FWIW, I had spoken to one of the regional field service reps from Mazda who runs quite a bit of their technicians' training, and he suggested 5-20 in the colder months, and switching to 5-30 in the summer, especially if I was going to do any track type events.

I run GTX 5-30 & 5-20 in the middle of winter. I dont know if this is the best to run, but I figure the Mazda guy has to know something.

Make your own decision based on what you can find/read up on, and just dont let the dealer know if its not 5-20 in case it breaks :0

^ Mazda guy tells people what Mazda Corp pays him to. For him to tell you to do something that is not Mazda recommended would be unlikely.

The guy is a good friend of my Dad's (also a FSE), and he was pretty up front about everything, so Id trust him on that

Good friend or not, 1) Is he a rotary engineer 2) He is on Mazda's payroll

We have seen time and time again, RX8 owners who follow the manual and Mazda's recommendation just to have their engines die early. Good example is a thread made from a UK owner who had under 50k miles and used 5w20/30 all the time. When they opened up his engine, they found excessive wear that could have been prevented by a heavier weight oil.

Ask your dad's friend this, How come ONLY in the U.S is 5w20 oil recommended? How come heavier weight oils are recommended in the rest of the world, even those with similar climates to U.S regions?

Edit: I bet the "Technician trainings" do not or very briefly touch upon rotary engines.

I love the smell of Royal Purple in the morning. You know, one time we drove for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked around the car We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' oil drop. The smell, you know that gasoline / oil smell, the whole parking lot Smelled like.. VICTORY!!. Someday this war's with the pistons is gonna end...

On a serious note you can buy stuff that makes your car smell better.

Bottom line, it is your car, do what you want. Seeing that everyone who follows the manual's "recommendations" gets rewarded with blown engines, I will be using a heavier oil.
Did someone just mention my name????

I am trying to avoid to get into these oil BS question. Let me just say this.

**** 5w20

The End

I have seen the inside of one engine running RP, it looked worse than my Dino lubed one.
I admit seeing only one does not make a trend, but has anyone else looked at the inside of the front cover of an RP lubed engine?

Where's my gun?
I suddenly feel the urge to put a bullet in my head and flop around on the floor like a mullet out of water.

Was it a rotary engine?

Did the owner only use RP and not switch to RP later in its life?
