Lube Control-LC60: Clean burn, smooth, no soot at exhaust ends & better gas mileage for me.

 

Merged the latest three threads on premixing, so some of it may be a bit dis-jointed, however it is in chronological order.

I hope this focuses the various opinions and information on the subject.

One thing that really stands out for me in these threads, is the number of individual owners who already felt the rotary needed "better' lubrication before they had ever heard of others premixing.....

I plan on using 4 oz of royal purple syn 2stroke oil + 2 oz of FP60 per tank.

just bought 10 Aluminum Bottle 8oz w/ White Cap and 5 Aluminum Slimline Bottle 120ml (4oz) w/ Wht Cap, total was $11.90

That way I can fill up a bunch of bottles and be done for a month+ before I mess with them again.

 

So, I'm confused. I bought a quart of Castrol Super Outboard oil, pictured in the first post, but here in the thread, someone says to avoid TCW-3 rated oils, which this oil is.

Is the Castrol Super Outboard oil useable for premix or not??

Yioou can but I think some people thought that it ywouldn't burn as clean. I'm using Lucas. I've hade a couple of boats and the plugs always seemed to foul up every couple of months and my mechanic said that the 2 stroke oil has a tendency to foul up plugs and exhausts. I could be wrong but it's what he said.

 

some oils may cause problems/failure of emission control equipment such as catalytic converters because they are not intended for such vehicles

 

Thanks, that part I understand. But in the first page of the thread, listed under "good oils" is this castrol. So is it just that originally guys thought it was good, and we've now decided it isn't? Or what?

I wanted to buy the Lucas UCL, but couldn't find it at pep boys.

Would anyone car to post a summary of the current list of oils the community _recommends_ for use as pre-mix oil?

i have been pre mixing for a good while--I would be ok with any FULL synthetic pre mix oil at no highter ratio than 1/2 oz per gal. The Quicksilver outboard premix oil someone mentioned at Walmart is OK--they have 2--use the full SYNTHETIC one and interestingly enough it is purple in color. A good bottle to use is the Lucas topcylinder bottle. it is marked off in oz's and has a resealable cap and it holds enough to last a while. I use a bottle of techron about every 4-5K miles.

Reading your posts it sounds like you know a lot about this, so I value your input. Problem is, what do you mean by full synthetic, or more importantly, how do I tell? The castrol super outboard is priced like a synthetic but it doesn't say it is.

Also, a number of the oils mentioned on the thread have different marketing strategies; i.e., they dont say they are synthetic or not, not all say 2-cycle. Some say marine, etc etc. I know that if I was into boating I'd know the difference, but I dont.

I'm running out of this tank of fuel and I'd like to dump some of that castrol into my next tank. But if its not a particularly good choice, I'd just as soon return it first.

Oh, and by the way, I usually change my oil after a bottle of techron to clean out the injectors and dump the garbage - this is what you mean, right? Or do you normally premix with a little techron?

 

I prefer Synthetic oil. but it doesnt really matter when it comes to premix. Idemitsu sells Synthetic Blend Rotary Premix. Its working fine. Actually one of the best for Rotary. (I think)

 

IMHO, Lube Control FP60 is what most people should use as their gas additive or "premix" if you will - has superb cleaning with additional lubricity that everyone seems to be seeking by premixing - supports both needs.

If you need better lubrication than that, use the Sohn adapter and Idemitsu/Protek R.


Mod feedback - I have been running my "formula" (FP60 in the gas and Idemitsu through the OMP with the Sohn adapter) for about 700 miles now, and I have to say that my 8 is running noticeably stronger and quieter, with possibly a slight MPG bump. I would highly recommend.

 

what quantities are you mixing? I was planning on doing 2 oz fp60, 4 oz 2stroke oil

 

FP60 recommends continuous dose of 1oz per 5 gallons. I use 4 oz per fill-up (12 gallons) for a ratio 1 oz to 3 gallons in my 8. I use the higher ratio for the better cleaning and lubrication needs of a rotary compared to a typical piston engine. I use the recommended dose in my other 2 vehicles with great results as well.

I do not supplement with Idemitsu in the gas - I use Idemitsu as my oil source through the OMP via the Sohn adapter at the computer controlled rate.

If I did not have the Sohn adapter, I would run just FP60 at the same rate as I am currently doing - I think that is all that is necessary with the OMP provided lubrication (independent of OMP oil used - sump or separate oil supply).

If you have Idemitsu or other 2-cycle and want to use it up with FP60, I would do 3 oz of each per fill-up (12 gallons) until I used up my premix stash, then go back to 4oz per fill-up of FP60 ongoing.

 

yeah.. I just don't want to dilute my octane rating more than I have to. 4 oz per fillup seems fairly standard (with omp enabled).

 

I do not think FP60 lowers your octane much, if any, like a 2-cycle does. But going 2oz each would be a safe bet.

 

the pre mix oils I like is
1- Maxima K2--full synthetic motorcyle racing pre mix
2- BelRay Mc1 full synthetic
3- the easiest to get is the Quicksilver Full synthetic at Walmart.
They all say full synthetic on the bottle. TC W oils are not full synthetic.
It is my understanding that any non synthetic based pre mix oil has a certain amount of Phosphorus in it and this phosphorus is what will cause damage to the cat. This can happen slowly. Even Amsoil says not to use it's non full synthetic pre mix in an engine that has a cat. I KNOW synthetic is Ok to use. I would even go out on a limb to say that I would be cautious on using the Idemitsu(spelling) as it is a blend. A lot of people swear by it but I wont use it. It was designed for racing rotaries and they dont have cats. Again why chance it?
On the use of "cleaners" --using them too much can actually be harmful according to some car gurus I know. Every 4-5K is enough. I am not an expert in that regard.
The omp with our pcm programing does not provide enough lubrication for ANYTHING other than "old lady" driving.
Premix is great insurance, cool looking at the pump, conversation starter and relativly inexpensive. JUST DO IT!

I am using Lucas Upper Cylinder Lube (3oz/10gal) plus Home Depot full synthetic 2-stroke oil 2oz/10gal, now on my second tank with this mix. There is less smoke on cold starts, less soot on tghe tailpipe, and the car feels stronger.

I may actually drop the oil altogether and use just the Lucas UCL to see if it makes any difference.

 

1. For some cleaners it is true - many strong solvent cleaners like BG44k, Techron, etc, etc. all work well but are not for everyday use (at least not at the full bottle dosage). These solvent-based cleaners [mostly with PEA (PolyEtherAmine)] can cause excess wear with too frequent use as they can cause oil barrier breakdown during use.

Others, like FP60, use different chemistries (not solvent-based, but near-ester based) and are designed to be used in every tank as they lubricate as well as clean and are not only safe, but advantageous in every tank use.

So, you have a choice - let the deposits build up and use an "occasional" cleaner to try and get it clean every so often - or - use something that gets it clean and keeps it that way all the time. I prefer the second as the engine always runs at it's peak performance and efficiency.

2. Not true, just the opposite. The "old" flash was known for lubricating plenty under high RPM, but was lacking a little at low RPMs running ("old lady"driving).

The latest flash, corrects this issue and provides more oil/lubrication at lower RPMs and pretty much leaves the high RPM alone. So, once you have the latest flash done, you should have plenty of oil being provided via the OMP unless you have and FI engine.

the bottom line is a lot of owners are doing different things, who is right and who is wrong remains to be seen ...

 

could not find lucas UCL or FP60 here so bought a bottle of Morey's UCL/injector cleaner .
according to the bottle it claims similar benefits to FP60 . anyone know anything about it ?

My thoughts were to use a UCL/cleaner for everyday use & switch to premix whenever I go to the track.
