The dealer is feeding you information backwards.
The typical procedure is that they perform the compression test, try a decarb, perform it again (among other stuff). If it passes the 2nd time THEN they charge you for the decarb (or bill it to warranty if you have the drivetrain warranty active) and hand you your car back. If it still fails, then they order a new engine and bill it to warranty.

Don't ignore the possibility of the cat being failed either, though they should pick up on the code and failure if it returns during the post-engine-install shakedown drives. Low compression shouldn't trigger the low cat efficiency code, which suggests you had both problems, not just 1.
Good on not letting them wallet rape you on the ignition

Got my spark plugs and coils changed twice in 5 years, this car eats parts like a dinosaur. Anyway just got my car back after 3 weeks at the shop, replaced the engine (more like rebuilt since they don't make those engines anymore). Runs like a charm now. Mazda wouldn't cover it because I just passed 8 years, but the extended warranty did so all I had to pay was $75 deductible plus spark plugs ($150).
the engine itself is $4000 + $2000 for labor.

Tell me how an engine with 3 moving parts and like 73 pieces costs $4k too!!

Need your guidance again...got the engine replaced on my 2004 RX8, and it is awesome. A week later, the engine light comes on and stays on. Oil is fine. Gas cap is on tight. Any ideas before I call them and go through the run around with them. This has been an adventure.

I hear a lot of people with the 04 RX8 saying they are getting a replacement motor for their car, however I was told when I called that my 04 was out of warranty already? Please explain how some are saying their 04 is under warranty till 2013 because I am getting ready to drop my RX8 off at a shop to be rebuilt and if in fact the warranty is still in effect I will drop it off with Mazda.

The warranty is 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. When was your car first sold? If it was before November 14, 2004 then it is over 8 years. People could have bought their 2004 in December of 2004 or even early 2005 and which case their car isn't 8 years old yet. It's not complicated.

The 8y /100k is nice but at 8 1/2 yr and 70k mine was just pronounced with compression issues and unable to pass smog without an engine replacement. Certainly my last rotary....

New Engine! :D
So I've been lurking on this site for some time just reading up on everything trying to learn as much as possible about the rx8 and figure out if it was the car for me. However, everytime I found something bad about it I blocked it out because I had test driven it and couldn't get over how amazing it looks, sounds, feels, etc. So, I bought an '05 wwp MT w/70K last month! :D However, I noticed the hard start problem happening to it I read up on the problem, found this forum, took it to the dealer two days ago, just got a call, the low compression was the problem, Mazda is shipping the engine and it will be installed at no cost to me whatsoever!!!! I am just so pumped I can't even explain it! I love Mazda! And I LOVE my 8!

@ RX8 Caleb,
Wow you are one of the lucky ones, as I had a similar issue with my 04 last year and Mazda refused to pay for a new motor. So I am having it rebuilt and ported. Again be careful with that remain as I've heard of a lot of them blowing (Mazda spec issues still -check the forms on this issues) and two you will no longer have a matching numbers car killing the value.
Do keep us updated on the new motor and how it goes. Make sure they install a new starter, battery, coils and plugs. Also I will have the Cat looked at as that is why my RX8 died. BHR Coils will ensure you don't have coil issues with the new motor. I am so glad Mazda came through, even with my Bad experience from Fitz Mazda in Annapolis MD, I still love Mazda and the Corp Mazda USA will work through almost any problem with you over these rotary's ( as they are for me now).

I know I am! Sorry to hear about it not working out so well in your case... I don't plan on ever selling it so I don't think its actual value is to big a problem, its worth a lot more to me with the new engine! I will post on how the new motor does and am reading up on everything about it. The dealership is looking at everything else under the hood to make sure its in good shape, if they say the starter, battery, coils, and plugs look good should I still replace them just to be cautious? I don't have a lot of money so if it would be basically pointless then I don't want to throw it at nothing, but if it is needed for the new engine then I am definitely willing to pay for it. Also the CAT was the first thing I had checked out and its in good shape

^..................might want to read up on NOT reusing the fuel lines, or at least make sure they know how the connectors work and are seated properly. Been cases of engine bay fires as they reused those and didn't connect them properly. Just be advised.

Which ever comes first.
And the "Year" part of it doesn't go off of your model year. It starts on the first date of date or in-service. Example, my 2005 wasn't sold until September 2006, so my 8 years isn't up until September 2014. Although I am past the 100,000 mile mark, so I'm out of warranty anyway.
Get that date and go from there.
(Same warranty cover rules as every car manufacturer out there)
