tail light water!

cleaning the car yesterday and i seen condensation on my driver side tail light....i thought it was on the outside till i wiped it and nothing came off!....how bad of a problem is this with our cars because i know of quite a few that i seen already....one other in person (flyboi1121) had it bad too...i never got in any accidents or opened the lights up!...this is sad cuz in my last car i had aftermarket tail lights and this never happened...only on the oem...and dont flame me cuz i did a search and it pulled up nothing!.....

RedRexNJ 05-21-2005 04:57 AM

Some of the cars had problems with the seals being compromised due to the solvent used to clean the lights upon delivery. There have also been reports of the trunk lid hitting the driver's side light when closed too forcefully and cracking the light just enough to let water in. I believe there is a TSB on this here. Don't know if the stealership will do anything about this, though. Good luck

cgrx 05-21-2005 05:08 AM

they will only replace the lights if there is standing water in them.
Condensation isn't enough and some dealers say it is normal and designed that way

JERRY_S 05-24-2005 09:48 PM

get it fixed

same thing happened to mine, exact same side. They replaced the whole thing. Sad thing, now my trunk doesn't close like it used to. It now has a slight bigger gap between the trunk and bumper.

Jina_Marie070572 05-24-2005 11:36 PM

Yes purchased mine in April and I just noticed the same thing and it's on the drivers side too. Guess we'll have to call the dealer and see if there's anything they will do

Dealers say a lot of things to avoid doing things.
I bought mine used - had condensation. Dealer R/R 'd rt tail with little squabble. Only question is - is there any indication of damage from outside of light. If not - should be replaced under warranty.

This is indeed covered under warranty. The dealer will replace your entire taillight. I've had BOTH of mine replaced...no repeated condensation since, so I'm happy.

cgrx 06-01-2005 12:11 PM

I have a mosquito in mine

gateCrasher 06-01-2005 06:28 PM

Mine has it too. Just noticed after a hard rain. Damn.

red_rx8_red_int 06-01-2005 08:44 PM

I have the same problem, waiting on parts for the dealer to fix.

RX8 XTC 06-01-2005 09:00 PM

they will fix it just go and tell them about it and they will Replace them it happend to me too and it only was just fog in thier :-D

MPG > HP 06-01-2005 09:21 PM

Had this fixed, too. The dealer needed to see the condensation, so it took two trips. Don't know if a photo would be convincing enough, but it would be worth a try.

MDRX8 06-02-2005 06:42 AM

Water

Saw a 8 while on vacation and it had about 2 inches of water slooshing around in his tail light. He definitely had a leak somewhere!!! Mazda needs to step up to the plate on some of these issues!!

All8Up 06-16-2005 07:19 PM

thank god! I thought it was something that I did. But just like you guys I have a LOT of condensation on the driver side tail light. I just have to tap the light and we have major drops rolling. The stealerships haven't let me down yet.... yet. I hope they will take care of this or I'll be pissed. No more $$$$!!! Just replaced my entire AC cause of the huge 7" scrap of re-tread road tire that the huge intake opening welcomed. Ca-ching... $600. Grrr... don't hurt my baby!!

arattle 07-11-2005 08:51 AM

Mine just happened last week. At first, there was a lot of condensation. After it rained all day on Thursday, I got about a 1/2 inch of standing water in the taillight! So bizarre, the poor little spider is drowned :-/

-arattle (taking it to the dealer)

fiero_sc 07-14-2005 02:14 PM

Mine is in waiting for a driver's side taillight. Was hoping it would all be done when I took it in to get the brake sqeal fixed last week but unbelievable they had none in stock.
btw--just getting condesation in it.

clydejmuggs 07-14-2005 10:06 PM

THe problem is not the light/lens it is the gasket between it and the body. There a new gaskets to fix this. Have the dealer call the tech line..

Katchoo 08-10-2005 08:58 PM

Frazzle...water in my driver's side tail light now...heavy rain or carwash? Not sure which, but it pisses me off!

I had this same thing happen to my headlights, they had condensation in them. My dealership replaced them, no questions asked.

Can't hurt to take in and ask.

msrecant 09-07-2005 08:42 PM

I took my 8 in today because of condensation in the left rear tail light after it rains. This is not a part they stock and they made me book a shop appointment (a week and a half ago) so the tech can look at it before they even order the replacement part.

Now it hasn't rained here in over a week, so when I take it in today of course the fixture is clear as a bell, no condensation. However, I did take a digital picture of the fixture after the last rain (showing fixture, condensation and license plate) and so I just handed the picture to the service writer when I dropped the car off. Got a really weird look back from her but she didn't say anything and when I picked the car up I found out they did go ahead and order the replacement fixture.

What we do for our 8s ...

RX-8 8-XЯ 09-09-2005 01:11 PM

I live near Seattle and last spring but didn't correct it then (pregnant wife took up most of my time) took it to the dealer last week for unrelated TSB work and mentioned it, but no condensation no fix... I'm just waiting for the rain

At least you shouldn't have to wait long. What if you lived in Phoenix, AZ?

Delmeister 09-16-2005 01:20 PM

My driver's side taillight was completely covered with condensation on the inside. After four days in the sun, most of the water evaporated. I called my dealer and told him about it. He said he would talk to the rep for instructions on how to handle it. The rep told him to: remove the taillight, dry it out completely with a heat gun, seal the leak, put the taillight back, and then wait and see what happens. I asked the dealer how he expected to find the leak. He said he was hopeful that it would be evident. I'm sceptical but I'll play along for now. In the meantime it rained and the condensation is back (although not as severe). Haven't had a chance to get to the dealer yet.

OfficerFarva 09-17-2005 06:18 PM

i had that same exact prob a few months back. took it to mazda and they replaced the tail light free of charge, so its definitely warranty work. sucks that it happens though.

Delmeister 10-06-2005 07:28 PM

Well it rained like crazy the night before I was to take the car in to dry out the tailight. The tech took one look at all the condensed water in the light and said it would be impractical to dry it out. They ordered a new light and replaced it under warranty today. :)

What bothers me is that this may be a generic problem, possibly brought about by slamming the trunck down too hard (something my wife just loves to do). If it is generic, then it will likely happen again.

Neddie Seagoon 10-06-2005 08:31 PM

I had the same problem with my driver-side rearSomeone I work with had the same problem, same side with his RX8. We both had them replaced under warranty. My passanger side is fine... except for the dead spider inside!!

msrecant 10-06-2005 10:21 PM

There is a TSB out about the trunk lid contacting the light fixture creating several wear points on the trunk lid and the light. The fix is a new trunk sealing gasket that increases the clearance between the lid and the fixture.

Yes, I believe this is one of the causes of this problem as the light fixture I had that collected condensation was also the one which previously had the contact issue covered by the TSB. A sample size of one, so its not statistically rigorous, but it is an odd coincidence.

Davidrx8 10-24-2005 11:34 AM

Done!

:wiggle: Finally got the tail light replaced - under warranty. I was ready to put a few goldfish in my drivers side tail light for fun!

VBprogrammer666 10-25-2005 03:14 PM

After 30k miles and 8 straight days of rain, I noticed condensation on my passenger side taillight. My wife brought my car in today for the 30k service and told them about the condensation. She said the dealer didn't flinch and put in an order for new gaskets for both taillights.

Some dealers are jerks and some understand the value of good service. Luckily, my dealer (Weisleder in Brick, NJ) is one of the good ones.

Gaskets? I believe they replaced the entire tail light assembly to fix the condensation problem for my 8.

My wife told me they said gaskets. I didn't check the receipt to see exactly what they plan on doing. I'll have to take a closer look. Thanks for the heads up.

Edit - Just looked at the paperwork, dealer order new tailight to replace the one with condensation and a new gasket for the other one, without condensation.

Mr.Wankel 10-25-2005 05:06 PM

Same problem on my passenger side tail light. Dealer is going to replace the whole tail light. Until then I put a goldfish in there. Cats freak out when I drive by. :wiggle:

mlx8 10-26-2005 08:06 AM

Ditto, now I'm noticeing the front fog lights have condensation in them as well. Oh well, another call to the dealer.... see if these are covered by the same "Oh yeah, happens all the time. I'll order a new one in and give you a call when it comes in...."

Philip_SA 11-02-2005 02:08 PM

Yep, i am in SA, and exactly the same problems.very strange, mine is however both but the one much more than the other.

Red Devil 11-17-2005 03:12 PM

Just noticed a lot of condensation and water pooling in my driver's side tail light this morning. Guess I'll be taking it in to the dealer. Given that it's now cold here in Chicago, I don't anticipate it evaporting any time soon, so I should have sufficient evidence when I show.

NordicRx8 12-04-2005 07:52 PM

i had the same problem with the water in the light and the spider...does the spider ship with the light ?

rogue2 12-04-2005 08:09 PM

I drove to work in a heavy rain storm and noticed condensation in my driver side tail light. went out the next morning to check it out. Not kidding, an inch of f'n water in my tail light. had to pull out the bulbs and cram paper towels through them to get the water out.

i am going to the dealer to have them fix it this week. thanks for reminding me.

Roto8 12-04-2005 08:28 PM

Happened to mine, took it to the dealer the other day, they are replacing both for free.

Low Fly'n 8 12-04-2005 09:00 PM

Just had passenger side tail light assembly replaced Friday under warranty. Dealer just wanted to see it first to confirm that it hadn't been damaged in a wreck. In and out in 30 minutes.

maggotcorpse666 12-04-2005 09:37 PM

My pass. side tail light has had condensation in it for over a month. Took it to two dealerships and both told me it is normal and that they would not replace it.

msrecant 12-04-2005 10:14 PM

Call Mazda USA Customer service and complain. It is not normal. As you can see, other dealerships are routinely covering this under warranty.

vgirl 12-05-2005 01:51 PM

Condensation in tail light

My drivers side tail light has condensation in too!

ALWAZL8 12-05-2005 02:03 PM

I just had my drivers side tail light replaced last week.... under warranty.

rogue2 12-05-2005 08:59 PM

Going to dealer tomorrow. Half inch of standing water in my driver side tail light again. This is crap. I hate stuff like this. The service manager at my dealership is a total A-hole to.

cooldriver88 12-06-2005 01:08 PM

I first had water in my driver’s side tail light so I paid a place to change it and I got a new one, but now I noticed that I have water in my passenger side tail light! And apparently I'm not the only one with a little spider in my tail light, he even made a tiny web.

maggotcorpse666 12-06-2005 01:24 PM

I called a third dealership today and they put my new tail light on order. They said it should be in this week. I just can't believe it took me three dealerships to finally get this fixed.

rogue2 12-13-2005 02:02 PM

No more fish bowl. Replaced under warranty. Kudos to Legacy Mazda for turning their costomer service issues around.

gonnahanvan8 12-13-2005 02:03 PM

I've had mine on order for 3 weeks. Driver Side
