Looks like I'll be doing a return..

I can't seem to find wix here in Australia.
Genuine will likely cost 100-130 aud
I have found some generic brand paper filters for ~$50

What about blitz or HKS filters. The blitz says that it can be cleaned out also

I'd stay away from reusable filters.
Your go-to parts store replacement paper filters should be fine as long as you change them on schedule.
The ones I buy are about $25 USD.

As long as they fit, yes.
My opinion anyway.

Don't cheap out on your filter. Cheap options will fit, but they'll work poorly. Bite the bullet and go OE.

I called the dealership. $114 aud for a genuine part. If i order from USA/UK it will roughly come to the same cost due to shipping

The K&N I bought came to $95
Ryco ~$75

Expensive here in australia.

Is there such thing a mazdaspeed panel filter?

What is your qualification for 'OE'?
I haven't heard a lot of negatives on aftermarket filters, if filtering dirt is the main purpose.
Buying air filters from the dealer is overkill, imo.
If you have facts to back up the unsuitability of aftermarket filters, please share.

Yeah, those prices are insane. :/

Think about it this way. The K&N is barely cheaper than OE, so the only way to really save money is to go for the Ryco or something like it. $39 isn't nothing, but average it out over the time you'll run it. Is that cost worth potentially worse filtration?

It's your money. I can only tell you what I'd do in your shoes.

OE = Original Equipment = actual Mazda part, with Mazda labeling and warranty

Pretty well documented that dirt ingress is one of the most common factors that accelerate wear in machinery, including engines. Cheap filters almost always provide worse filtration; the ones that compete with OE for filtration usually are more restrictive and/or lose performance faster. You CAN get filters that work comparably or better overall vs. OE, but those are almost always comparable or higher in price. There are always exceptions, but you are rolling the dice. OE is always a safe bet.

If your engine is on its last legs, then by all means feel free to cheap out on whatever. If not, don't risk worse filtration and/or performance just to save a few bucks.

Idk if it's available there, but Amazon Prime offers free shipping, but I imagine the logistics make that unlikely.

I wouldn't freak out over another brand paper air filter especially at costs over $100.

You should get on net and google part numbers like oem or others.

It's amazing how crossover numbers can be found.

I was looking for those black plastic fasteners that break easy.

I keep getting crap deals until I googled the actual part number.

I ended up with a box of 12 for $15 which were labeled for Mazda Tribute.

Still same part.

Yeah we don't have that here. the only thing we have amazon.com.au for is books and software downloads at the moment. All physical purchases are done via international sites like uk/us/jp

I have tried the air filter part number, its looks like its definitely unique to RX-8

Go to Americas Amazon.

It lists countries it ships to, and Australia is definitely one.

I saw the oem on there for $27.60 from Avondale Mazda, and shipping rates are $30.50 max for Asia.

Personally I'd just go get a paper filter that looks ok.

Three things

#1
Does the RX-8 have a drain tube in the trunk that stems from the Sunroof to get rid of any potential rain water?

I may have a water leak into my trunk.

#2
Also does anyone know how expensive it would be to replace the headlight covers? I mean I know the headlights in the front come as one piece but can one replace the material that gets baked? Its so horrible, one has to constantly clean them.

#3
Can a not 100% MAF sensor cause the car to shake at a stop light or when idling? I know a big thing for the MAF is regulating air intake. I haven't cleaned my throttle body in long time.Thoughts?

Thanks.

Regarding #3 - Yes. But it could also be a slew of other things. Motor mounts, throttle body, coils, plugs, wires, compression, amongst other things. I've still yet to solve my shudder while the A/C is on.

I thought I'd need $800 headlights, but I hired a guy off Craigslist in my town to rejuvenate them for $50 total.

They look new now.

Is having the fuel injectors cleaned worth it on a Rx-8?

I'm a new RX8 owner and I'm noticing that the engine compartment get very hot.

I am not a car novice, but I'll have to say I've never felt so much heat under the hood.

What say you?

Hey Luckydog:
the RX8 has quite the little fire breather for a motor so this could be absolutely normal. During summer months it seems even worse but as long as your cooling system is functioning properly it should not be an issue.

side note: it is also very common for the radiator fans to continue going even after you've turned the car off so if that happens, it means the system is indeed functioning correctly.

Happy rotoring.

Mine will still burn you after sitting for 4 hours. It gets hot as hell under there.

If your coolant temps aren't shooting up, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'd keep an eye on them though, you probably need an ODB/CAN adapter.

I have been checking all fluid levels pretty regularly.

My low engine coolant light came on though, yesterday, I put a little antifreeze and water in the reservoir and it's good. The temp never rose.

That is encouraging that other engines get hot as well.

Thanks
