I hear a lot of complaints about the 335's looks, I have to say this is actually one of the things that drew me to it. The sharper more agressive looks combined with the performance of the 335 was a key feature in getting this car versus say an Audi S4. RS4 would have been the dream car but who has $180,000 to spend on a car.

Whilst the new shape is not everyone's cup of tea you will always have polarised opinions on a new shape. The RX-8 had it's critics yet we all loved it.

I am not picking on the RX-8 because I love my car, however it got to be a bit too boy racer for me (that is my problem partly because of the 20in Blingers) so when I am taking a client somewhere the BM fits in more with the image that people expect in my industry. The low slung sports car is what I fell in love with with the 8, however it is the same reason why I have to get something else.

I am always curious what people go to from the 8 because it was a car so unique that it is almost like starting from scratch trying to find a replacement for it. For me the only way I could find something worthy of replacing it with was a car twice it's price.

Agreed Gibbo, which is why I always find these kind of threads interesting.

Please let us have your impressions after you've owned the 335i for a while.

That'd be my short list for your Dad. I only include the Subey in the event he wants to spend half the price of the others.

Sure. That's how I approached it. I know plenty of professional, conservative people your Dad's age and these are the kind of thing they buy and enjoy.

Hmm...he's an accountant, right?

IME, best to take him to a BMW/Audi/Merc dealer with a good business manager, who can explain how they structure their financing...'cos he'll want to lease at those prices, probably with a guaranteed buy-back.

Otherwise, if it's a cash buy, I'm betting he'll want to stay under the LCT (which is what..$60k now?) so that means Mazda, Sub, Honda...none of which today give him the 'relative' luxury and size of his old 929

LOL, fair enough Kall. I agree they're not exactly exciting. Ditto for the Maxima - these things are a better drive than you might think and I know a few satisfied owners. They're also great value at the price but not very nice to look at.

I guess that's why I keep coming back to the Audi. Does everything your Dad wants but it's still a classy car for you to ride in.

the legend rear end can not be worse than the new civic rear end. if i can live with it and drive it, then i cant see anything wrong with the legend rear end.
i like honda cars.

I don't like them either .. they look very

I like the 929 though, don't know why but I've always kindof liked them. I really like the Audi A6 too ... but they cost too much down here to be good value.

lol, but it's front wheel drive! A retirement car is supposed to be a big rear wheel drive barge of a thing.

I can't keep up with all the action on this thread! Don't worry about the hijack, I'm enjoying it! Ref above : kill the Saab. Although recently facelifted it's still ANCIENT underneath. The platform is more than 10 years old, and it was hardly leading edge to start with. IMHO Saab is teetering on the edge of extinction. GM have simply let the brand languish. They have two main models only: 9-3 and 9-5. That's about two too few to ever be profitable. I say this as a Saab owner BTW - more about that in a few posts time...

Of the rest, gven your father's profile I'd go Audi A6 ( who's only failing seems to be a rather average ride) or the Merc E class. The E is a wonderfully spacious, soft riding, comfortable and accomplished car. It's the only car in your list that can truly carry the title "limo" IMHO. One other option I'd suggest if he'd prefer something smaller: IS350. Not my kind of car ( neither's the Merc of course), but still a beautifully made, comfortable machine. And we all know Lexus consistenly win just about every customer satisfaction survey, so there's every chance he'll be a satisfied customer too.

um. Kall..I have this terrible fear that if you mention Audi A6 to your Dad and then show him one, he might go out, see a passing Commondoor, and decide to get one of those

Actually, Nick's suggestion re Lexus is not bad...it is sort of successfully where Mazda was trying to get to with the ill-fated Eunos badging
