i already have at length- we live in the same town

i know the Sohn won't fix the problem, but it will allow me to view oil consumption more accuretly. And besides, I intent on making it work like it should anyways, and a Sohn with tank is a good idea in the first place.

Just wanted to confirm that my fuel pump filter was gunked up - I was premixing with 2 stroke royal purple and fp60 (4 oz rp, 2 oz fp60 per tank, sometimes just 4 oz of fp60). I can't say if the fp60 was an innocent by stander or if it helped contribute to the problem... either way fp60 it didn't work enough to clean the fuel filter enough to fix it.

I can also confirm a friend with a rx8 had the exact same issue with a clogged fuel filter - he was premixing heavily (to the tune of 100:1) with protek-r.

One thing that is interesting to point out - I had mentioned in the past the default map for the int-x was too lean for my car. It had to be re tuned to inject more fuel. It's possible the pump was starting to clog back then and retuning to add more fuel only temporally removed the problem. Later I found that boosting over 7,000 rpm when the tank was under 1/4 full would result in the system going lean... which is why for the last few months I always refill at 1/4 tank.

Today the filter was replaced and I could boost under 1/4th tank at 9 psi without issue. Also the int-x map had to be leaned since it was too rich.

I really hate to stop premixing, but given the amount of problems we're seeing, I think I have no choice as a fuel pump stopping at 7k rpm while under boost = boom. I'd like to at least keep using fp60, but since I can't glance at the fuel filter and see how it's doing, I am not sure if that is a good idea either.

Are you still burning oil from the sump the same as before fitting turbo ?

what are you asking?

I'm not burning any oil since I have the sohn mod. just checked... just over 2000 miles since the last oil change, and the level is at the full mark still

Just wondered if you had looked at the thread where MM was finding he was not using any oil .
Can't imagine why you would want to premix if you have the sohn adaptor ......

my omp is working, I've added about 3 quarts of oil to the washer fluid bottle so far...

I premix even with the sohn mod because I want more oil injected than the omp provides. The sohn doesn't modify the quantity, just the quality.

In the interests of getting to the bottom of this I would consider letting someone with experience pull my fuel pump to check for gunk. How big a job is that? I have premixed only with Lucas UCL for all 4000 miles on the car, never 2 stroke oil. I have some FP-Plus coming in the mail that I plan on switching to soon though.

Someone should check a non 2 stroke oil premix car. Hopefully we'd be able to find a safe product.

the problem I have is that even if I premix with just fp60 from now on, I can't be sure if any issues I encounter are from fp60 since there might be residue in the fuel tank from previous ... my gas tank wasn't dropped and cleaned.

When you pull the fuel filter is it possible to clean it or does it need to be replaced once gunked?

Make sure to read this thread on OMP functions and possible ways in increase OMP oil flow - may reduce the need for premixing:

I am not affiliated with the seller in anyway but just wanted to share an ebay find that would work nicely as an oil can for use with the Sohn adapter. I just bought an 04 and planning on doing this mod asap. Oh yeah, 1st post... Woot!

Here is my 2 cents. I premixed on the way to SC and back just the long highway parts. I wanted to see if it gave me better MPG, on the way there i got about 23mpg and high 200 miles out of the tank and on the way back i cracked over 300 before the low fuel light even came on. I did fill up all the way so i dont know exactly what my mpg was but i think i got another 30 miles better than the premixed tank there. I got an oil change he day before that might have helped and i was going 74ish on the highway both ways so that helps a little too. But the last time i wen to sc with no premix all i could get was about 230 before i had to fill up, so another 70 miles out of the tank seems like a noticeable difference.

Probably can't attribute all that gain to premix as travel direction can make a big difference (wind at tail versus wind at back and more uphill versus downhill) - I regularly notice 2 mpg differences on my common trips based on direction.

However, most who premix do see 1-2 mpg gains due to better combustion chamber sealing and more lubricity/less friction.

Home Depot sells a 2-cycle oil by Ryobi (Homelite), which claims to be full synthetic and meet the JASO/C and ISO EGD standards. It's called "Exact Mix".

The 16-oz size has a convenient feature -- a chamber at the top which you fill by squeezing the bottle. Full chamber is 2.6 oz. This seems ideal. 2 doses should do a full tank nicely. 1 shot before pumping, and one at the halfway point to get good mixing between the 1 sizes of the fuel tank.

And, if I run across a better oil, I think I'll still hang on to this bottle.

What if I'm running the new flash?(N flash I believe.) Which supposedly injects more oil at higher rpms? Should I still premix for track use? ill be at the drag/autocross a lot after I get the mazsport type1 in. Also I've heard to put pure water into the radiator? Wouldn't coolant be better to keep it from boiling too hot(though pure water does cool down faster... your constantly at wot on the track. So I'm confused.) Od, teamrx8, rg, all autocrossers.... can you confirm?

This may be a repost but in case it's not:

Racing Beat Tech Tips on oil cooling and lubrication:
"While undertaking development work on the RX-8 Renesis engine for SCCA T2/T3 use, we decided to introduce extra oil into the fuel to monitor the effect. to our surprise, this additional oil increased power! Further dyno testing found that by adding 10 oz. of Royal Purple 2-stroke oil to 6 gallons of fuel, we gained an average of 1.7 hp from 2000-9000 RPM, along with an increase in peak power of 4 hp. We validated this increase by changing back to a "non-oiled" fuel - and the power returned to the previous level. Later, we tried the same test with another brand of synthetic oil with nearly the same results. For racing applications, the additionof a high qulaity synthetic oil increases power and most certainly decreases wear. The only negatives are the cost of the oil and an increase in the tendency to foul the spark plugs. (Note: we have not performed these test on non RX-8 engines yet, these results are unknown.)"

Wow, that is some oily gas! 21oz to the tank! That is almost 3 times as much as I use and I considered 8oz as a maximum!
77:1 is 10 oz to 6 gallons.
I do about 200:1, which is 8oz to 13 gallons of gas.
Neither of those numbers considered that amount injected by the OMP.
Rick Engman suggest 100:1 as a maximum.

I'm running a very conservative 2-4 oz. for about 12 gallons. Lately I've been using 2 oz. up in 75 degree Bay Area weather, but with the hotter weather in LA I might do 4 oz. again.

Yeah I thought so too so I called Racing Beat's tech line to see if it was a typo. They confirmed 10oz to 6 gallons specifically in the RX8. The guy went back and confirmed it with the chief engineer that did the test (didn't say who). They said that in previous rotaries they recommended 8oz per 10 gallons but in the case of the RX8 they said 10oz per 6 gallons was the right number for the stock motor they have. I also asked about fuel filter clogging and they said they hadn't put a lot of miles on the car and hadn't taken it apart yet or had any issues with it.

They specify this for racing and I imagine this would foul the spark plugs like crazy in stop in go traffic on the street. They mention it does have a tendency to do that when racing as well.

tommy even with questionable fuel pump probs--i still pre mix for the track-- i have been using 1/2 oz per gallon there.
Cooling---search man search--lots of info out there---dont use full water--does not lubricate the poor oem water pump enough. I use a 70% h20 and 30% coolant and one bottle of water wetter. I also use synthetic oil(it does run cooler). Currently i dont have any overheating problems. I have done other stuff than the above but i dont want to hyjack this thread.

Ditch the antifreeze completely. Just distilled H2O and Water Wetter. The WW is the best anti-corrosion and pump seal protectant you can get. The PEG is just reducing the heat rejection capabilities of the water.

That stuff is pretty expensive compared to the tried and true Idemitsu that can be had at mazdatrix for $4 a quart.
