Running rich...

Hey guys,
I can't help but too think my car is running rich. For one, it seems to be using more fuel than it normally does. Secondly, there's a much stronger petrol smell when the car is sitting there idling and it doesn't seem to perform like it used to. Lastly, the car seems to run much better when it's cold, like early morning or late night.
I've recently had the plugs and plug leads changed...and apparently the ignition coils were checked and seemed ok.
Any recommendations?

Cheers, Daniel

im not sure i bought the car with 83,000km on the clock and now its got 100,000km...they could possibly be the original coils.
Could back ignition coils lead to running rich?

Cheers, Daniel

^Yes.
Could also be a clogged or damaged cat converter, because of the bad plugs/coils...

Also disconnect the battery for 15 minutes.
Hit the brake pedal a few times to drain all the juice.

Reconnect.

Clean MAF.

Start car drive 5 miles. Turn off drive another 5 miles and the ECU will re-learn the fuel trims.

My 8 has similar symptoms, but oddly enough, I'm getting better gas mileage and performance.

Original engine from when I bought it with 23,000 miles, now at 147,000+.

Changed plugs and wires most recently in March, replaced bad cat and coils in June.

I disconnected the battery when I replaced the coils, and pulled the room fuse to reset the fuel trims.

I smell a strong fuel odor when I'm idling at a traffic light or stop sign, but not when driving.

I was getting about 240 miles per tankful of gas before the new coils, and now I'm getting 260 plus.

Should I try resetting the fuel trims again? It runs better than it has in a long time, and I'm afraid to screw that up by changing anything.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

He's talking about an engine that's healthier than yours perhaps.

I was getting on average around 230 miles to the light. With my new coils plugs wires.

I got my engine replaced under warranty last week. They kept my same new coils plugs and wires that are about 15k old. Now on my first 2 tank fillups im getting 270 miles and 267 miles.

I must say that I still didnt go above 4k rpm but still the difference is HUGE. Tomorrow, I will change my plugs wires and coils again since im running a new engine. I dont like to keep old things on newer ones.

Now my rx8 is getting about the same mileage as my old mitsubishi lancer ralliart.

Im guessing the difference is caused by the engine being newer requires less power for the same task than an engine with lower compression?
