Weird clicking/rattling sound
I've been searching the threads but none of what I've found sounds like what I'm hearing. I noticed a weird rattly/clicking sound, almost like an old sewing machine noise. I couldn't tell exactly where it was eminating from but it seems to be towards the front of the engine. Could it be a loose belt? The sound wasn't there this morning but I noticed it when I left work tonight so it seems to have come on all of a sudden. It's most noticeable at low speed and idle. I can't hear it when I rev but I don't know if the sound goes away or I just can't hear it over the high rpm.

Extraordinary Engineering
Is a valve in the intake manifold controlling the secondary intake runners
Activation depends on RPM and load
Control is through a electro-pnematic valve switching vacuum to a pneumatic actuator
Jon316G posted debugging videos about this system

It's entirely possible to do it yourself. The part is almost $250 new, and expect to spend at least $250-$300 if you want it done by someone else. Note that, the valve might also just be stuck open or shut, and a good cleaning may return it to normal.
Also note, if you choose to replace it or repair it, you might need a new thermostat housing gasket, which isn't listed as a required part on the official repair bulletin.
As a final note, you might get flamed for not searching because this problem is very common and, once diagnosed, you have a wealth of documentation available to read.
Cheers.

^....for the record and I think it's pointed out in Jon's thread..................it can also just be the solenoid itself correct? I think a couple of folks have had it be that and not the valve itself.

I took it to the dealer today and they confirmed it was the SSV. They quoted me $788 parts and labor. Funny thing is, now it's not making that sound and seems to be back to normal. Could the mechanic have unstuck it and might be alright now or should I just have it done? I would love to save some money but I think the job is beyond my skill level not to mention the time it would take.
