when are you going to bring it to a meet so one of us can drive it?.... or take it into the dealer.

i took it to the dealer tuesady and they did the new flash.
new coils are going to be put in this weekend and clean out
some of the carbon also. i already did a sea foam treatment,
so that, a new cat, new plugs, new coils, engine cleaning,
and the re-flash. if that does not fix my heat problem then
she's off to some dealer for a trade in.

Anyone want to guess where all these people are going?
I see them all the time at car dealerships. Seems there is a new one everyday. I always say HI and ask where they came from. "mortgage industry" is the most common reply.

Still baffles me though. You leave one distressed industry to work in another distressed industry.

This is when you are happy to work for the government. with crappy fuel prices and cost of living, its nice to at least have job security.

Michael, is your car srtill covered through Mazda?

only the engine. everything else is over warranty.
the guy at the dealer wanted me to let him know,
how my car turns out. i guess he wants to see if
i'll end up coming back for a new engine ..
my coils should arrive sometime today at my job,
since i'm vacation i'll have to go and pic them up.
i'm almost ready to pop them in after i get home..

.... I'm confused....

Michael, your having 2 problems?

1 over heating
2 lack of power

all the stuff you described above might help the lack of power, but nothing you have listed there will help with over heating. you need to look at the cooling system for that. radiator, thermostat, cap, flush, fan .... you know, the basics.

now, if the cat is bad you WILL have a loss of power AND it CAN overheat because you are having to work the engine SOOOO hard just to move the car. thats about the only thing on your list that would make me say "yeah, that might be both".

my best guess was that it lost power because the engine got too hot.
needle reads normal in the car which is weird, because it does not move
even when its really hot and being driven hard. the cats been changed
to a hi flow. could be carbon build up or coils, or just engine going out.
i will eliminate a few more things this weekend.

He's not over heating.
When the car is running at higher temps because of the weather, he has a lack of power.

... so how do you kow its hot if the needles does not move off "normal"
do you have another gauge? does it start puking water out?

Lack of power... yeah, try all of the above. or just take it into the dealer and tell them that you have a lack of power and see what they say... maybe an engine replacment is in order. (did they verify that it is good?)

@Michael -
40mph in 3rd?
I'm usually shifting to 2nd gear at 30-35mph.
I'll try 40 in 3rd on my way home, but I don't usually shift that quick.
Let me know what rpms or mph you shift for 2nd and 3rd, and I'll give it a shot when I'm driving home.

ohhhh gotcha. I took it as over heating.

ok sooooo, when its cool out, like at night, does it run strong and hard?
then when it warms up, like in the middle of a hot day (today) it has a lack of power?

do I have it right now?

almost^^ i can drive in hot weather all day with no problems.
it pulls hard, but when i take it out for a two hr drive that has
some long hills to climb then she wants to start feeling sluggish.
but once its cooled down she start to pull again.
example, went to morongo a lot of hills to go up driving
75 - 80mph. when i got there it was sluggish it would take
time to get up to speed in any gear. on the way home still alittle
sluggish casue we did not stay long, but no hills to climb.
we were going down hill most of the way so something cooled
down and car pulled better.
temp was about 105

yeah sometimes i shift early in hopes of saving a little gas.
but even at 40 in third she should still pull. it seemed like
it would take 10 sec. for it to get to 60. not that long but alot
longer then it should have. my worse power loss is always in victorville.
i guess that hill just takes so much out of my car.

ok, this is important.
when you are in Victorville or morongo, does it drive slugish the entire time you are there... even if you let the car sit for a bit and cool. then on the way home it starts to run better?

only when i'm there a short time in victorville. when i go and stay for awhile
then i don't have a problem. most of the time i'm there for about
30 min are less to drop someone off. then i'm back on the road.
at morongo we parked in the parking structure but we only stayed
1 1\2hr. so not much time to cool down.

the reason I ask is because I suspect the problem is the nut behind the steering wheel.

seriously, you live down very close to sea level, where it is both cooler and lower in elivation.

then you go up where the air is thiner and hotter, its a doubble whammy, and your not "used to it". (neither is the computer in your car).

I did notice when I had he RX-8 it was very picky about the air. when we would go to big bear even on a cool day, the car ran SOOOO much slower (havent any of you noticed?) then when we come back down, its like "YEAH MY CAR IS BACK!)

the 1 1/2 hour cool down in Morango should have been more then enough time to release any heat that would be a problem.

have you ever had a problem down in your neck of the woods?

have you ever had anyone drive your car that is familure with it/RX-8s?

I'm not saying your wrong... your likley not, I am just trying to see if you really have a problem, or are you just not used to the way the RX-8 takes higher altatude and thin hot air.

EDIT: I am trying to get more at the altitude then I am the hot air. yo said it ran fine in 105 degree weather, but not untill you came down the hill right?.... LIke I said, I noticed in my car that even a cool day in big bear was like driving a Ford Festiva.

hmm... am curious- what rpm was the engine pulling at 40mph in 3rd gear?

i'm usually in 2nd gear if i'm only going 40mph, but it could vary depending on road conditions.

engine RPM would be the same as your car.

tire size, rear gear, tranny gear ratio, and engine RPM all decide MPH. that can not be changed without changing one of the components.

EIDT:
remember the part in The Fast and the Furious when he goes into the shop and gets NOS because his car toped out at 140.... well guess what, that NOS does nothing to increase top speed. all it will do it get you there faster. the engine RPM needs to go up to go faster. (or better yet change the gear ratio to see a bigger change).... ( of curse changing the gear ratio will lose off the line pull)... blah blah blah.... but this is getting rather off subject. sorry

only afew people have driven my car other then a dealer. and they had no idea what they were doing, except my friend i let drive it back from solvang.
i thought you might be hinting at altitude, and that did make me think about it.
but i have driven to vegas twice and both times it did ok.
when you are trying to follow the speed limit putting the car in third
at 40 is not bad. when it does not go from 40 to 60 in afew sec thats bad.
and yes i admit it i am a nut at times, well that feels better.

yep rpm would not go up so no speed. now when i press the gas
all the way down you could here more air coming in and speed started to
pick up. i had to get to higher speed in low gear so i could change gears
without snailing along.
