I swear, people just need to listen to the customer sometimes when they know a thing or two about their car.
i got myself a free rental after going into the dealer ship 3 times for the same issues and all 3 times i said fuel pump, finally at the 3rd time i figured out how to make it happen, and they paid for a day of rental for me. they don't really listen, but they will definitely fix stuff a lot faster if u can reproduce symptoms for them on command.

A day of rental? I thought Mazda always reimburses the dealership for rentals if they're working on something covered by the warranty. I've been without my car for 6 weeks for an engine replacement, and I've had a rental the whole time, for which the dealership/Mazda is paying.

This afternoon I will be picking up my car with engine #3. I'm really hoping that it works okay this time.

That's cool, though. Well, aside from the dealership rashing your rim (that's utter bullsheet).

At least your motor core is good to go. Plus, you now have many warranted miles left with the latest extension to 100k.

The third time seems to be a charm. I got my car back from the dealership on Wednesday afternoon after 6 long weeks, and so far it's running great. No hard starts, no lack of power in hot/humid conditions, no stalling at idle. I'm even thinking about holding on to the car now that they've extended the engine warranty.

I will be a new member soon.. Car was new last fall.. just over 4000 miles.. Sucked in water off a flooded street.. Remind me not to let my significant other drive the car when I am on the road.. Car was parked on hi ground so I walked to it and attempted a restart.

First thing I noted was two tails of water out the tail pipes - then several quarts of oil under the car.

I don't imagine warranty will cover this debacle! Suggestions please for a new short-block??

Thanks - 09 for the suggestion

Dealer is overwhelmed with flooded cars -- My needs are not as great as others so I think Ill just let this issue rest for a few days - let things calm down - then ask the dealer if they will cover anything. My home owners insurance may pick up on this if I let the dealer R/R.

Waiting for dry roads!

Easy to get dealer to change engine?

Well guys:

last week, got the dreaded misfire...lost power, CEL blinking, etc. Over the weekend, discovered the news here on the extended warranty, though I'm still barely within the first warranty extension (I'm at 30k mi, delivered in Aug 03 on an '04 6MT..and I was a presale customer so hopefully they'll be nice to me!).

Took it to a local shop with rotary expertise today. They said...misfire on #2, can temporary fix it with new plugs, running ATF inside engine, but the apex seal is likely gone. They said go to dealer. Gave me several tech printouts from mechanics network/database.

So...how easy has it been for folks to get Mazda to replace the engine? Somehow, I'm expecting it to be quite difficult, based on what I've read here...lots of fixing this or that, but not really getting it right..and fighting you every step of the way.

I'm sure many on this forum are far more experienced than me...so what are the magic words to get them to replace it? I'm sure with the new 100k warranty, they know there's a problem, so will they fight me?

All help is appreciated...

All service on this car has been done at the dealership except this one visit to my local garage. Recall the 04's got the free service deal due to the "engine hp snafu", so I just took it to the dealer for everything.

You should not have a problem....if you have a problem that the warranty covers

I'm part of the new engine club now, engine got approved today by Mazda, getting it put in early July.

Towards the end of the winter (around 60K), noticed a drop in gas mileage. At around 65K, compared my RX-8 against a friend's and noticed that the low end was significantly lacking. Took it in to the dealer to have the cat checked, cat was OK. Later, around 68K while doing some other maintenance, dealer noticed lack of power and also noticed some oil seeping out around a spark plug (not sure how that's related, but dealer mentioned it anyways).

Performed compression check at 68K and found compression to be low, @ 270 RPM, about 7.0 for most chambers, with 6.9 in one of them. Performed decarb, did not improve compression or power. Had to wait to get the tool from Mazda to do the intake vacuum check, put on about 1K miles in between. At 69K, compression readings were 7.0 6.8 6.7 and 7.2 7.0 5.8 (that one chamber really going downhill). Dealer took the required intake vacuum test tool voltage readings and today Mazda approved the new engine.

Compression at 55K was good.

I do a lot of highway cruising. I had the original "emissions" recall done at 30K or so, so that's 30K miles of "damaging" highway cruising. Though engine checked OK with all the tests. The idle did seem more stumbly, but I also had the engine mounts replaced at 35K. Now we have MSP16 adding more oil for cruising; perhaps Mazda did not fix the insufficient oil problem in its entirety?

I know that one of the techs mentioned that engines with good compression still come back with bad intake vacuum readings. Perhaps at 55K my engine had a problem, but the compression was still reading good?

Anyways, my dealer has been excellent in working with me on the problem and I'm very happy that the engine is being replaced. I can't wait for full power to be back.

I just got home a couple hours ago with a new engine in my car. It only took them 2 weeks to order and install the new engine.

The first engine was already dieing at the 30K mile mark, and the new engine was installed at the 34,400 mile mark.

I bought the car used with 25K miles HOPING that my engine would die and I would get a new. I don't care about it going to lower the resale value of the car as I plan on driving it until it dies. And now, I just got a chance to start with a brand new engine, so it will be a very long time until this car dies.

I am going to order premix and the dealership that installed my engine said that they have no problems putting in 10W30 oil whenever I get an oil change. They said screw C.A.F.E.

Dropped my car off today. will be getting rid of the original engine now, at 86,000 miles. bought the car last summer with 68K and changed the plugs. Got a reflash a month ago, but still had hard starting, so they said bring it back for comp. test.

2 weeks ago got a severe misfire on rotor 1 as I was just leaving work (I am a tech at a toyota dealer). So I dropped it off across the street at Mazda that night. Next morning it was running fine, so I picked up new coils. Car ran fine again with the new coils, but no improvements on idle quality, gas mileage, or power. So, last week they did the comp test and also said my plugs were horrible (only 15K on them).

Should have my car back with the new engine on Wed. or Thurs.

I'm also trying to get the tech to get me info on this new replacement engine. He says something about teflon coated rotors and some other updates. I am very unshure about this so i am trying to get printed Mazda info on this new replacement engine and the new 09' engine changes.

Count me in ....... just got mine back from mazda. I had 82000 miles on my 04. Started running ruff, low idle. They did a couple of reflashes and what not, but finally replaced it. When i got the car back, my steering wheel was off to the left about a half a inch. I took it back and they fixed it...to much. It now sits quater of a inch to the right. I go back on monday to have the final ( i hope) adjustment made....but at least I have a new engine and it runs like a champ.

What a horrible week it's been.....check this out

For the past 4 weeks I've seen my CEL light flashing as I'm driving to work at speeds like 65-80 miles or more. Now my car has about 67,000 miles and I bought my rx8 with 55,000 miles on it. So of course I bring the car to Mazda hoping it was something simple. Low and behold I find out the error is the infamous misfire code I've reading about on the other threads lately. The mazda tech guy performed some tests on my car for 5 days straight. He calls me back saying I will need new coils, some other parts, and a new engine! I'm scratching my head like crap how I'm gonna afford this $5,000 bill on such short notice. At this point I felt like a real a$$hole when I didn't extend my warranty for $2,700 at time when I purchased the car. The following week I called the Mazda Tech to ask him for a better option.....like there was any! He mentioned to me that he spoke with Mazda Headquarters last friday and managed to get an approval on the engine! I'm like oohh $$$hit God is really looking out for me! My cost only is $535 which covers for the new spark plugs, wires, coils, and latest battery for my car. Once he said that man I had the biggest Kool Aid smile like hell yeah I'm getting my baby back...baby back...baby back.... ribs with barbecue sauce. Before I hung up the phone he explained to me that there's been a major recall on these old model rotary engines. However, the funny thing was this engine was already replaced when the warranty was active. So by next week my car will be going through it's third engine.

What a lucky ending it's been for me

Glad it worked out and they are treating you right. Not good to hear that this is engine number 3 though. Most folks that have burned through more than 1 engine had a bad reman out of the box. I hope that's what your case was rather than the real problem not being fixed.

Had my new engine ordered on 07-25-08. I have an 05 MT with 41376 miles, Mazdaspeed intake, exhaust and flywheel. Was going down the highway at about 65mph and it detonated, backfired twice and I had to limp it to the dealership. The tech told me it had lost compression on the rear rotor. It must have leaned out (I'm guessing) because the inside of the exhaust tips were chalk white instead of the usual carbon black. I had the vehicle in at the beginning of June for power loss and CEL isues and they replaced the cat and reflashed the ECU. So now I'm in a rental until I get to pick the car up. This is my first replacement engine. So far al they have had to do in it's history is replace 2 transmissions, the cat, now the engine, and the misc recalls and reflashes.

Got my new engine 3 weeks ago. Something went wrong though - lost 2 of three A/C compressor mounting bolts and 3rd ready to go. In the shop now awaiting new bolts. They'd better not try to charge me to fix their tech's install screwup or a faulty block with stripped threads. She was just fine before the re-eng.

I'm getting my new engine put in this week. Check out my Sig for details. I may be the first person on this forum to have a new engine put in before I even ever own the car.

jesus this is a lot of engine failures
maybe mazda ought to check with the guy building the skycar--he seems to have found some stuff that works for him. He uses rotory engines in his car/plane thing.

It's the high RPM that makes it reliable. Plus how cool the engine is in a plane.

No catastrophic failures. Just premature wear. I suspect airplane users have to tear down and rebuild on a more frequent schedule so it's not as much of an issue. That and they run their own PCM and tuning so they can tune the oil injection themselves.
