Some people have run a few cans of engine cleaner and cleared out some of the carbon and improved the compression. How often have you changed your plugs and air filter? Enjoy your rebuilt engine and keep us informed...THANKS....

Air filter was replace at 18k. 2 plugs were changed due to recall in July (28K miles); other 2 looked good according to the mechanic at that time.

I would recommend red-lining the engine a lot more (keep the engine near the red line under load up a hill is best)after you get it broken in. That helps keep the engine from building up so much carbon and locking seals in place so they cant move. All so run some cans of engine cleaner a few times a year. There are a few that remove carbon in the engine, look for them. The MIAC(Marble In A Can) sound is loud and you will hear mostly on hot days using reg-87 fuel. It is very bad for a rotary so if you hear it make sure you put mid or prem fuel in quickly.

I never heard the MIAC sound. I usually keep the radio down enough that I can hear the engine as I love the sound of it revving plus the beep at 8.5K.
Thank you for your advice on future preventative maintenance. I will certainly work harder to keep this new (rebuilt) engine from crapping out. Now just to start reading the 40+ pages of the premixing thread...

This is my seventh rotary and I just waited till the oil is near the low mark and have the oil and filter changed at that time. Most on here change the oil by 3K and that is my feeling too. Most dealers want 25-35 dollars, it's cheap insurance. There is a good chance if you ran a few cans of engine cleaner and then started pre-mix it would keep going for a while. Of course a rebuilt engine is sweet.

If I had my oil changed every time the oil was at the low mark I would have been changing my oil and filter every 1.5K miles.

It shouldnt burn that much oil, at least if it was topped off perfectly on last oil change.

I checked my oil yesterday and it was a bit lower than 1/2 mark. Time for some Castrol 0w30 baby ! (Tomorrow )

Just drove mine back from Dallas after getting the engine replaced there. Went there to see a concert and had problems, took it to the nearest dealership and they told me I needed a engine. '04 just pasted 29,000 miles on it. Dealership was great about it. Got me a rental CX-7, which I didn't like at all, but it got me back to Amarillo and back there yesterday. Almost forgot what it was like to drive like then it was new!

Yeah the dealer here has been pretty good although they keep pushing out when it will be finished. I ended up with a Magnum for a rental too which I though would be cool until I started driving it. Compared to the RX8 the Magnum is very disappointing. I just can't wait to get back in my car.
As for oil I would wait until the oil level got to the low mark and then add a full quart of 5W20 Castrol. That would take it almost exactly back to the full mark. I would do this every 1.5K miles. After reading some of the other threads I will probably add a half quart every time the oil level is at 1/2 on the dip stick just to make sure the level stays high.

1.5K is about right for a quart of oil. It really depends on how hard you drive it. I could burn a quart in a day during track driving.

There is 1.8qt between the two marks on the dip stick. It is not important to keep toping it up. Just wait till it's past half way down or near the low mark , then add a quart. The car holds about seven quarts so when you change it you are really just adding about four quarts to the three old ones. Thats why it's good to change it more often.

You can get more out by jacking up the passenger side first, open the drain plug, let it flow, then jack the driver side up ... you can get 5 qts out at least

Finally got my car back with the new (reman) engine. Here is what the tech wrote down on the report.
"Replaced engine due to rotor 1 misfire and high oil consumption."
Not too helpful.

They also replaced the battery and starter on TSB 01-048/06

I took her out for a good run tonight. She starts better than I can ever remember; on the first crank, even cold. Got in some good highway and city driving and I have no complaints. It was so good to be back in the 8.

BTW anyone know if there is a break in time for a re-manufactured engine? I was not told to break it in when I picked it up.

You hear both ways. Personaly I would do the standard factory break in as in the manual.

The Racingbeat guys say 1K miles. You can check it on their website. I wasn't able to wait that long.

Wow. Do tell how you managed to get that covered.

Also I thought I'd add that based on changes to the '09's Mazda is recognizing an oil injection coverage problem. They have added a third injection port and re-designed the MOP. Too bad we're not getting rebuilds with the '09 configuration.

I just did my first premix with MMO, I really hopes it helps! But, love the feel of the new engine, runs great and I'm doing more RPM's, I do all in-town driving, so this go around, going to redline it more often.

So is it truly a rebuilt engine we are getting or is a new one?

I was told that it will be a brand new engine....

Well.. the reason why it was covered was because of the statement that mazda issued regarding engine failures and even if it was past warranty, that it would still be covered.

Good to know. Most folks are getting rebuilds. Either way new or rebuild the first update we've seen to the motor was in the '09 model not in our rebuilds otherwise we'd have seen them in the '07's and '08's new right?

Where is the statement you are talking about?
