2004-

Cat Fell apart 300 miles in, dealer replaced
Glove box broke when I kneed it on accident
Broken center console when I leaned on it
plugs/coils/etc
O2 sensor
Rear tail-light fixed with silicone
Coolant sensor (damn that light!)
Broke front-left end-link (self fixed)
Blew out right rear strut
Radio skips badly on anything but the smoothest of pavement
Rattle in my dash...driver side. Could be that airbag TSB now that I think about it.

Try Mazmart or just inquire within your dealership.

Items replaced:
  1. Both visors (twice)
  2. 3 Batteries (two killed by alternator before it was figured out)
  3. Both tail lights (drivers side twice) Gasket issue not a light issue, fixed with RTV
  4. ABS Module (fried by overcharging alternator)
  5. Alternator (overcharged fried many things)
  6. Starter (killed by alternator)
  7. Drivers side window switch (killed by alternator or hell of a coincidence)
  8. Head unit
  9. Shift Boot
  10. Seats (drivers side worn thru the rest were ok)
  11. Air Pump (not replaced)
  12. Cat Converter (replaced by dealer, then sold for midpipe)
  13. Center AC vents (side to side switch broke)
  14. Ash tray (spring popped out on lid)
  15. Drivers side HID ballast (took light apart and replaced ballast)
  16. Fogs lights (pitted and cracked from years of highway driving)
  17. radiator (WP belt broke caused to overheat and crack nipple at over 100,000 miles)
  18. water pump pulley (bolts sheared off )
  19. dome light (killed by alternator or hell of a coincidence)
  20. Rear sway bar end links (boots were cracked)
  21. center console lid (needs to be replaced again)
  22. Gas tank (saddle pump problem, replaced whole tank)
  23. Temp control **** (cracked)
  24. Fan control **** (cracked)
  25. Door latch (wore out, spring broke, locked me in)
  26. EPS wiring harness
  27. oil injectors (clogged)
  28. OMP lines (brittle and broke)

A lot of the parts also replaced are normal wear and tear, some are just from road hazards and extreme operating temps. Currently my transmission is going out and I need to replace my power steering rack (new issues that are intermittent). I have replaced a lot but the car has only left me stranded twice (when gas tank failed and alternator went crazy) in all these years. Some of the issues could have been avoided, like the tail lights, alternator overcharge, etc.
where did you get the ballast for the oem HIDs? My driver's side HID sometimes it doesn't want to come on, I suspect that the ballast might need replacing. also, where is it located?

Driver side door lock striker spring(not actuator) - Jerry-rigged.

Passenger side auxilary (small) bulb next to the high beam - replaced.
Bumping this thread!

Picked up the RX-8 earlier after getting the MAZDA remanufactured engine installed, I finally had the coolant reservoir(expansion tank, as they called it) replaced instead of leaving it unplugged like the last 20 months and new SAMCO silicone hoses in place of the original factory coolant hoses. The driver side seat warmer stopped working and I think the air solenoid valve will be next... P2259 CEL pops up once in a while.

2004 MT: In 3 years of ownership:

1. Coils twice
2. On my 3rd bose head unit
3. Heater control ****
4. Battery
5. Horn
6. Cat converter
7. Solenoid intake valves
8. Motor replaced under warranty (water pump, flywheel)
9. Passenger side tailight. Moisture came back so I drilled them
10. Cat converter again. Replaced with midpipe
11. Parking lights are going coocoo. Not going to replace them. Once stays on high beam the other one doesnt light. Must be a short circuit somewhere.
12. 4 shocks
13. rear end links
14. Starter motor
15. Complete manifold intake
16. Faulty fuel line (dealer`s fault)
17. Rear o2 sensor

This car is pretty expensive to maintain I must admit, but im in love with it and ill put up with the cost. In 3 years of ownership on my mitsubishi lancer ralliart, I put in 0$ in repairs. Only oil changes, tires and brakes. I must say huge difference!

The rx8 is exactly like a high maintenance girlfriend. She looks good, she's very picky, has to be taken out in fancy places, she rapes your wallet but in the end you are rewarded with great pleasure

long live the 8!

2004 MT - Owned it about 2 years - At 98,000 miles:

1. Passenger Sun Visor
2. Seat Warmer Light
3. Undertray
4. Rear O2 Sensor
5. Dome Light
6. Tail Lights(full of water)
7. Neutral Switch(P0850 code as of yesterday. Thought it was finally the cat code I have been waiting for.)

Otherwise it has been a good car. Less problems than the Audi I just sold. 100 miles in a week has been a lot for it during my ownership, though.

Thank you all for your information..I will collate it all soon.

I have a question for those who have actually replaced their Glove Box (Compartment) Damper or plastic Absorber thingy..

Now there are two listed by Mazda, one for Left hand drive and Right hand drive RX-8's...OK.

The new replacement Damper spare part comes as a ONE PIECE, But is actually made up from two separate units which can 'un-click'.
1. One is a Bracket with a plastic split pin to click into round Damper unit .
2. The other piece is the round Damper itself, which actually has a R and on the other side a L stamped into the plastic.

See the Pic of a brand new RHD replacement part which I have separated..

So my question is what part of your RX-8 Glove Box Damper thingy has actually broken or busted and needed renewing.

Please be specific, thank you..

My driver's side window regulator failed on me (I have a thread here somewhere with pics). I am still unsure on the cause of the failure. The only cause I can think of is slamming the door too hard. That is the only problem I've had that is out of the norm.

Edit: mileage is 62k

only thing that has broken on me is the.......middle AC vent.. passenger side.. there is this black plastic piece that hooks into all of the fins so that when you move one, they all move. Mine got detached somehow and now only one of the blades move. I havnt had time to remove the vents to get my hand behind there and re attach it.

Fell out at about 33k miles.

2008 Rx8, now at 36k miles.

2011 RX8 R3, 10,000 mile/ 10 month inspection.

Here a list of everything I found..
1) Alignment out of specification, (toe). Caster and camber are within spec.
2) right front tire 1/4 oz. out of balance, that equates to four ounces at 80 mph.
3)roof rain gutter trim fitment, creaks when cold, Loose clips.
4) Driver side window guide rubber distorting
5)
6) CD player pause button will not stop play back of a CD. Not functioning at all.
7) Microphone for blue tooth defective.
8) Windshield has manufacturing flaws, two of which are in the line of sight.
9) The plastic guides for center console fall off.
10)Driver side side skirt missing fastening clips,

gawd some of these lists are really scary looking.

Trying to think of something that I had to replace due to defect / disfunction /etc...

hmm...

I broke the inside cabin air filter snap on cover when I replaced the inside cabin air filter a few years back. I just stuck it back in and let vacuum take care of it... although I did recently buy a replacement one and just haven't gotten around to installing it.

Rubber tonque on my parking brake cover. Annoying as hell and next to impossible to find a replacement cover.

Hairline crack on my HVAC defrost button. Thought I had this solved a couple months ago but the deal fell thru.

Leaking tails -- had to replace the driver's side light due to the chrome paint chipping off -- uber gasket and silicon to the rescue.

knocks on wood ... apparently I've been lucky.

04 GT 55k miles:

- Hairline HVAC defrost button crack (can't notice it for the most part)
- Driver side visors (fixed)
- Leaking taillight gaskets (fixed no drilling)
- Broken glove box dampener
- Snapped/fixed bolt for e-shaft position sensor (possibly my fault for not using PB Blaster)

That's about it. Who said 04's and rotaries aren't reliable?

For me it's the ring on the dampener that the "nipple" of the glove box clicks into. I tried driving two holes and using a steel wire to act as a ring, but that didn't work out too well

I posted in the defective/broken sunvisor thread about this. On 8th gen civics, they had a similar splitting problem. Similarly poor design. Honda issued a recall for most 8th gen Civics to have them replaced. We are talking about a sub $20,000 econocar here! Where's Mazda with our recall?

mine is a 2005. about to turn 98,000miles.

its had an engine (original went 97,000miles)
three converters
engine mounts (replaced with the engine)
clutch (91k, probably worn out, but didn't fix the clutch pedal :facepalm
coils (91k, didn't fix the compression)
front brake pads
floor mats
glovebox damper
the alternator belt (it went 97,000miles! ac belt is still the original)
three tail lights
and one key

it needs rear pads (they are original), the coolant bottle, and maybe a wheel sensor or two.

except for the converters that's not too bad, if this list was backwards IE what maintenance work did you do, the list is pretty short. its nothing but oil changes until 90k

Aside from normal automotive consumables and maintenance items: 0 .

In 61,000 miles, nothing has broken, worn-out, or otherwise failed. I love this car.

The top coolant return tube that connects to the reservior. I started to smell burnt coolant fluid and noticed a drop of level this past week. No drips noticeable probably because it evaporated or burns finally popped the hood and noticed steam and smell coming from behind the battery box.

Shift boot (for cosmetic reasons, replaced with a redlinegood one, real leather)
Overflow tank. Plastic became brittle and cracked after a few Phoenix summers. Big mess!
Both sun visors, became detached from the roof mount (stupid expensive too).
Both exhaust guards, the black plastic was becoming less black, more gray in the Phoenix sun.
Front driver's side forward wheel well liner/splash guard. Tore off on the highway.
