smoking greddy turbo :(
im using the greddy turbo.when i installed the kit i noticed the car smoking at idle intrermidetly.ive had the kit on the car for maybe around 4 months.the smoking hasnt been as bad as it has been in the past week.its not only smoking during idle but also when im driving now.when the car is in boost it doesnt smoke.my turbo didnt come with the oil return fitting that bolts to the oil pan.i have a greddy oil pan that i installed when i did the turbo.i made an oil return fitting out of a few diffrent brass fittings from a hydraulic supply store.i couldnt find a spline fitting that was metric and greddy wouldnt sell me just that so i used a few pieces and :mad:a 90 that has an id of maybe 1/4 inch and has a tight bend.its kinda choked down but its at the level of the oil pan so i didnt think it would cause a problem.is it possible the oil isnt propely draining from the turbo? or is it more likely the seals in the turbo are blown and im doomed to end uprebuilding the turbo? i am currently waiting for my cobb access port which will be here on wed i belive.im using crap emange as of now.not sure if tuning is a reson for smoking like this.ugh..i dont want to rebuild my turbo right now and getting to the manifold and turbo isnt fun on jack stands

if my seals were bad wouldnt i notice any performance loss? my oil return line really isnt restrictive.it has a tight bend 90 but its bellow the oil level so its not really slowing down the flow rate.at least i wouldnt think.out of the 90 i have a threaded spline fitting.then its braided rubber hose that goes straight to the oil return outlet on the turbo.its just so much work to pull the exhaust mani off to check for oil and after all the various other investments ive made into the car money is tight.i really cant afford a rebuild already im hoping for an easy fix.im also running catless.im wondering if i throw the cat back on if it will make any sort of diffrence.my car is my baby.having it smoking is embarrassing and it makes me fall to my knees and cry.plus every homeless guy that was a mechanic and every retard on the streets has to tell me im smoking and that its my head gasket.its driving me crazy

there was no oil restricter supplied with the greddy turbo.when i 1st installed the kit it smoked at idle periodically.now its every time im idling.it was bad enough that i was pulled over today.im gonna try the easy thing and see if i can find a better oil return fitting tommorow.for whatever reason its been quite a task trying to find a metric spline fitting.they have a varity at the hydraulic supply store but not the size i required.it took me a couple fittings to get to a spline which is why i used the 90.im thinking it could be possible that the oil is starting to coak on the turbo worse which is causing the increase in smoke? maybe it built up over time and is why its much worse now? i dont know but a turbo rebuild isnt in my budget right now.i have the cobb access port being delivered on thursday and hope i can get this worked out by then

It didn't come with a restrictor because Greddy are useless . How many people telling you that it must have one does it take for it to sink in ?
Read this thread !

Fitting one now may well be akin to shutting the door after the horse has bolted however .

Going to a local shop today to get the .047 inch nozzle.I'm hoping it will be cool.my Cobb is being delivered tomorrow. I'm hoping my turbo will be in good working condition for the beginning of my tuning process

when i had my 8 turbo'ed with the GReddy kit it smoked after a couple months of daily driving. realized i needed a restrictor, but by then my seals were shot. bought a turbo rebuild kit off of ebay and rebuilt the turbo myself. never had the problem after that.
like the guys said above, you need a restrictor, but you'll probably have to rebuild the turbo too.
