Another victim of the compression test @ MAZDA Turnersville NJ dealership for $240.00
But it paid of since my Rotor 1 tested 7.1 instead of 7.9 therefore they are in the process of replacing my motor at no cost to me ... "I guess I got to see the bright side"

Update: They still have had my car ever since 12/22/2011 due to some manufactures issue and I guess on top of it the holidays. No biggie for me since I still have a 2012 loaner at no cost too!

I miss my baby

My 05 with 87k miles died this morning on the way to work. 70mph going down the interstate then a complete loss of power, pulled off road and was unable to restart the car.

After A long wait for a tow truck I finally got it down to the dealer still unable to start to start the car.

Just spoke to the service tech, they said it failed compression test scoring in the low 5's on all faces and to get all my oil change records in order.

I hope this goes smooth.

Dropped off records to the service shop and the tech was on the phone with mazda taking about the replacement motor, 5 seconds later hung up and said my motor will be in next week.

They are going to inspect the clutch and oil injectors on tear down. I dont have a problem putting in a new clutch at 87k miles but i hope I dont have to replace any oil injectors.

To bad I still need to trade it in on something that can fit a car seat in the back and does better on gas but i might get another year out of it before trading it.

My 8 year 100K warranty was running out in 4 days, so I went and got a compression test. I have 95K miles. My compression came out in very healthy range. He was saying 8.5 is a great number and i got in the high 7 and low 8s. Hopefully my engine can last another 95K miles (knock on wood).

ok so i had a couple questions...... I just bought my 04 rx8 over the summer. It had the engine replace roughly 8k ago. So lets so hypothetcally speaking she blows again beofre the end of the year...... I dont have any oil change reciepts due to just buying it and the last changes Ive done myself..... But i do know where the previous owner took the car for oil changes. So am I screwed in the engine failure dept????? Thanks guys.

About 5 months ago I sold my 04 RX8 to a friend. I haven't seen the car in a while but it apparently the engine gave out on him. The car has roughly 85k on it and he took it to a local dealer and they said it is out of warranty. Does anyone know how I can help him? I feel bad that this happened to him but there's no way I can give him $6k to have the dealer put a reman engine in.

The warranty starts the day it was first sold so 8 years or 100K miles from then. Which ever comes first.

Is it possible that both rotors would loose seals at the same time?

Not sure if mine is flooded, tried deflooding and its still not starting. Coils/Wires/Plugs have less then 6000 miles.

Drove it to work last Thursday and it ran strong. Good torque (at least for an RX8) and ran silky smooth. Moved it 50 feet on Sunday which probably flooded it.

But it seems to crank really fast like its got no compression, and thats been since moving it onb Sunday.

Apparently it is 4 months past the warranty. Whatever. I found out after talking to the tech that it blew from excessive cranking with severe flooding and it had massive carbon deposits. It was perfectly fine when I sold it. I still feel bad that it blew on him but oh well. I'm gonna stick to worrying about my FC and FD and not worry about his car.

I was wondering if anybody has experience with ridiculously high oil consumption? It's a really long story, but the car I have burns about a quart every 60 to 70 miles. I'm taking it in on Friday to be looked at. I know they have to do a compression check to get things started usually. Haven't seen much on oil though.

Just a reminder, get your last service in before the time runs out. I took mine in 10 days after my warranty expired, to find out my engine is gone. And dont think "It's just a few days" will work. You will not win the argument. I've spent 4 months trying.

Last Update: after almost a month an half of waiting I finally got my car back!
Since they took so long (which I didn't mind since I had a 2012 loaner and put 1K miles as well) ... Anyways, I was able to get everything else that was not not under the new CORE MOTOR: Water pump, belts, Spark Plugs, Plug Wires, Ignition Coils etc. Right after taking it out of the dealership I could feel the difference of POWER. I am going to wait for the break in period to really hit hard. Also since they took so long they only charge me for the Compression test only nothing else!

I guess I lucked out and hope to all my RX8 buddies be as lucky as I was as well!

P.S. I never got asked for any service records and the Shop Foreman didn't mind me getting the OEM parts myself which I paid dirt cheap and Mazda Rosenthal's website !

I am keeping my RX8 'till it dies ... lol ... hopefully it will be 100k later ... lol !

^ so wierd.

I'm glad it worked out for you, but legally the diagnosis charges that diagnose a warranty covered repair are covered under that same warranty. The rest of the items that they didn't charge you for they could have legally.

They got it backwards.

Oh well, gratz

Wrong thread for that question (maybe a moderator will move it to troubleshooting where you'll get more views and advice), but yes, 2005 ATs are 4 speed.

Your radiator blowing, causing your engine to fail would not be covered anyway under the extended engine warranty so don't feel too bad.

99,200 mile replacement

Sorry if this isn't the correct thread, new here but trying. I recently bought a 2005 RX-8 with over 99K on it. Wasn't aware of the engine problems or warranty until I discovered this site. Car seemed to be running fine but I was curious after my reading here, I didn't have a reference point to start from since I never had an 8 before.. Initially took in for a compression check and they said everything was good. After more research here, I found their numbers were not "good", between 6.1-6.3 on both rotors, I printed out and took in the pages from the service manual that showed the acceptable range and asked to speak to the mechanic. He told me that you have to adjust for altitude and he had never seen optimal numbers in this area, SLC. I requested to see the factory chart showing the altitude adjustment and he was unable to produce it. He then told me that unless you bring the car in for "a loss of power" it isn't covered, "do you have a loss of power?", so of course I said yes, I must. He then informed that he would have to do a decarb and another compression check after that but I had to authorize it, which I did. happy to say, they called me the next day to inform me I was getting a new engine. The numbers were down to 5.6-5.9 after the decarb. Have the new engine and the car runs great, much quicker and winds up the RPM's a lot faster.

The mechanic was a nice guy and very knowledgeable and helpful in guiding me to the desired outcome. I'm thrilled that my car is like brand new now but irritated that it almost wasn't. I don't blame the mechanic, he was great and went so far as to tell me that if I wanted to bring in my own plugs and coils he would install them during the engine swap rather than paying dealer price. What irritates me is that if I were the average consumer I would have got screwed. It is only because of the knowledge and references I gained from this site that things worked out.To all RX-8 owners I say go to your dealer loaded with references, they assume you are stupid. While being polite, ask them to show or prove everything to you. Was funny how the guy started stuttering when I laid pages from their own service manual in front of him. Love my car and look forward to many miles of fun.
