The Genuine 09 filter does not have a curled spring as a valve ( I call it a Valve, but is it really just a small spring), it has a flat spring plate about an inch wide and sits across the top of the can in the same spot as ayrton's spring pic.
If you want a Pic I will get one?
This is the 09 filter cut open, but does not show the 'valve'..

Okay guys yesterday I headed back up to my parents (700 miles since Thursday) again but it was sunny and traffic was heavy so I was driving pretty hard so a lot of the these temps are higher because they were following some hard driving. Overall I am pretty happy with how it performs. I really want the AP but what are some other option out there for data logging?

9k,
Performance design (http://www.performancedesign.com.au/products.html) offers a tuning software/hardware suite for around $1k (ouch), or a info/logging package for ~$100. I wish someone would work on OpenPort/EcuFlash support.

Pretty good mate, still looks a bit low where the Oil Temp gets up to 'normal' 206F..
Remember at 212F and 3000 RPM for S1 the factory says 50.8 you are getting much better numbers...the S2 is 72.5 PSI.
So, really you could probably go for the By Pass and Valve Mod?, what do you think, or can you find improvements with your Oil Hoses and length?
Yours is really pretty good though, I am not sure about the mod for you??, if you had the Original 2 Oil Coolers I would say definately...
What oil are you using again 9K?

I am running Mobil1 0W-40. I think for the RPM's the pressures are okay. It's just hard to note data when I am at those high RPM's. . A lot of this data is taken when I slow down so the temps are still up. I really need a real data logging solution.
I can definitely improve the lines and setup a bit. When I get the time I will shorten the lines and relocate the oil thermostat.

I would like to see your 3000 RPM PSI on an HOT Engine over 210 F...
As far as Data Logging, I know my OBD+Key reader/logger is very good, but Mazda don't monitor OP through their PCM...well I don't think they do???
Have you got a small hand tape recorder (forgot what you call them), you could call out the numbers as you drive???

Yeah I will try and do some logging when we do our next "run" through the hill country. The one thing I did notice tonight driving back (I wasn't noting readings) is that when I would hit pockets of traffic and weave my way through (drive like an F1 driver) I would get the temps up to 200 pretty easy but as soon as speed increased the temps dropped back down within seconds. The cooler really works, I can't wait to get on the track.
Also, my idea was heavily supported and influenced by another member (think turbo) here who likes to keep things on the down low so I will not mention his name. But I am sure his oil cooler setup is awesome (I have not seen it either). Also, Hoss-05 was my sounding board for much of this and he has some interesting ideas as well that may lead to bigger and better things. I also could not have don it without Grungepup.

This is interesting

"NEW - RX-8 Oil Cooler Hose Set
The stock RX-8 oil lines are well-designed for maximum efficiency with regards to routing their way down to the oil coolers, but the numerous connections in these lines also pose potential areas of concern when subjected to long-term use or high performance applications. Racing Beat's Oil Hose Set eliminates much of the complexity of the stock lines and simplifies the routing while minimizing the number of required connections.

It's actually not a bad price either...the fittings and the hose, and labor to make this stuff isn't cheap
The fittings to the coolers and block aren't shown in there picture
With the hose protectors and hose and fittings to DIY you are buying about $360 worth of parts......and spending a lot of time designing and fighting with the hose ends......Ask me how I know

Been there...got the T-shirt
I think I have spent over $1k on those damn fittings
Between the oil coolers, oil relocate/accusump, fuel system, and the meth setup there are a lot of those little suckers
And I have the SS slivers in my fingers to prove it .............
