Wink What Broke, Busted, Leaked or Worn out on your RX-8?

OK,

My plan here in this thread is to eventually compile a listing of all OEM Mazda Parts that YOU have replaced on your RX-8 over the past near decade of our cars life and motoring pleasure.

What I was thinking to compile a concise List of these parts with Mazda Part Numbers, so we have an easy future reference.

Now, we all know of the two obvious being a renewed RENESIS Engine, and Coils, so lets keep these out for now, but anything else is in.

So please tell me what you have renewed in your RX-8 since being the owner and we can see how this idea of mine goes...plus tell me your year and model RX-8.

Also lets keep out service items like Oils, Filters,Spark Plugs and Wear and Tear items like Tires.

Please do not include Collision's or parts that were damaged by another party.

Thought it would be cool to update this as it's about a year later since I posted.

'04 Rx-8 86,500 miles:

Passenger sunvisor
Driver's sunvisor
Clutch
Clutch Pedal Bracket
Gauge Cluster
3 Rims (From Pot holes)
Sun Roof Motor
Struts
Springs
Trunk Seat Backs
Battery Cover
Bumper Bracket
Lower Control Arm
Ac Control Unit
Passenger Dashboard Cover
Oil Crank Shaft
Bose 6 Disk Changer
Faceplate w/ screen
Keyfob (ended up getting switchblade key)
6port Engine (manual) lasted to 82,210
Cat Converter
SSV

I ended up selling the car and purchased an '07.
6,000 miles later and I've never had a single issue with the car, not even a coolant light sensor. *knocks on wood*

LMK if you need any help sorting things out

september '05 rx8, 36000km.
3 transmissions, 1 clutch\clutch pedal. All the rest is indestructible imho.

Wear items don't count when you track the car so tyres, brakes spark plugs etc will be left out of this post.

I would like to be helpful here, but other than scheduled maintenance, nothing has needed replacement.

I love this car...

I've had a couple RX-8s. One a early 2004 that was in the shop once a month for the first year and a half I owned it. Would surely have continued had I not totalled it. The replacement 2006 has fared a lot better, but has still been back to Mazda a half dozen times since purchase.

The 2004 had 4 PCM upgrades, 9 TSBs, 1 tech note, and 4 recalls performed on it:

Tech Support Bulletins:
04-001/06 SQUEAL NOISE FROM FRONT BRAKES DURING BRAKING
01-004/05 ENGINE CRANKS NO START
07-003/03 TEMPERATURE CONTROL DIAL AND / OR FAN CONTROL DIAL BREAK OR COME OFF
01-013/04 LOW OIL LEVEL WARNING LIGHT COMES ON WHEN LEVEL IS NOT LOW
01-001/04 ENGINE COVER GROMMETS MISSING
02-002/04 SNAPPING NOISE WHEN TURNING AT LOW SPEED - 18" WHEELS
07-002/04 A/C AIR TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATION AND / OR LACK OF COOLING
08-004/04 DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG RATTLE

Tech Notes:
FRONT CUP HOLDER / CENTER CONSOLE BECOMES HOT
(2004 RX8 Starting S/N 00000000 Ending S/N 40113124 )

Recalls:
2004-2005 RX-8 Thermal Damage Recall
2004 RX-8 Front Lower Arm Ball Joint Recall Owner Letter
2004 M/T Dynamic Damper Heat Shield Replacement Recall
2004 RX-8 Front Passenger-Side Airbag Recalls 1604B-a and 1604B-b

on the 2006 the following warranty work has been completed:

MSP16 Recall; PCM Reprogram to N3M5-18-881K
Replaced Fuel Filler Cap per TSB No: 01-026/07
Replaced Passenger-side Sun Visor
Replaced Driver-side Sun Visor
Replaced Passenger-side Rear Combination Light
4206F Recall; PCM Reprogram

drilled my taillights due to condensation
really thats it for what was requested per Ash--rest are wear items. I replaced a lot of stuff not because the oem parts failed, but because I wanted too.

2004 MT 53,000 miles
Passenger tail light gasket, worked for a couple months, moisture is back
Drivers side tail light is starting to get condensation, will drill holes soon.

Other than that, nothing. I plan on replacing the fuel pump around 100k, along with the overflow bottle cap.

it's funny that people keep talking about LS conversion saying how reliable it is and a lot more power blah blah blah. but then you never hear them ever again. and later u see the car listed on ebay saying it runs great and stuff, but the truth is it never run quite right and things breaks left & right.

and not just about Rx-8, it happens to every other god damn car that has gone thru "LS conversion"

there were a few successful stories, but again in a year or 2 you see the car listed on ebay and ends up at the same fate again.

2005 MT, 4 years exactly as of this edit, drove it 83,002 of the 89,602 it has

Replaced due to failure (excluding maintenance items)
- Temperature control **** (22,000 miles)
- 1 Taillight (30,000 miles)
- Catalytic Converter (52,000 miles)
- Front O2 sensor (53,000 miles, from cat failure)
- Starter (64,000 miles)
- Rear Shocks (87,000 miles)
- Clutch bearing (89,000 miles)

And no, visors shouldn't be on the obvious list. Too many of us still have the original ones just fine.

car was built in July of 2003. Currently has 126,000 miles on it, lived it's whole life in south Texas. Saw all highway mileage for the first 74,000 miles of it's life driving me 80-100 miles a day.

Items replaced:
  1. Both visors (twice)
  2. 3 Batteries (two killed by alternator before it was figured out)
  3. Both tail lights (drivers side twice) Gasket issue not a light issue, fixed with RTV
  4. ABS Module (fried by overcharging alternator)
  5. Alternator (overcharged fried many things)
  6. Starter (killed by alternator)
  7. Drivers side window switch (killed by alternator or hell of a coincidence)
  8. Head unit
  9. Shift Boot
  10. Seats (drivers side worn thru the rest were ok)
  11. Air Pump (not replaced)
  12. Cat Converter (replaced by dealer, then sold for midpipe)
  13. Center AC vents (side to side switch broke)
  14. Ash tray (spring popped out on lid)
  15. Drivers side HID ballast (took light apart and replaced ballast)
  16. Fogs lights (pitted and cracked from years of highway driving)
  17. radiator (WP belt broke caused to overheat and crack nipple at over 100,000 miles)
  18. water pump pulley (bolts sheared off )
  19. dome light (killed by alternator or hell of a coincidence)
  20. Rear sway bar end links (boots were cracked)
  21. center console lid (needs to be replaced again)
  22. Gas tank (saddle pump problem, replaced whole tank)
  23. Temp control **** (cracked)
  24. Fan control **** (cracked)
  25. Door latch (wore out, spring broke, locked me in)
  26. EPS wiring harness
  27. oil injectors (clogged)
  28. OMP lines (brittle and broke)

A lot of the parts also replaced are normal wear and tear, some are just from road hazards and extreme operating temps. Currently my transmission is going out and I need to replace my power steering rack (new issues that are intermittent). I have replaced a lot but the car has only left me stranded twice (when gas tank failed and alternator went crazy) in all these years. Some of the issues could have been avoided, like the tail lights, alternator overcharge, etc.

tl;dr

late 04 build 05. I've had it for a little over 2 years.

1. T-stat housing gasket leaked.
2. Radiator hoses.
3. Arm rest button.
4. Ashtray Spring.

Things I replaced because i broke them or upgraded.
1. Water Pump with a remedy unit.
2. Radiator. Broke the nipple off when doing the hoses. Oops.
Everything else, i would just consider general upkeep and maintenance.

2004 GT @ 50,000 miles

Confirmed busts:

- Driver side visor (self fixed)
- E-shaft position sensor bolt rusted into mount and snapped (fixed)
- Tail lights had leaks in the gaskets (fixed with silicon)
- E-brake handle plastic cosmetic tongue inside of console snapped (no biggy)
- Might need to replace an end-link or two in the rear

That's it. Who said 2004's aren't reliable?
