But hey, each to his own. As long as you are happy with it Nick, that is all that counts.
Having said that, not everyone likes my aubergine shinka, but I don't give a stuff.

No flames lit!
The world would be a very boring place indeed if we all agreed to buy the same cars, all the time. At the end of the day, every car is a set of compromises. Paying more doesn't necessarily mean less compromises. However it may mean different compromises that could result in a more attractive package for a certain buyer.
I'd love to have been able to buy a Cayman (or even a base Boxster!) for example. But I couldn't compromise on rear room for 2 growing kids. Result: I know for sure I didn't buy the best sports car for the money. But I did buy a good compromise for me and my family, that I can still enjoy driving LOTS, even though I will continue to miss some of the things the RX8 did especially well...

Let's chill guys.
I guess I took a risk when I posted this thread that someone might take offense or find it objectionable. I'm really saddened this occurred. I genuinely only wanted to share some experiences ( and pics!) that I thought might be of interest to a few of you, given my 3 year history with the 8, and the fact that at some stage everyone on this forum will eventually consider replacing their car.
The main points I would really like to make are this:
1. Replacing the RX8 is a lot harder than many might think. If you are contemplating this, expect to make compromises on agility or practicality or both, because I can't think of a single car at anywhere near "sensible" prices that does both these specific attributes as well as the 8.
2. For some of you, a 335i may eventually be one of the "possible" candidates. Practicality is arguably better as is straight line performance, refinement and quality of finish ( as it should be for the price!). The Bimmer turbo 6 also sounds truly exciting and the car is very, very comfortable and inviting to sit in. The handling balance is right up there, as are the brakes . But you will lose agility and also that wonderfully compliant ride that the RX8 still manages to pull off under really difficult road conditions. Additionally, while the the manual gearbox is great, it has much longer throws and the meaty steering is fine but no more communicative than the RX8's light and precise rack.
I hope I may have helped a few of you to re-visit what's great about your car (and perhaps hold onto it longer if you were wavering!), and others to maybe rule in or out the particular replacement option I chose. If so,
then I guess I "dun some good" with this post.
Thanks also for your positive comments. I am proud of my new car, and I consider myself bloody lucky to have been able to come this close to driving my childhood dream, the BMW M3. So no regrets here then....
Cheers
Nick

Sounds like you are pretty happy with your choice, as I am with mine...and that's all that matters
You make a very good point: the 8 is a very hard car to replace and you either have to spend a lot more money or do something quite radical. In choosing the Polo, I've found you can do different, but as much fun, things, all at a pretty good price.
And -- like you -- I've found other forums aren't nearly as much fun or value as the RX-8 ones. The VW forums seem to be inhabited by people with the attention span of a gnat. I'll never complain about off-topic posts again
