I'm taking a drive through northern Frederick county sometime Sunday afternoon/early evening if anyone local (or not) would like to come along. I'm helping some friends from the Mid-Atlantic Cobra Association scout locations for their annual cruise, so there may be more straights than curves (just because they have IRS from the factory doesn't mean that they can turn!), but it should be a pretty scenic drive. Let me know if you're interested and I'll give you more information as I finalize my plans.

 

Saw a WWP with red tow hooks and black wheels w/ red lip and stickers on the right side rear window @ 450 in crofton on tuesday.

I was in the VR. Just saying whats up if that dude is on the club.

Well like an idiot i refilled my transmission with Royal Purple GL-5 75W-90 and my synchro's basically stopped working, what fun is an RX8 without a snappy 1-2 upshift at redline?!

So I've gone back to the Redline GL-4 MT-90 and once again the transmission slots into second at redline like locking in a bolt action rifle.

Moral of the story: GL-5 is bad for yellow metals, such as brass synchro's, fill your transmission with a GL-4 75W-90 (as per manufacturers instructions!) for maximum smiles and funs!

Anyone thats having issues with your transmission, there's a solution for you.

Hmmm, seems a though Swepco is giving you similar numbers to the factory fill. I thought the redline was pretty good, the royal purple was a big mistake but I got what I deserved for not reading the label :/

I think I'll stick with the redline for now but I'm definitely going to look into Swepco for future use. Thanks wankel bolt

The Swepco says it's GL-5 is it ok on brass synchros? I mean I suppose so, based on your test results, I'm not going to pretend to be all that savvy about that sort of thing.

 

Just grabbed some Rotella the other night. Going to give it a try soon.

I too made the same mistake when I got my car. I don't think it's damaging to the synchros, but instead prevents them from working correctly. I mean if it was wear or corrosive damage, it wouldn't come on so quickly (about 50 miles for me), and they wouldn't come back to life when returning to a different oil (even though I had to double-clutch for 2000 miles).

I have Redline MT-90 in mine too now, and as I said, after 2000 miles of letting my feet do the synchronization work, I can once again slam 1 to 2 at redline, without complaints.

 

I'm not all that smart on the spec myself, and didn't notice the difference in GL numbers. But fourth is much better hot and the wear numbers really speak volumes, I think.

The Swepco wear numbers are much better than the factory fill, but the factory fill includes the break-in period so I don't know it's a fair comparison. There could be some break-in wear still in the Red Line numbers, but not much.

Red Line MT-90 is great stuff and does make shifting buttery-smooth, but I was having trouble with fourth being tetchy on the track. So Swepco was really a desperation move based on experience racing first-gen RX-7 transmissions. Seems to have paid off.

Jon had mentioned about doing another mini trackday/get together, but the momentum died off and I ended up making audio based plans for the weekend. So I will be in the Protege 5 while the RX8, stays under its cover at home.

 

I actually am not going to be able to make it this weekend either.

I haven't decided 100% yet, but it is likely. After spending $2500 to fix the power steering and being quoted another $1400 a few months later to fix the same problem plus the mounting list of secondary repairs I am loosing my taste for it. Oh and my insurance went up again to around $250 per month. Between that and storage I'm paying close to $400 a month for a car that I drove around 20 miles this month.
I love the car but I don't think I can justify it anymore.

Wow..i think I'd be ready to let it go too lol...and 250 a month for insurance is insane, I'm pretty sure I'm younger than you with two speeding tickets and i pay like 80..but i know what you mean about driving it too, today us the first time I've had mine out since the end of September
