I marked the reservoir for the SOHN so I will take a picture when I get home to show you how much has been used in a week. My car has always drank a lot of oil with all three engines but from what I know that is supposedly a good thing but I am on my third motor, haha.

so after sooooooo much reading, i've concluded the following for the longest living rx8 (mods wise):
sohn adapter with idemitsu premix (2-stroke)
premix with 6 oz idemitsu premix (2-stroke) and 2 oz seafoam
0w40 royal purple for winters, 10w40 for summers
oil catch can

i don't think i'm missing anything am i? i'm going to red line everyday (for the car and for me) and seafoam every oil change at 3-4k.

 

I don't think I'll waste my money on expensive premix. Feel free to post up product data sheets for others as well. Check out the data.

I've been premixing (legend zx-2sr) as it is the same oil I use in my 2cycle rotary snowmobile.
I have not read too much about Legend in this very lengthly thread.
I run 5w20 dino and am happy with the synthetic infused minearal Legend brand.
I think it is a good idea to premix, I have had a couple indepth conversations at the local airport that I deliver to. They swear by it.

 

I looked it up and personally I wouldn't run anything from a place that does offer a product data sheet. They say it meets or exceeds spec but offer up no data.

 

When my Idemitsu supply runs out (which is prolly still a year hence) I may switch to Redline 2-cycle, simply because I use their stuff with confidence in tranny and diff'l.

 

Legend, from Traverse City, Mi. I have used it for my old artic cat panther snowmobile for 16 or so years, (sachs rotary engine) The oil used to be called PRODUMAX, i believe. I have run the legend zx-2sr in my 94rx7 when I had that. I bought my rx8 two months ago and have been adding it from day one, or 53000kms. It smells better than full synth 2T. I hadn't realised how many people don't do it. It's not really that much more expensive and you are usually checking the oil, or other fluids when you are filling up, I just reuse a injector cleaner container and keep it with my oil in the trunk.
The sohn adapter is prime. I am just so damn used to premixing.

Yeah if you have used it then that should be proof enough for you, I'm just curious what it's viscosity numbers are.

 

Wait, people are using seafoam with their premix for every fillup? Are you sure you didn't mean MMO or FP Plus?

 

There is a lot of experimenting going on.

 

IMO most Rx8 owners who premix spend way too much on top of the line stuff .
Cheap motorcycle premix is all you should need .

 

Heck, a case of Idemitsu lasts me two years or more, why go cheap?

Yeah, but really, seafoam run with premix all the time? Seems like seafoam is too harsh to be run every tank, and it also seems like it would negate the premix - like every time that the premix oil is adhering to the surface creating a protective oil film, the seafoam is there to strip it right back off.

I say stick to premix w/ a lubricious cleaner (non-solvent), and run seafoam or bg44k only on occasion, as a mild decarb between real decarbs.

I agree. Seafoam would be fine to run as a means of cleaning your engine but to do it all the time would seriously hinder the performance of any pre-mix.

He clearly mentions every oil change (though I still find that unnecessary) its not every fill up.

Have to agree running "ANY" 2 Stroke to lubricate Apex Seals as a pre-mix and then also using Seafoam regularly does not make sense, one is 'Lubricating' and the other is "Cleaning Agreesively"...leave out the SF

 

3.5 oz of Idemitsu per tankful as the Pro's at MazMart now recommend for a daily driver after numerous engine rebuilds.

I don't drive my '8 much in the Winter, hence my supply longevity.

I suppose you can't go wrong if your OMP is fully functioning . I can't see that amount doing a lot though .

 

That's interesting. After reading through this very long thread shortly after buying my 09 in March, I decided to go with 4-5 oz. Idemitsu per full tank of gas. My feeling is that at least with the Series II it's really not necessary, but that it can't hurt the engine (and certainly may help). I decided to stop using Idemitsu a couple of tanks before garaging the car for winter to eliminate most of the Idemitsu sitting in the gas tank for four months. I go through Idemitsu slowly, especially since my RX-8 is my recreational vehicle, not my daily driver. I only used two quarts all year long from when I started using it around May through October. It seems silly for me to buy an entire case when I'll only use 3 qt. at most in a year.

 

I have the MazdaManiac CobbAP tune and it ups the OMP output a little as well, as did the Mazda flash awhile back.

I used to go 4 -5 oz prior to MazMart's recommendation this year.
