To give you my "unqualified opinion" regular 4-stroke oil does not mix well with fuel & WILL clog up your injectors & fuel filter, on top of not burning well in th ecombustion chamber.
If that is not reason enough to pre-mix with propper 2-stroke... keep in mind that using the wrong oil to premix makes baby Jesus cry...

thanks white, so is only one run through of a tank of faulty premix going to clog their filters and injectors or would that only result from multiple tanks of the bad premix?
- they run their 8s pretty hard ,high rpms in all gears, regularly all day if that makes a difference

 

Depends on how "heavy" the premix ratio was, & how dirty the fuel filter was in th efirst place.

If they can dilute the premix with regular gasoline as much as possible, do so... & then add proper 2-stroke oil to the mix for the desired lubrication.

Just keep in mind that dirt in th efuel filter is cummulative... instead of lasting 6-10 years, the fuel filter could clog up in 3-4 years if you put too much "contaminants" int efuel

 

EDIT: Yes, running the 8 hard does help

1. The OMP puts out more oil under heavy acceleration, helping with lubrication
2. the increased engine temps help burn off that additional engine oil & the oil from th epremix better
3. the faster flow rate (due to the increased injector duty cycle & additional injectors opening at higher RPMs) help push some of that oil "debris" through, the filter & the injectors so it helps avoid them clogging.

4. the 8 likes to be run hard!!!

again... these are my "unqualified opiniions" your mileage may vary (& running hard WILL hurt your fuel mileage... I average 16MPG myself

I'm still on my first bottle of Lucas Semi-Syn 2 stroke which was the only JASO FD I could find at my local auto shops. I've only been using about 6oz per tank, but I've noticed my mileage has remained pretty consistent at around 15 to 15.5mpg in mostly street driving, with frequent stops & moderate traffic. I also drive pretty aggressive.

I was getting a bit less with MMO only, about 1mpg less on average, rarely above 15mpg.

Lucas UCL had about the same MPG results as the semi-syn 2 stroke does. Which leads me to believe that either one seems to work well in my rotary.

I haven't tried idemitsu yet, but I found out that Mazdatrix isn't too far from me and I might just take a trip there and purchase a few bottles.

Either way, premixing has made a noticeable improvement on my rx8. Before I was only getting an avg of 12 to 12.5mpg without any fuel additive under aggressive driving conditions. My Rotors must have had some carbon on them that was gradually burned off as I began to premix.

 

Here is why you should premix: you read all kinds of post here about engine failures. Well since 1973 I have owned an RX3, two RX4s (sedan and coupe), all three generations of RX7 and a 40th Anniversary Edition RX8. In those 38 yrs I have driven easily a million rotary miles on the street and track in my stock and race-modified RXs. (two of these Racing Beat heavily modified RXs were pushing 500hp) I have NEVER had a rotary engine failure, ever, even the race cars. And I have premixed all my rotary engines from day one.

I have used two stroke oil, and premixs from Amsoil over the years and the Idemitsu, both fine. My favorite, and the one I use now is the Pettit Racing Protek-R. The Protek has been extsensively street and racing tested and proven. It contains some proprietary synthetic ingredients to make it compatible with the rotary seals,and to totally combust in the rotary engine. Total combustion is a key to any good premix after it has done its lubricating job.

There are lots of common sense tips to keeping your rotary engine healthy, but premix is a must, no matter if you have the two oil injector series one engine or the three oil injector series two RX8 engine.

Anyway Protek isn't any magic proprietary formula, just some rebranded snowmobile oil. The truth is that any non-marine 2 stroke oil will do just fine.

Well, that would be appropriate considering the engine we're talking about.

 

What are the opinions on rotary's that have in excess of 75k miles and have never premixed? I know two original owners that use regular unleaded, don't premix and have never had a problem with their RX8's.

 

Not uncommon, there are many modes of failure. Remember each motor is hand built.

 

Not sure, but add me to that list (kind of). I bought my 8 used a few months ago with about 51k miles on it and the previous owners didn't premix. And I thought the car ran just fine then.

Since I've been premixing though, my rotary idles smoother, starts up faster (better than my new-ish tacoma prerunner did), gets better mileage and is just an overall a better running engine. Premixing definitely made a difference.

 

I wasn't going to post until I read the whole thread but I'm only on page 71 and I got my Amsoil Sabre Pro today. I just bought a dozen 3.5 oz bottles and my question is do you think its a waste if I only put 3.5 oz in every time Im down to 1/4 tank of gas. I was thinking of topping the bottle up with some FP Plus but thats down the road when I find some lol. My omp is stock and working. Thanks Also there is 16k on the car.

 

That one bottle is some insurance for the seals, and you can double that, but I wouldn't mess with the premix by adding FP.

Don't over think it, just add any good premix, and read 2 cycle oil test reviews.
