FWIW, I had spoken to one of the regional field service reps from Mazda who runs quite a bit of their technicians' training, and he suggested 5-20 in the colder months, and switching to 5-30 in the summer, especially if I was going to do any track type events.
I run GTX 5-30 & 5-20 in the middle of winter. I dont know if this is the best to run, but I figure the Mazda guy has to know something.
Make your own decision based on what you can find/read up on, and just dont let the dealer know if its not 5-20 in case it breaks :0

We have seen time and time again, RX8 owners who follow the manual and Mazda's recommendation just to have their engines die early. Good example is a thread made from a UK owner who had under 50k miles and used 5w20/30 all the time. When they opened up his engine, they found excessive wear that could have been prevented by a heavier weight oil.
Ask your dad's friend this, How come ONLY in the U.S is 5w20 oil recommended? How come heavier weight oils are recommended in the rest of the world, even those with similar climates to U.S regions?
Edit: I bet the "Technician trainings" do not or very briefly touch upon rotary engines.

5w20/30 is what the dealer will tell you you need to use. After many blown rotary engines, tear downs and rebuilds, some of the very knowledgeable members on this board will never use a 5w20 or 5w30 oil and swear by heavier oils like 0w40, 10w40, 10w50 and even 20w50(NYC's fav) followed with premixing or the sohn adapter.
Bottom line, it is your car, do what you want. Seeing that everyone who follows the manual's "recommendations" gets rewarded with blown engines, I will be using a heavier oil.

I am trying to avoid to get into these oil BS question. Let me just say this.
**** 5w20

I have seen the inside of one engine running RP, it looked worse than my Dino lubed one.
I admit seeing only one does not make a trend, but has anyone else looked at the inside of the front cover of an RP lubed engine?

Did the owner only use RP and not switch to RP later in its life?
