Hey what's up guys. Name is AC and I've been a rotor head since 85. Just moved to vegas and looking for a rotary doctor. Been working on my 04 8 in my garage and put in plugs and exhaust kit but still have the same problem with power loss and fuel smell. So let me know who is a good rotary guy out here and at the same time I can start meeting my fellow rotor heads out here. I live by buffalo and Vegas area. Thanks in advance.

AC Links: welcome!
While I'm not actually a resident of Las Vegas, I've known a lot of these guys for years so you're in great hands and good company with the Vegas Rotary crowd.
You mentioned loss of power and gas smell.
do you smell the gas from the rear of the vehicle, inside the vehicle or inside the cabin?

What 'exhaust kit' did you go with?
Off the top of my head I'd say you have an issue with the catalytic converter on your RX8. (assuming it has one installed)

Thanks jedi54
That's what I thought since I had seen the glowing o2 sensor but I put in a cat w/no catalytic converter and still it was the same. Now I put new wires and plugs but still the same. Cheepy eBay system :/

you're welcome.
  • Plugs are new - check
  • Catalytic with no Cat installed. (basically it's just a straight pipe now) - Check. That explains the gas smell at the back of the car. Rotaries are quite smelly when there's no catalytic converter.
  • New wires - check

are you getting a Check Engine light at all? (you might even have one just because you removed the cat)
how about a Blinking CEL?

my next thought would be your ignition coils. Do you know the last time those were replaced? Do you have access to a timing light?

Depending on the type of gas smell it could also be the the pump leaking.
Raw gas smell verses burnt gas smell

Yeah the light was on before I switched the exhaust and it would blink when it would loss power, then it would stop blinking when it would go back to normal and get all the power back. After I changed everything it was better then it all came back. As if it floods the it clears out and gets power back. But it's really bad now. The gas smell of fumes are there but I do smell a little bit of raw at times.

Welcome to our area..... Is the raw fuel smell previlant in the interior of the car? If so the fuel pump is under the drivers side rear seat. It has been known to loose the seal and cause the fuel smell in the cabin area. Loss of power......that could mean lots of things.

Local Rotary Doc......Karack - Rotary Evolution.

Local meetings off this thread are extreamly few and far between. If you want to get together with other rotor heads in the area then go to sincity rotary .com. They meet every Thursday evening. I will have Ray (13X) answer this post with more information.

I rarely make the meetings cuz I work early in the morning. Looking forward to meeting you.

Thanks! I checked, opened the FP panel and all seems good. No smell what so ever.

Cool! Thanks! I will try to make it tonight. I think its about 13mins from me. Only problem is that the car runs ruff. The funny part is that it runs fine for a short moment when it wants too :/

We need a total of 6 cars to secure that pricing otherwise it's $300

We need a list of names and the engine management system on the car

the fuel pumps tend to crack at the outlet port out here in the desert heat. i have a pile of OEM RX8 pumps that have cracked, someday i will redesign the outlet to revive the housings for a better design.

pull up the passenger rear seat base at the front and move it out of the way, remove the 4 screws covering the pump and pop the retaining clip off. turn the key on but engine off to prime the pump and check for drips coming from under the hose connection.

i'm actually surprised more 8's haven't burned down due to this issue, since it seems rather common. benefit is the fuel leak isn't in a critical area.

and if your transmission ever breaks just throw it away and replace it... lol. there's no shortcuts on the Aisin 6 speed like there was on the older transmissions. *sigh*

^Replaced mine last week for the same problem.

You may need to use a mirror to see it. Mine had a hairline crack on the underside of the connection elbow coming out of the top of the fuel pump. Check for signs of previous leaking even if it's not at the moment. Mine would leak intermittently, usually with a full tank (which you don't want if you are going to replace it).

Hey guys,
Would guys know of any place that is renting out some space in their shops for cheap? I'm looking to start a small business out there, but its more of a part time type of thing, so I just need a small and cheap place out there.

Thanks

There are a lot of small office spaces with very low per foot charges charges in Vegas. Not knowing what your business will be is a limiting factor.
