according tube is for noise cancellation.
The rotary engine creates a very loud intake sound.

Basically an acoustic silencer of sorts.

Would you put aftermarket springs on stock shocks with 94, 000 km on them ?? And then get aftermarket shocks a few months after ??

Rather than asking "would you ?" why not ask yourself ... why would I ?

I would just wait till I get the aftermarket shocks and install em all at once. Cheaper if you're paying someone, easier if you're doing it yourself.

Question: For small body scratches (half inch ones, or ones a couple feet but very very thing), would you use a toothpick to apply the touchup paint? I heard that some people need to sand the affected area first, but when I mentioned that to some of my friends who have had a little bit of experience with this, they reacted horrified like it was a big problem, and recommended using the tiniest impliment you could find to apply the paint.

Get a tiny craft brush rather than a toothpick . But yeah , as soon as you touch it with sand paper you will create a mess .
