Dang,.. My 2004 GT has this problem.. Every since I got it washed, i noticed water leak..

I would think mazda will cover this as a recall since there are so many of us with this exact problem!! Well, I rather not spend couple of hours going to the dealership to get it fixed.. so I'm going to do it tonight..

I never thought about spraying windex to get rid of water spots inside.. interesting.. I guess I'll give it a try..

Yeah, I just ran into this lovely little issue.....Stealership says since my warranty ran out last month, my only option is to buy an entire new tail light, they say $280. The worst part is that according to Mazda, this dealer is the best one anywhere close to me.

That sucks. You're in CO aren't you? I just went to a dealership yesterday and they replaced both of mine, no questions asked. I am still under warranty, though. I was surprised, they never even went out to look at it, just wrote up the service order, two new taillights, and I was out the door. They also noticed the trunk weatherstripping was deformed and ordered that as well.

wow must be nice to have a decent dealership like that. Mine basiclly said they didn't care swished some crap around in the taillight that left a white haze to it and sent me on my way. See how things go when I take it in for the center console not staying in place.

2007 1 month old

Wow. I am shocked to find this thread.
My RX8 is barely a few weeks old and I've noticed both front & rear and both driver's side and passenger side with minor condensation on all four of them..
Pretty astonishing... Anyhow, I will check with the dealer to see what they have to say..

Huey52 12-07-2007 09:20 AM

The center console runner thing is also a TSB. I got that repaired under warranty as well.

1 - tailight condensation (one rear)
2 - console runner
3 - hard start TSB (just a firmware upgrade)

That's all for me, but I may have them do the brake pad one in the Spring.

I've now got the aqua tail light mod. I went to the dealership and they're ordering parts.
Do you guys know if they're repairing the lights or if they're actually replacing them? (I've heard different stories)

Huey52 12-07-2007 09:48 AM

My tailight was replaced (vs. repaired). May of '06.

huzer21 12-07-2007 06:56 PM

Mine were both replaced, not repaired.

gomezrx8 12-19-2007 10:01 AM

i drilled 2 small holes on bottom side of taillights. no water accumulation since done.

if there is water inside, it will be replaced.

if no signs of water *yet* and the customer(us) has a concern(complain?), then the gasket will be replaced.

If you ask me I gotta say this is a pretty gay problem.

Ophitoxaemia 12-31-2007 06:37 PM

had the condensation, then half full of water. replaced under warranty a year or so ago. now its condensation again. out of warranty now.

i had drilled holes in the original ones to vent the water and may do so again.

anyone have mazda do anything when they went bad again out of warranty?

shaunv74 12-31-2007 07:19 PM

I say get yerself a goldfish.:)

ne0lain 12-31-2007 08:40 PM

I know its a little late for this thread... but mazda knows about this problem and does not have a fix for it... so all they will do is replace the lights until the warranty is out. Thats straight from mazda... from what it sound like to me is they really don't care about us. And I work for them.. gotta love that

Ophitoxaemia 01-01-2008 07:18 PM

thats pretty much what i expected- no warranty no luck.

anyone put a goldfish in their taillight before taking it to the dealer?

Mr.&Mrs.Magic 01-02-2008 09:40 AM

just bought an 05 gt from a dealer in atl noticed there was a lot of water in the tail lights they said it was normal and they could not do anything about it. I just figured on buying some aftermarkets but if the warranty covers this can i get the lights replaced even though i knew they had probs at time of purchase? Or should i just act like i had no idea and go to another dealer. hate lying but sometimes you have to especially when i got lied to.

BlackRX82006 01-02-2008 10:06 AM

I've haven't had this problem yet. But then again, I don't know why I would...I live in Phoenix. We supply the heat to hell...

Yeah just take it to another dealer and show them the problem. As long as the car is still under warranty, then you should get it fixed for free. Thats what they did for me, as well as many others.

ask them how can that be *normal*. Then go ahead and ask is it normal for you guys to be a moron ?

Run away from this dealer for your 8's lives. then GO to another dealer.

alphapenguin 01-02-2008 05:36 PM

i had condensation in my tail lights as well, told the dealer, changed them out no problems.

Redpit10 01-03-2008 12:40 AM

I fixed mine by cleaning the gasket and rubbing a thin layer of vasoline on the gasket. Has worked now condensation free for a little under a year. It could have adverse effects to the gasket over time, but it has bought me quite a bit of time so far.

Huey52 01-05-2008 02:02 PM

I always bring a paper copy of the pertinent TSB with me to the dealership. Absolutely no argument and I'm typically educating them (which I know is sad, but most car dealerships are like that).

SBZRO 01-05-2008 02:30 PM

This is my third time having to have my tail light replaced. The first time they did it. The second time I had to do it because the condensation made the tail light develop a crack and they said it was physical damage. Now its doing it again and they are asking for proof of purchase from a Mazda dealership before they can replace it again.

Mr.&Mrs.Magic 01-07-2008 01:28 PM

went to mazda to see if they could replace. Long story short they said no :banghead: so i drilled out the corners. I had almost 2 inches of standing water in the passenger light. Now my tails look new even after a good spraying. I was trying to get water in with no luck. Thanks for the info guys:)

lxlxlxl_saki_lxlxlxl 01-07-2008 01:32 PM

that sucks, they shoulda replace it for you. mine have been replaced 3 times already.

rotary magic 01-07-2008 07:48 PM

Jim Ellis (Peachtree Ind) replaced both of my tails and headlights. No problem.

Condensation in taillights

I just bought my used rx8, and noticed that both taillights get water in them, so far it s just been a small amount. Its in the shop today with 68k miles on it and they said they only replace them for free if its under 50k miles. I have a brake light out that i think may have been caused by this condensation. :(

Yup that's correct. Your bumper to bumper warranty is 5years/50Kmiles. AFter that I would find a junkyard and pull a used part or PM mazmart for pricing from them.

They will be cheaper than the dealer.

HiTMaNN 03-07-2008 08:26 PM

Why replace them? All I did was take them out get all the water out and then run a fan through them for an hour and they were all dry. I noticed there was a white residue still in them so I ran through some white vinegar in them and that took it all out. I then had to dry it again (I should have noticed it before I dried it the first time)

Here is the DIY for it

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-remove-replace-rear-combination-light-tail-light-114910/

But this is what I replaced and I have yet to get ANY water in them since I replaced the Gaskets

hitmann, how long have you had yours water free? I had my right light replaced in Decmeber and now my left one is getting water in it. I called the dealership and they said my warranty just ran out... I might do what you did with the gasket...

You guys DO realize that Mazda redesigned the tail light gasket to prevent this from happening, don't you? Here's the TSB: http://www.finishlineperformance.com...14-07-1795.pdf

The problem is that most, including me, already *got* the *redesigned* gasket but after a period of time, it still fogs.

The link of the Gasket I provided is the new design but some of us are out of warranty so we are unable to get the dealer to swap them.

Zoom 3X 03-09-2008 04:10 PM

tail lights

We just dealt with the driver's side tail light and it's moisture w/pooling. Now have to do the passengers side. They didn't happen at the same time. Took out the tail light, dried with a hair drier what we couldn't get with a paper towel and resealed. The driver's side is lookin' good. Now for the other side.

I am a second owner and don't qualify for warranty on my '04.

If there is a will, there is a way! Hope this helps for the rest of you.

Donna

hey everybody,i have the water tail-light issue going on as well.but my passenger tail-light is fogged w/water in it(it looks lika half-fish tank!)now,i bought my car from a used car dealership(an o4'rx-8,25k miles on motor)will mazda dealership cover this if warranty covers it only catch is,the used car dealership..appreciate it guys.

BlackRX82006 03-11-2008 05:00 PM

Well, you should call them and find out. And if they will not cover it, then you should find out how much a new taillight would cost. Or I believe there are better seals out there if you're a do-it-yourselfer type of guy.

It does not matter where you got your car from, as long as your Bumper to bumper warranty is still working. Call MNAO to check.

Riken 04-06-2008 04:15 PM

How about if it was replaced under warranty and now its out of warranty, are they responsible to fix it again?

Storm 04-15-2008 06:31 PM

I had the same problem on the driver's side. The dealer balked a little at replacing it as my 2004 was out of warranty, but they replaced it without a fight. There should never be water in the taillight, warranty or not. Insist that they replace it as the taillight assembly is a $200 item!
