Head and Neck Restraint Systems

There are many new products out in the world so what are you using, and how do they like them? This is a new system from Leatt-Brace

I tried the R3 Head & Neck restraint and found it extremely uncomfortable for use in a formula car. The angle of the back blade was not right for the application, though the maker of the product said it would work (I ended up being a guniea pig for that application). I also didn't like that one needed to use a foam seatback template cut to receive the back blade of the device.


Since then, I've used Hans without any problem or discomfort in harnessed vehicles- both 20 and 30 degree/ opan and closed wheel.

Does the back blade of that Leatt-Brace require a cut-out foam template on the seat like the R3?

Tried & true HANS device. Mine is a vintage model, circa 1999. Custom made carbon fiber Hubbard Downing HANS - pre barcode even. I've replaced the pads (the gel pads are much more comfortable) and I replace the tethers every other season. It's light, comfortable and (once you get used to the slightly limited side-to-side range of motion) unobtrusive.

I have heard that the R3 system with that long back plate is not user friendly. The Leatt that we have here is very comfortable i dont know about in formula cars yet but i have used it in a few cars and the system is very nice....the only down side is it is some what hard to buckle the belts because of the front chin on the brace...but with belts buckled and tight in the seat it is very comfortable and range of sight motion is outstanding!!!

I use the HANS as well....

Not much for comparisons though cause it's the only one I've used

Why would someone use anything other than HANS? Why re-invent the wheel? Of course I'm quite biased.

Some sanction racing do not allow hanns......they must use other things besides the hans because of the lack or range of motion side to side. It is not re inventing the wheel the hans is not perfect....nothing is guaranteed....so people are trying to get a little closer to perfection....and there are many people who do not like the fact of drilling into a helmet, because they are loosing structural integrity of the helmet. Just some quick thoughts no bashing intended.....

I personally don't know of any series that prohibits use of the HANS device. Not saying that's not the case... but hey if HANS is actually the required head & neck restraint for Formula 1 it's good enough for moi!

I am curious about one thing though... if the device you mention doesn't require anchors to be drilled into the helmet, how does the yoke attach to the helmet?

There are many offroad racing series that do not allow them because of the side to side movement and because they move around so much that they are worried that the belts will come off the sholder harness. On the leatt there is a strand that you slip onto the buckles of the helmet that tie the helmet to your chin you place the slip knots all the way at the end of them where they attach to the helmet. There is a piece that drops into the back of the device that has a lever on the outside that locks the piece in place and unlocks it. send me an email and ill send you pics of it. email GarrettA@TriPointEngineering.com






They have all their testing data, sled pics, and some really good vids on the crashes with and without braces. There is a vid on the site also that shows an offroad truck rolling about 4 times with in car camera showing what the brace was doing. Check it out at.

also one of the issues with these different systems comming out is that all the test for them to pass were designed for the HANS.....so some of the devises would fail because they couldnt be tested correctly...and yes i completely agree if it is goodenough for F1 then they must be doing a great job.
