Mazda unveil new concept: Mazda Shinari
Could be right -- who knows. Here's the same pic undistorted to reflect closer to reality. I just don't see a second door in this one...? The rear wheel is forward and it just looks a 2 -door with that kickup at the floor panel.

Here'a an interesting comparison. I tried to make them pretty much the same scale. Obvuoisly they are drawings...but there's still a sizeable (pun intended) difference in wheelbase, roofline, lots of things...perhaps more than can be explained just because they are drawings??
Here is some Video of the Shinari ( at end of report 3:18)...Now is that engine sound a Rotary??

. By the way, for whoever asked, I was the one who found the Taiki vid on Youtube a few years back where they drove it up on to a ramp of some sort.Paul.

Its a down selected candidate of the final design, heres another picture of a few of the other final candidates/design language, and the render you guys are debating is extremely forshortened from the angle of the camera,,,,

and besides heres the actual image thats in the background,,,

They probably went through a serious campaign of selection starting with around 20+ unique designs and then down selected from there,,, I do this type of work at my job all the time,,,

Seems super luxurious too, especially with the interior trim level, lots of alacantara and shiney bits to go all around. I remember years ago Mazda leaking that they were going to break into the luxury market and compete with Acura, Infinity and Lexus, I wonder if this is a tip in that direction??? hmmm indeed.

i'm sorry, but i have to whole-heartedly disagree with the "looks" on this one...
that car, imo, is THE ugliest concept mazda has put out to date- and for some of the most obvious reasons...
- it's big, bulky, long, and both angular and curvy in the weirdest places.
- is it trying to be a jag? an aston? a maseratti? maybe it's trying to be a hyundai genesis coupe with 4 doors? or, maybe a toyota solara?
it basically looks like a mazda 6 with a serious identity crisis... it cannot decide if it's a coupe, a sedan, korean, european, or japanese!
i'd heartily take the furai, the kabura, or the senku over that blue whale of a monstrocity...
mazda's loss of it's chief designer is already beginning to show... the smiley crop of smiley smiley cars on the road right now already prove that. and, this is just a preview of the worst yet to come- IF they continue down this design road...

I think the reason that someone may think the car may be thick/bulky is the reduction in surface area of key feature elements like the headlights and tail lights. for years the trend has been to create larger surface area in light housings even though the lighting fixtures have become smaller(mainly with the madating of LEDS and Halogens). Now the trend seems to be now focused on reducing that profile, ths creating a thick bulgy look, even thought proportions like wheel bases and track widths may only see minimal changes.

As an owner of an RX-8, it's funny that you complain about it not deciding if it's a sedan or coupe. This design is pretty secure in it's stance as a sedan. It could be altered a bit to be a coupe, but it's not exactly in between.
Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but considering the general reactions so far, this is a great styling choice on mazda's part. There's a much higher rate of approval than rejection so far, which is all that matters when it comes to sales.
It does look a bit on the large side, but I'd like to see it next to another car just as a point of reference. As it is a concept, it's not out of the question for it to be trimmed down a bit. Overall, I'd say it's a very good direction for mazda. It has a classier look than previous designs and looks modern without being to unrealistic.
