Passenger side replaced under warranty a month ago; car has 40k miles on it. They also replaced both front headlights because of a film that was on the inside of the lenses.

Moordryd 07-12-2006 10:38 PM

Ole Spiff: how did they find out about the film? Was it part of a bulletin?

NavyDood 09-20-2006 08:54 AM

69,000 miles on our 04. Extended warranty will not cover it even though it's a known issue on the 04's.

Katchoo 09-21-2006 07:06 PM

Odd....I just had both tailights replaced under warranty. The service guy never even blinked...yep, you got water there (heavy on driver's side, very light on the other). Replace!

Second time for the driver's side.

Did you try approaching a different dealership? Nothing to lose.....

NavyDood 09-22-2006 08:38 AM

Katchoo. You are still under the Factory warranty.

We got the Total Care Mazda Extension Protection Plan. Terms and Conditions Sec E Para 8d states Brightmetal, sheetmetal, bumpers, oranamentation moldings, carpet, upholstery, paint, exhaust, brake drums, struts, shocks, battery, battery cables, lenses, light bulbs, sealed beams, glass, wheel covers, wheels, interior trim, throttle body assy, man clutch compnenets, weatherstripping.

What ticks me off is that it is a known issue and a TSB was sent out in 04 about the tail lights problem.

I could get them replaced for $600 and some change though if I wanted. :cussing:

XRX8X 09-22-2006 08:41 AM

:Eyecrazy: had both headlights replaced(wro)both tail lights replaced and the left rear drivers side taillight replaced for a second time due to condensation again(no trunk issues or bad fitting)
one good size bug in the right rear don't know how it got there but i'll let him ride there untill it fails to keep water or condensation out.got 33,ooo + no other problems so far but i think someone on thr forum said they are to redesign the rear tailamps or change there vender because of these issues hope the dealer takes care of the problem it's a defect not a fault! :spank:

charge him rent!

Tail light H2O

Mine is out of warranty. Removed the unit, applied silicone sealant to the seams, reinstalled and now no problems. 45 minutes of my time and no expense. (Already had silicone...house caulk) Avoided hours driving to the dealer, discussing with the dealer and waiting for it to be replaced.

Sometimes it takes more effort, money and time to get these things done thru the dealer.

XRX8X 09-23-2006 08:39 AM

i would charge the little bug rent but you know what they say about getting the bugs out ?
he most likely would take me to court and prove i made him/her homeless .ha ha!

ruru 09-23-2006 01:39 PM

my dealer said shinka tail lights were a bit different - not sure if that is true - saw people asking about that one page 3 I think - I had both fixed - the one with the trunk keyhole is having same issue again - worse this time - now I see it actually fill with water instead of just condensation - I am waiting on parts - will have recall done when they arrive...

khoney 09-23-2006 07:19 PM

Just found water in my passenger-side taillight, but it's no longer under warranty. Driver's side was replaced last summer under warranty. Things like this piss me off - known problem, but warranty expired.

SCiMMiA 09-26-2006 10:15 PM

The four year standard warranty doesn't apply to this?

Cool-Blue-Dad 10-04-2006 11:17 AM

It applies just fine - unless you exceed the mileage.

khoney, the extension to 60,000 miles doesn't help either, right? That extension is power-train only, not bumper-to-bumper, right?

rotary32 10-10-2006 12:10 AM

i have mosquitos and a lot of water in passanger side tail lite and also drivers side head light has conddensation while the passenger side headlite has a film lke something was spilled on the inside of the housing and dried. im taking it in to the dealer tmr and they said that they are just going to replace all of the light housings, no questions asked.

New Yorker 10-11-2006 05:33 PM

You realize, of course, that in France, Tail Light Water is considered a fine fragrance. Women like to splash it on before going out.

rotary32 10-11-2006 08:09 PM

i beilieve the phrase you are thinking is "toilet water"

New Yorker 10-11-2006 10:39 PM

Oops, you're right! Never mind.

NVMYGT 10-12-2006 07:35 AM

FYI...I just took my car in for the most recent recall and mentioned my tail light condensation. They called me back about 2 hours later to not only tell me that my car was ready to go, but also that they replaced 1 tail light and have the second one on order. SWEET!

P.S. If you have LED lights make sure they put the LEDs back in...I have to go back and pick them up.

El Kabong 10-21-2006 12:07 AM

Back in college when I had a Mazda 323 that collected water in the taillights, I just drilled a drainage hole.

Just a thought.

Way to re-post the link in the second post in this thread, from May 2005!

So it doesn't look like there's an official TSB for replacing the tail light assembly? That specific TSB is only for 2004 models that were damaged/cracked by using the wrong solvent, not from "general use".

Correct, nothing official like a TSB. Based on my dealership's quick acceptance of this as a problem, I would suspect there may be some form of technical note about this known RX-8 issue.

FYI, there is also another service bulletin called "INTERFERENCE BETWEEN TRUNK, REAR COMBINATION LAMPS AND/OR REAR BUMPER" that identifies yet another possible cause of damage to the tail light fixture.

blueballz 11-10-2006 10:12 AM

Got water in mine so i got pissed off with the dealer and they are throwing on a new one free of charge.........point take it to the dealer to replace it's a defect that stems from a wrong chemical put on light upon arrival to the us

I'm now at 82,000, have noticed a little condensation recently, but now there's a half-inch of H2O sloshing around the driver-side lens. Can I clean and reseal this or should I buy the new gasket from the dealer? This is now totally unacceptable.

Someone send me a DIY???

carbroke 12-13-2006 10:22 PM

hey... guys I found out today... that my 8have condensation on... driver side,, front.. head light...so.. pissed..
last time it was seated on passenger side.. rear lamp..but...now..on.. it seating on.. Front light.. god... I am going to call.. dealer tomorrow.. for replace...

rotor_man 12-14-2006 12:51 AM

rotrDoc, not sure on the headlight but i fixed my tail light with a new gasket. the new gasket was quite a bit thicker and made from a different material. If i was you i would buy the gasket as it is less stress in the long run. I spent ages trying to fix my tail light before getting the new gasket, now its all good!

honda_nos 12-14-2006 02:57 AM

I just had my left tail light replaced under warranty. It had heavy condensation.

In oct we had some rain here in vegas and noticed my passenger tail light had moisture in it. I decided to take pictures of it just in case. 2 weeks later I had my gf take my car in and had her tell them about the moisture but forgot the picture. well they didn't replace it at that time and said bring it to them when there is some and they will replace right away.

Fast forward to today this past monday it was pretty cool and a little humid and I noticed that both tail lights had moisture in them so I called them and asked if i could bring it in and show them and have them replaced well it was late afternoon so they said they couldn't fix it today and that they now had a sealling process for the lights :Eyecrazy: but to come by the next day and they would take care of it. well naturally I was concerned that the moisture would be gone by the next day and he said not to worry. well today I took it to have them looked at/replaced and took the attached picture with me.

well the good news is they replaced both lights brand new. bad news is the service guy is telling me that because the sirius ant wires are ran behind the light it is not getting a good seal. :Eyecrazy: Well the car was bought used and the sat ant was installed by the dealer in texas where the original owner bought the car. So I asked him if he could show me how the factory installs them and he told me they do the install onsite so I told him fine can I look at one that has the ant installed so I know how to move it? well he proceed to tell me he didn't know which ones had it and gave me a number to a guy that could rewire it for me

RedSheDevil 12-20-2006 06:47 PM

hey at least you got the tail lights replaced. i hear MNAO is cracking down on people bringing in pics cuz of fraud. my dealer didnt even have them in stock so i had to go there and show them one day then bring her back when the parts came in.

irix 12-20-2006 07:20 PM

my dealer wount replace mine.. i got a lake in there.... car imported from the us and they will only service cars from eu

RedSheDevil 12-20-2006 07:24 PM

^ wow, that sucks.

how much do you pay for an imported car? is it more than we pay here in the states?

irix 12-20-2006 07:30 PM

i payd 2.8mill icelandic krona wich is around 40.000 usd. a new car would have costed 55.000 usd. guess thats waaay more than you pay for a new car in the us..

maybe u can send a DIY? :)

those r not covered by warranty anymore might want to fix this issue without bringing to the dealer for a new tail/head light

i was also thinking if just using silicon would cover the leakage?

Im_crafty 01-03-2007 01:36 PM

Put me on the passenger taillight club. had to leave a message with the dealership about this. Hopefully they will call me back with good news...

rotor_man 01-03-2007 08:45 PM

Zero Rotary, i tried siliconing the old gasket with no success. It would be easy to try as it is not hard to remove the taillight just 3 10mm bolts from memory

msrecant 01-03-2007 09:07 PM

My understanding is that Mazda typically just replaces the unit. This implies the problem is something more than can be handled by some additional sealer.

Zero_Rotary 01-05-2007 06:55 AM

oh thats a bummer...tailights/headlight r just so damn expensive

MPG > HP 01-06-2007 02:19 PM

Just a "Character" Flaw

Same thing happened to my Aug. 03 build RX-8. Had both lenses replaced under warrantee. Then, after about a year and I'm out of warrantee, they fog up again. Obvious design flaw that will go down in history as a "character" flaw in the RX-8. Other than less than expected MPG (compared to previous higher final drive ratio RX's) and poor A/C, this is an otherwise excellent and flawless car! Nothing an ASFC won't solve.

msrecant 01-06-2007 06:54 PM

ASFC?

hurley_gurley_84 01-06-2007 07:18 PM

this is really common from what i hear... i am going thru the same problem and it is covered in your warranty so just take it to any mazda dealership and they will either replace the seals and the lights or they will order them for you and have you come back... mine will be here tuesday :)

Jissele

legokcen 01-06-2007 07:35 PM

Yup, I just took it into the dealership and they replaced the tail light under warrantee.

Tanaka826 01-06-2007 11:27 PM

same problem with my car. took it to the dealership and they repaired it within 4 hours.

nycgps 01-20-2007 10:42 PM

4 hours? wow. must be a really busy dealership since it took me like 5 minutes to take both lights out :)

Well, Lets see I think I think they replaced my lights ... 3 times. 2 times on the left and once on the right.

Well after maybe a year or so. Both of them starting to fog up .....

Im gonna bring it back to dealership .... not yet. too cold lately. maybe till MArch or so. (cuz I took it out and clean it. its better now)

foo77 01-20-2007 10:54 PM

they gonna change mine due to accident factor ;)

GhostRidr 01-22-2007 10:40 AM

I took mine in last week and they said the tail lights were on back order, that they were told it might be JUNE before they get any in? That sounds crazy. Anyone else being told this?

Dagious 01-22-2007 10:54 AM

Just got mine replaced today......

Dealer was great. One was really fogged up and the other was not. He ordered both.....
