If you look in the car...the thermostat housing is right beside the alternator

I had a P0335 (eccentric shaft position sensor malfunction) code pop up on the drive home from my recent compression test (never came up as pending - went straight to CEL on). I have never seen this code before on my car, and I scanned the ECU for any pending codes immediately before getting out and giving the keys to the service technician. I can't think of anything that they would be doing during a compression test that could cause the ESS to get a "malfunctioning" reading.
Any steps during a compression test that I'm forgetting that could cause this?


I gave the ESS a preliminary cleaning (without removing the intake, just reaching down there and grabbing around with a cloth), and didn't find any metal bits on it, but plan on removing the intake system to do a proper cleaning before clearing the CEL and starting the car. I'm planning to first clear the code via OBDII (without resetting the NVRAM), and see it it comes back. If it does then I'll reset the NVHRAM and try again. NVRAM all at once?

Rortaries ARE more vulnerable to small stuff that K&N lets in.

Drive for 50-80 miles. I don't understand the cooling fan bit..... Did they replace it? Sounds like it was siezed and/or was creating EMI? That is a weird one that is making me go WTF?
The fan was replaced and it is running excellent now. I am not sure why the fan was causing the engine to still turn off but after replacing it the ride is great except still no power steering. Going to replace that computer.

I found it . THanks so much. Very happy I found it. I was looking for a while. Now and the thermostat. In my car compared to the image I posted the sensor is facing a different way. I pray that the hot start issues are related to the coolant temp sensor. I know alot people on here think not so but my mechanic with years of experience thinks so. Either way...its alot cheaper than having Mazda see it again. They did compression tests, replaced plugs,coils and wires not too long ago. My research indicates it could be the engine is failing after all these years, even though there is not that much millage. Could also be the fuel injectors. I wish my mechanic would check those out but that is a stretch to ask and they "feel" positive its not that. That is the next thing for me to locate. I mistook the coils earlier for them but if you know where they are please let me know. Cheers.

One more thing I got a dumb idea. Maybe it might be worth mentioning. But have any of you seen these UV welding devices that look like a glue gun? I am wondering if they might help the cracking dashboard issue on Mazda RX-8s. Until I locate new one at a junk yard. What do you bros think?

Or what about putting on some UV glue and letting the sun dry out the cracks?

They unplug the ESS so the engine won't fire while performing the compression test. S.O.P.

Thank you. I totally forgot about that step. Interestingly, I have not experienced this in the past after a compression test. Cleaned and reset the ESS and it's good to go (i.e. no codes, engine is blown though lol).

Why can't you just do a Google search to find where the fuel injectors are? Come on man. It's not that hard.

Excuse me but I cannot tell you how many times I have done that already not to mention look under the hood, the forum and my manual. At times I admit with other things I am lazy but I try my best when it comes to learning about my car.

The car is an automatic, roughly 20,000 miles with new plugs, coils and wires. This isn't my car, not even my video. Got it off youtube. I'm just trying to help a friend here and learn a thing or two in the process. His car makes the EXACT SAME noise. I think this is known here as the "birds chirping" or "bird squishing" sound. What could this be guys? People have posted about this before, but no one found out why it makes that noise. This place has answers to everything. Why not this?

No one on this forum actually owns an automatic (or will admit to it--except for that one guy who tried to turbo one), so no one has any answers for you.

People have offered ideas, but unless someone is listening to it live, trying to diagnose a problem by listening through the internet is wishful thinking.

Sorry if this is way off, the YouTube video is blocked here at work so I am going by the chirping description. If it is the belt or pulleys try using a bar of soap, and while running, hold it against both the ribbed side and flat side of the belt. Keep your fingers out of the moving stuff. If it goes away you know it's the belt. On rare occasion it can be the surface finish of the pulley too.

Speaking of ignition coils - ones manufacured in China - how do we know that technically they don't perform up to Mazda's specs &/or don't have the longevity of the Spec C coils? I wouldn't put these on my car, btw, just wanting to get my money back for what I thought was "OE quality"; and when I see "made in China" stamped on the part I know they're junk, but how would one prove they're inferior to OEM?

Hey guys I seem to recall reading a post in a forum somewhere on here a while back relating to the Cadillac converter. They said our converters had some kind of rare metal in them and should b valued at around $100 or so when junked at scrap yards ... Has anyone else read this and redirect me back to it or can confirm this info for me. I can't remember what forum I was in because it was so long ago. I can't seem to find it again ether.

That might be - however scrap metals including rare earth (tantalum), precious (platinum catalysts), and other are at 5 year market lows. Yards are barely getting a profit after picking up junk/tow cars.

Kallen,

Many people make a living off of scrapping Catalytic converters. However, they also separate the precious metals by various methods. I've seen a set up while i was still in el paso that used water and PVC tubing to help separate them by weight (each metal weighs differently). It was quite complex yet impressive.

Normally after separation you melt them down to a solid and hopefully more pure form then sell it as that.

Thinking about pulling a trigger on an 07 RX8. The owner doesnt have a compression test but the mileage is low (
