I'd like to hear more about why he recommends 10w-40. Im no rotary expert, but clearances are set for a certain weight oil so I'd like more clarification on this.

Oh, and the pics

Clearances is what I'm wondering about as well. This topic was talked about a few years ago and "experts" were using the argument to support 5W20 as opposed to other weights people were suggesting.

Now people are reversing their position.

Is simple.

Someone start using nothing but Xw40 weight oil, come back in 2 yrs and let ppl know if their engine blew already.

I be that person, I dont mind

Let me make sure I understand this.

Premix and heavier-weight oil wasn't even started on this engine until around 70,000 miles?

The real story is that it lasted to 70K without any special lubrication steps taken.

The premix and heavier oil MIGHT have contributed to a life beyond 70K, but if it lasted that long in the first place, who's to say it wouldn't have made it without it?
Clearly, everything worked just right on this engine. The OMP worked flawlessly, perhaps delivering a tad more than it was supposed to.

I'd be thrilled just to get to 70K on my engine with no major issues. Since I started premixing at 4K, maybe I can better that mark.

Still a noteworthy achievement, expo.

Notice is that his engine still works, he change it out simply because it was leaking , but ONLY if he pushes it (like track, autox)

The question should be, if he started with heavier oil + premix, will his engine last even longer.

^^I agree. This engine actually demonstrates that premix and oils other than 5x-20 are not essential. It's still an open question, on this evidence at least.

Numbers are better than pix

Before anybody starts to get all excited aboiut seeing pictures I wanted to add my opinion that pictures aren't as able to convey the amount of wear an engine has nearly as much as tolerance measurements are. When I tore down my own engine and discovered my apexes to be wobbling in the rotor tips(at 49,540 miles), RG and I were a bit surprised to find that the rest of the engine had 8%, or less, wear on it based on the measurements I took using my micrometers. For example;

1) Main bearing clearances were .0022-.0028". Spec is .0022-.0029".
2) Rotor bearing clearances were .0021-.0025". Spec is .0024-.0030".
3) Rotor housing variance was .0002 and .0005". Spec is .0024" max.
4) Rotor housing clearance was .0049" on front and rear. Spec is .0020-.0074"

There are several other measurements that we take when assessing the wear on a Renesis but I am sure you guys get the point.

Further, since having my PCM loaded with the latest flash from Mazda I have opined that pre-mixing may not be necessary any more.

And some more. There seems to have been oil from more than one location but possibly most of it may have been from a metering pump o ring.

Paul.

Yes, Paul sent a OEM flywheel on the rebuilt. I however had a ACT on mine and moved it over to the new motor.

Only looks a little juicy around that front exhaust port. Otherwise, the engine is surprisingly clean for 100K+ miles...or are the fotos post-cleaning? Thanks for posting those fotos, PT.
