Well two bits of follow up... first, the part that none of you care about but I care a ton about... I got final approval for financing, so I am offically a rotary owner again!

Secondly, I called the dealership and asked what the build date on my vehicle was. The one slated for me was on 04 model, but now I have an april 05 set aside for me ( identical cars otherwise, and only 4km on the tac ). However the dealer says they are waiting for the flash. Does this make sense? The dealer is in Canada... how are updates distributed? I would have assumed that something like this would be distributed electronically... at least for efficencies sake. Am I wrong here? Are the updates actually snail mailed or couriered out?

Sorry to be a pain in the ***, but after that test drive ( and dropping the cash involved ), damn I just cant wait to have my vehicle. The dealer said "within a week" for the update, does that sound reasonable, or is that a crock of bs?

They should be on 38.5 as of today. They all share the same web site for the flashes.

tanks fer teh welcome I wil do my bst not to spel better than u! I owned a 2nd gen rx7 before and loved it then. The rx8 made my ole rx7 look like a beater. Cant wait to take delivery.

zoom44:
Thanks for the update. That makes the sales guys comments seem much more plausible, which means I may actually get my baby within a few days. Woot! Are there any Canadians on this board that can verifiy that Canadian dealers actually wait for physical media?

sorry i was mistaken. they may just be a little slower at updating but they get the updates from the same site as US dealers. some individual US dealers have been known to wait for the Major disc which is just bad bad bad. there are explanations about this update procedure on here and mazda6tech.com. search "wds update" or "major" and "minor in my posts

clydejmuggs:

When you say "as of today" do you mean literally, it was released today, or that they should have it already? Sorry... being paranoid and impatient!

zoom44:

I read a great many of those earlier posts, I was just hoping to confirm or not confirm if the dealer was lying to me. Car salesguys... hard to trust. I was more interested in procedure then the actual implementation. Trust is, the update itself doesnt sound that important to me, at least during the breakin period. Kinda irritating I cant drive it off the lot, then come back later to get it fixed. I just dont want to be stuck waiting to august to pick up my car... especially when im trying to decide when to put my existing ( and beat to death ) mx6 up for sale.

I've had my car since Nov. 04. and I haven't had it reflashed ever, had a minor problem once or twice a month after I got the car it died while coming to a stop, then it never happend again. I have a midpipe and no other engine mods, and no problems at all with anything ever.

I wanted to ask, if Mazda lowers the cat temps, well don't cats like heat, isn't that what they work on? I may be wrong so please correct me if I am. But, if they lower the temps, what affect will that have on the performance of the car?

Can I read what you said as " If they are telling you they are waiting on the flash, they are full of ****?" Paraphrasing of course What sort of timeframe did 38.5 get released in. Did it literally just happen so I should cut the sales guy some slack? Or am I being BSed?

BTW... damn this board answers fast, im bloody impressed.

Zoom44:

Is this wds 38.3 the "R" flash for 2004 models or am I mixing apples and oranges with the 2004/2005 models?

i think WDS is the diagnostic and network system that the dealer uses to flash. So the higher the version the more likely it is that it includes newer flashes and TSB's

Hard disc's are "Majors" floppy/net downloads are "minors"

38.0 (major) has been at the US dealers since late June early July. 38.3 was first week of July and 38.5 came out today. The minors are downloaded to the WDS via floppy from the Mz website.

So I read the whole thread and am still confused about one point. By 'idle at high rpm', does that mean

1) throttling so that in neutral/clutch-in at standstill, rpms are around 3krpm or higher? like say showing off at a stoplight

or

2) idling with no throttle, maybe with A/C. RPM's are at whatever the ECU wants, usually 8-900 rpm, but includes those occasional revs to 1.2k that we used to worry about but have all come to know and love. or anywhere within that rev range.

?

Also, which dealers in Las Vegas were visited by Mazda Japan technicians, and is that the same dealer that had the 13 engine failures/28 other failures?

Zaku, I asked the same question earlier in the thread and didn't get a clear answer. It all depends on your definition of the term "Idle". If your car is not moving and is in neutral (or is in gear but the clutch is fully depressed), "idling" (to me, at least) is whatever RPMs the engine is doing without any input from the accerator pedal. If you're giving it gas, that's not "idling" -- that's REVVING.

So if Mazda defines "idle" the same way, "idling at high RPM" means the PCM/ECU is selecting a higher than normal idle speed for some reason -- such as to run an AC compressor. If that is in fact the situation that leads to this heat buildup issue, deliberately revving the motor while not moving would, presumably, only make matters worse.

Or -- "Idle at high RPM" is Janglish for revving in neutral; things do get lost in translation sometimes.

The "E" and "F" flash is out for the Group 2 cars...like yours. I believe this will also be for Group 1 cars too.....I'm awaiting clarification. All Group 2 cars are 05's, but not all 05's are Group 2. 05's built in 2004 are Group 1. It makes no sense to have a different flash for different model years.

We'll see.

Well hopefully I will find out tomorrow when my car is at the dealer. I have printed off the recall and I hope that I can get it done and get some clarification for all of you. As soon as I know I will post!

New buyer from Toronto

I Purchased the car nearly 2 weeks ago and will get it this Thur, damn. Dealer told me da car need some update for the interior not the engine. I told the sale rep can i get the car first then bring it in later for the update and he told me Mazda didnt allow to do that until they came to fix it. It too late coz i have signed contract. Nothing i can do. Hope the car will be fine. A lil **** when u found out there would be some problems in ur new car.

Correct me if I'm wrong, the recall that we are talking about only includes procedures for Group 2 cars. If your car falls within the Group 1 range, then there is no procedure as of yet. The dealer is instructed to HOLD group 1 cars, not Group 2 cars.

In addition, most if not all dealerships do not have new gas tanks to replace damaged tanks, etc. So, taking your car in now, would seem silly. Since, I am most likely going to get saddled with a crap loaner car....so I will hold out at long as it takes for the dealer to get parts stocked, and MNAO to provide a procedure for Group 1 cars.

Has anybody recently taken their car in for any maintenance and had it HELD yet? I have an a appointment for this coming Friday to fix some stuff and an oil change but I’m a little concerned that they won’t give it back.

Just brought mine in yesterday to rotate/balance the tires. They did not take it hostage.
