Hi all got the mid pipe in.. After um... some gaskets that didn't fit and stupid mistakes.. LOL .. I started the car with just the exhaust manifold on and good god... only got it to about 4000 rpm and it was sick... With the cat and pre-silencer gone car sounds more like a racer with little of that "street" rattle. Not lawn mower but like free breathing rotary. Also fumes galore come out now.. I get some nice little pops sometimes when shifting ect... pretty fun... I want to see if can get some flames out the back.. Still waiting for my Rotors... RX7store.net is a sorry excuse of a business. I just hope I don't have to go to court over this... I do enough legal work in the day... well hope everyone can make it to the Church races get some warm ups before our track day..

Hey everyone this will need to become a new Thread if more want to go.. But we are going to sevenstock10 in CA this year and it would be great if others would go. No official annocement on exact dates but I have read possibly late september like 9/22 weekend. But the even has been held in Oct. Thought it would be cool to meet up with the AZ crew and head out with them. Also, AZ car club I think helps with package deals such as parking, hotel, parking at events and even car club booth/tent. But I need to talk to them first to find out more. Not sure if anyone has looked into this. But it draws a pretty good crowd. Anyone else interested?

I will also see if we can get the sevenstock10 buzz going with the RX-7 crew and see if Tom from RotaryRX can assist in spreading the word and/or want to check it out.

Thanks guys...

Chow..

Justin

Well everyone.............

I am now one of the many who has ( will have) a new motor! Saturday I was on the way home from ABQ. and the car mis-fired like it had so many times before, but this time it was fatal! There was a random mis-fire p0300 followed by p0302 a mis-fire in rotor #2 as well as a p1701 (bank 1 too lean). At this moment I am not sure just how bad the grenading was (hole in block, cracked block and such). When The car had cooled down off enough & the smoke had stopped billowing out from under the car I was tryng to see what might be wrong. Now I have not, nor has anyone else done any other work on the motor other than University Mazda & Rotary RX since I bought the car, other than oil changes regularly. That is except for back in September when the Great Engine re-call of 06 was going on. When they worked on the car back then they changed the spark plugs. Well I, trusting the mechanics, did not double check any of the work that was done. Anyhow Saturday evening I decided to check the plug wires ( I know Kewl you mentioned it earlier, but I forgot about it)
and all were snug & tight except for rotor #2's trailing plug wire. It was so loose it barely would stay on the ceramic of the plug. I talked to Tom at Rotory RX this week and he feels that this was more than likely the ultimate cause, though that is not University Mazda's view. Either way I am getting a new motor.

Here are a few things you guys might want to do and keep in mind.

#1
Keep all maintanence records especially oil change records. Because I had Rotory RX do 3 of the oil changes I had to provide proof of these to Mazda North America so they would warranty the motor.

#2
If you had any work done during the Great Engine re-call of 06 especially having to do with the plugs............Check the Plug Wires ASAP!!!!!

#3
If your normal Warranty has run out and the Drive/Pwer Train Warranty is still in effect. Mazda North America does not provide for a loaner/rental car. So you are on your own for that bill!

#4
The free Towing is still in effect only if it proves to be a Engine/Power Train Failure even though your Original Warranty has expired, but you will have to front $100 for the towing on a C.C. that eventually will be re-imbursed if this prove true.

I talked with Mazda today and the New/Re-Built motor was approved and should be into the dealership this Monday and hopefully I should have the 8 back next Thursday. I also found out that they are going to extend the Engine/Power Train Warrenty for another 12,000 miles.

I am not so sure about being able to drive the 8 at the up coming Track Day on the 29th. I still plan on attending and if nothing else putt putt around the course to get the idea of the concept. That all depends on how many miles I can put on the 8 between the time I get it back & T.D.!! Does anyone know how many miles that should be for a New Motor Breakin for a rotory???

This is racingbeats recommendation on breaking in your engine...
http://www.racingbeat.com/FRmazda4.htm

Well glad you are getting a new engine...

Unfortunately, your engine will not have enough miles for race days.

Do not underestimate stinger's ability to rack up the miles before track day. He does not want to miss track day....period

You definately got that right Kewl! I am already thinking of how many miiles I can rack up in 10 or 11 days! Since it is 74 miles to work & back & I shold have the car for 6 working days that comes to 444 miles. That leaves me two full Saturdays and one full Sunday before Track Day! Oh and dont forget that it is about 45 miles from my house to the Track as well. And Racing Beat says :

RX-8 Break-In

Mazda's Guidelines

The Mazda RX-8 Owners Manual lists the following information for the break-in period of a new vehicle:

"No special break-in is necessary, but a few precautions in the first 1000 KM (600 miles) may add to the performance, economy, and life of your Mazda.

- Don’t race the engine.
- Don’t maintain one constant speed for long.
- Don’t drive constantly at full-throttle or high engine RPM for extended periods of time.
- Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
- Avoid full-throttle starts."
I think I can make those miles by Track Day!

Just had a quick question for anyone. Has anyone seen an 8 with just the mazdaspeed front bumper, but everything else stock. I don't have the cash to buy the whole kit, but I cracked my front bumper and am looking at the MS front bumper to replace it. I have never seen just the front, so I don't know if it would look stupid. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

I've thought of doing that, too. The only thing I worry about is the difference in ground clearance on the front and sides. Without the skirts, I'm not sure how that would look. Then again, I'm not sure you could even tell. I'm pretty sure I'll do it - one day. What color are you?

ti gray. I was thinking the same thing about the ground clearance, but I think that the tires would hide it fairly well.

I had a small mishap (5mph tops) with the rear bumper of an S-10 on my way to work and after I replaced the grille the only thing left to fix is the cracked bumper. Can't tell from far away, but if you are standing in front of it you can see it...

BigAAA....are you planning on joining us on Track Day? Check out this thread, https://www.rx8club.com/mountain-forum-46/albuquerque-track-day-111946/ and lets us know if you can make it. If you haven't done a day on the track with your 8 you really don't want to miss it. It will give you a new appreciation for what the 8 can do.

Same color here. I'd consider one of the knock-off MS bumpers, but haven't looked into it that hard yet. Once the turbos are done (hopefully in a week or so...) I want coilovers. Then comes the appearance stuff.

No, I wish. I am going to be out of town on business all next week so I won't be able to go. I hope we get enough people that like it so that it can happen again.

And let me know when you get your new bumper so I can buy your old one off of you...

Help! My 8 has recently developed a power loss issue!
I live in Edgewood and drive to and from Abq every day for work. I don't notice anything on my drive in and cruising around town is fine. However, the car becomes gutless on the drive up the hill now that the weather is warming up.

I can't seem to maintain 70mph in 6th gear at 4000rpm. Once it starts to lose power, even down-shifting doesn't help much. The total one-way drive is about 26 miles and I am at least 12 to 15 miles into the drive when I notice the problem. I have not gotten any CEL errors at this time.

I have searched for threads/posts related to power loss and the thoughts are generally related to the catalytic converter and/or the coils. A few people said they got their catalytic converter replaced and the 8 ran better then it ever did.

Have any of you had this problem or read anything about it? I think I should get it into University Mazda before it gets more serious but I was hoping for some opinions before I call them.

I did not have those exact problems but, I did end up getting a new Cat installed in my 8 & it sure does seam to have more PEP! They had checked my CAT before re-installing it and it passed then the technician went to put it in and tilted it and most of the insdies fell out (at least that is what I was told). So Univ. Mazda replaced it with a new one. Maybe it is just me but it the car does seam to run a heck of a lot better now. Though it may just be the New Engine or both I really couldn't tell you which.

Update.... Still no word on totaled or going to fix.... from many pictures of other accidents it is easily a total. Or will end up trying to fix it then total it.... well anyway still dealing with all the fun things that come with an accident... Just to warn you all, I am considering getting a C5 (97 to 2004) or a C6 (2005 or newer) vette. Many to choose from in my price range with very low mileage 15k or less. Also performance parts are about the same price as the 8, tires as well. 450 plus HP in no time. Not to mention vette gets better gas mileage on the hwy. I know I know....

But I will keep you all posted.

What kind of milage do you get in your 8 on the highway... I get an easy 26 to 29 highway mpg [19mpg in town ], I figured a vette wouldn't be higher than 30.

Depending on how you drive, the vette might be better for you. Its not even in the same category as an 8, so it's hard to pass up a chance to own a vette just because you liked the 8 so much. Now if you were going to opt for an s2k or a 350Z you'd be hearing another story...

I'm traveling (flying) to LA this week, but on my return at the end of the week I will be giving serious consideration to cutting down on the number of vehicles at the homestead. The 8 will likely be one to go. The clutch and my long injured left foot is finally getting to be more discomfort than I care to deal with.

Is there anyone any of you know that might like to discuss this with me in the interest of finding the 8 a good home?
