Sorry if this isn't the correct thread, new here but trying. I recently bought a 2005 RX-8 with over 99K on it. Wasn't aware of the engine problems or warranty until I discovered this site. Car seemed to be running fine but I was curious after my reading here, I didn't have a reference point to start from since I never had an 8 before.. Initially took in for a compression check and they said everything was good. After more research here, I found their numbers were not "good", between 6.1-6.3 on both rotors, I printed out and took in the pages from the service manual that showed the acceptable range and asked to speak to the mechanic. He told me that you have to adjust for altitude and he had never seen optimal numbers in this area, SLC. I requested to see the factory chart showing the altitude adjustment and he was unable to produce it. He then told me that unless you bring the car in for "a loss of power" it isn't covered, "do you have a loss of power?", so of course I said yes, I must. He then informed that he would have to do a decarb and another compression check after that but I had to authorize it, which I did. happy to say, they called me the next day to inform me I was getting a new engine. The numbers were down to 5.6-5.9 after the decarb. Have the new engine and the car runs great, much quicker and winds up the RPM's a lot faster.
The mechanic was a nice guy and very knowledgeable and helpful in guiding me to the desired outcome. I'm thrilled that my car is like brand new now but irritated that it almost wasn't. I don't blame the mechanic, he was great and went so far as to tell me that if I wanted to bring in my own plugs and coils he would install them during the engine swap rather than paying dealer price. What irritates me is that if I were the average consumer I would have got screwed. It is only because of the knowledge and references I gained from this site that things worked out.To all RX-8 owners I say go to your dealer loaded with references, they assume you are stupid. While being polite, ask them to show or prove everything to you. Was funny how the guy started stuttering when I laid pages from their own service manual in front of him. Love my car and look forward to many miles of fun.

I thought I was burnt on the drivetrain. I was at 68K and had some engine codes for ECU car config, and a stuck SSV, ended up sending it to the dealership and they replaced the whole engine. I paid nothing.

My 2004 was having a problem starting when warm. It was just like the cold start issue where it floods if you move it when cold and turn it off. Now it was doing that when warm. I would stop for coffee on the way to work and come out to a car that was dead. It would seem flooded. Come back to it a few hours later and it would start with no problem. Took it to the dealer and they called the next day to tell me that they were replacing the motor (under warranty). I will pick it up by the end of the week. I hope it gets better milage. The funny thing is that I'm trying to sell it just because I'm tired of and want something new. 8 years is long enough, I think

^ At least the resale value just shot up with a new motor. 
A 2004 on it's original motor is worth around $6k to $8k. A 2004 on a brand new motor is worth more like $10k to $12k, possibly a bit more depending on the condition of the rest of the car.

Took my 8 into Walzer Mazda in Burnsville today, I'm getting a new motor because I have low compression and I'm still under my extended 8 year 100,000 mile warrenty on the engine core. Pretty excited to have a brand new motor and not have problems with hot starts or decreased power!

( Warranty)CHECK YOUR DATE OF MANUFACTURE!
The 100,000 warranty is SSP77. Mazda North America verified this to me along with data on the model years covered. You need to submit to MNA your VIN# and they will check date of manufacture for your 8. Even if you have a 2004 you may be out of warranty if date of manufacture is prior to today's date (more than 8 years etc.). Also GET A REFERENCE NUMBER when talking to MNA. They will give you one to FORWARD TO THE DEALER. Until I did this my local dealer was not very cooperative. I am thinking the reference to MNA gets their attention. My RX8 is in the dealer shop now for evaluation of the warranty protection, and I will update the forum on the results. The engine is blown, no compression, metal in the oil pan, etc. More to come......

Fix the radiator and then take it to the dealer. You never know. The warranty is SSP77. If the radiator failed prior to the engine blowing why should you have to pay for a new engine? THe radiator should not have failed in an '05. I would say nothing about the radiator (after addressing the evidence) and have it towed in for warranty evaluation.

Don't trust the dealer....
Do not deal with the dealer until you have a reference from MNA. Only then will an uncooperative dealer sit up straight.....

Had my 05 rx8 towed to Groove Mazda due to no start condition. They did the de-carb and replaced the coils, but couldn't get her started due to low compression (after requesting the test thanks to this forum) and they replaced the engine no questions asked! Got it back today, less than a week later, and it's running PURRRRfect!!! So glad to have my baby back running better than ever. I'm the 3rd owner and it only had 26k miles. Great service, very knowledgeable techs, highly recommend them to anyone in the Denver area. I'm so glad Mazda honored this extended warranty without any hassle

Just purchased a used 2004 with a rebuilt engine (with less than 100k miles on it) does anyone know if it is eligible for a warranty if I attempt to purchase a new one? Or is the warranty only offered once per vehicle?

The dealership told me that the original extended warranty (96months/100k miles) was still in effect since it has not technically expired AND that the engine they just put in was under a 12month/xxxx mile warranty from them, the dealership. Sooo, if you know for certain the engine was replaced, then take it back to the place that did it and ask if it's still under their warranty... or call Mazda North America Operation customer service 1-800-222-5500 and ask them what warranties might still apply to your car. Have the VIN on hand when you call too.

1) The original factory 8yr 100k engine core warranty. This timer starts at the date of first purchase, and could be 1 year before or after the actual model year (examples, RX-8s were available for purchase in 2003, and you could have ones like mine that originally sat on the lot into the following calendar year). If you didn't get the original sell date from the carfax, call MNAO with the VIN to get the expiration date of this warranty. You could be within it, or outside of it.
2) OVERLAPPING that warranty is Mazda's standard "workmanship" warranty of 1yr 12,000 miles on parts that they supply and install on your car. (doesn't apply if you supply the parts of if you do the labor, they have to do both). This is largely a moot point unless the engine was replaced after 7yrs and/or 88,000 miles, in which case the 1yr/12k warranty will push you past the 8yr 100k coverage point. Like my engine was replaced in March at 95,935 miles, and well within the 8yr, but I've got coverage on that engine till 107,935.
3) You could purchase an extended warranty from Mazda, or any other 3rd party warranty service, that could extend the warranty significantly farther. Some warranties are till a chassis mileage point, some are just starting from when you purchase it, so make sure you pay attention to what warranty you purchase, if you do purchase one. You do not have to purchase at the time of sale, and can wait till your factory warranty expires to make a warranty purchase. The cost climbs the older the car gets, and the more coverage of the 3rd party warranty is outside the factory warranty. Purchasing a 3rd party warranty can often be a smart move, but you really need to do your homework and do the financial analysis of everything to make sure you aren't actually just wasting money.

I called and they told me my car is still under warranty until June 26 2012 
for the engine core and the clutch pedal replacement sooooo.....
I also scheduled an appointment to have a compression test on Monday at 8am and the lady wouldn't let me schedule one if there wasn't anything wrong with the car???? She said it was not recommended...? So I told her I felt loss of power which I wouldn't know because I just have 4 months with the car. Hopefully it has low compression so they can change the engine
...
Also my clutch pedal squeaks and I'm sure that would be changed at least.

So is there anything else my car has to have other than low compression to sling a new engine? I just changed the starter and the spark plugs and I'm thinking of putting the old plugs to try and see if that will lower the compression I just want a new motor on my 04 with 73,000
Also if it happens to have a low compression will they tell me I just need to change the plugs and coils and so on instead of them telling me we're changing the engine????? I just want to be prepared to say something back when they call me with the results on Monday or Tuesday...
