Interesting. This is similar to what Tim was telling me. He would not put a ball bearing turbo in place of the GReddy. He said something about cooling isn't enough on them either in that location...even when water cooled...or something to that effect. Don't quote me on that though. I do know he said it wasn't a good option for the greddy setup anyways. Does that make sens to you at all Bryan?

I don't know how much stock to put into it, but still what I was offered was decent enough for price vs. turnaround time vs. some increased reliability

That is the 2.75" inlet

I may have to change up compressor housings for the 60-1. Its been a while since I have see the compressor housing off the 8 greddy kit. Does anyone have a picture on one that way it would refresh my memory?

This is the best pic I have of the GReddy T618Z compressor housing that is included with the RX8 GReddy kit:

Here is the GReddy assembled for reference:

And apart; turbine housing, CHRA, and compressor housing:

IMO it still looks like the GT3071R is the best option for a low mounted turbo setup. Top mounted is a different animal due to almost unlimited size constraints.

Hey Bryan - are you reffering to the apex seal coming out into the turbo? I am not aware that anyone has had that issue with a Renny since we don't have the same exhuast port design and the seals tend to stay in the motor.

Or did I miss-interpret something?

I have seen apex seals gone through the turbocharger from a Renny 13B. The one that I got last week to build I had to replace the turbine b/c of apex damage. The bad thing if an apex breaks, it ruins irons, rotor housings and rotors in a RX8 engine.

I have put a GT35R in a Mitsubishi turbo. But it is a prototype going in my truck when I have a fresh engine to put in it. There is no need to put a BB CHRA b/c the CHRA that you have can be modified to outflow the exhaust housing. Thats your limitation after upgrading the CHRA.

Chicken,

That picture is a T04E .50 a/r. The 60-1 hi-fi has a TO4B compressor cover. The T4 family has 4 different types of compressor housings.

T04B smallest housing (.50 a/r-.85 a/r can come with a variety of inlet sizes 2.5-4", 4" is pretty rare also the .85 a/r is extinct)

T04E/T04S medium housing ( can come different a/r's .50-.70 a/r typically 3"-4" inlets

T04S04 large housing (mainly comes in .55 a/r 3 or 4" inlets. All are big shaft turbos. Up to a 76mm inducer from garrett).

/\ when my apex went it took the housing with it but nothing else - guess it depends .....

why would an apex do any more damage to a bb turbine than it would to a journal bearing turbine ?

It is virtually impossible for any significant pieces of a seal to exit the engine on the Renesis. Anything that would make it to the exhaust port will be, for the most part, pulp by the time it makes it to the turbine.

It wouldn't. The "damage" would be exactly the same and the cost to repair exactly the same.

In this application, a journal bearing turbo is going to have a very limited lifespan because of the oiling difficulties and very high temperatures.

A water-cooled BB turbo has none of these weaknesses.

Garrett doesn't offer rebuild parts including service kits for the dual ball bearing series nor do they offer turbine wheel replacements as a single part. You are required to send in a "core" to Garrett and they fix it. Minimum $500 on just bearing replacements plus the turbine wheel and shaft replacement.

No, authorized dealers can replace individual parts and the "core" replacement, if you need it, is a LOT less than that.

I will check tomorrow with the US top 3 Garrett Distributers. I have asked them before on getting rebuild parts, but they would not release them to me as of around 6 months ago.

Also check out this thread in a VW forum. $600 for a replacement CHRA and $750 plus for a new turbo.

Bryan,

do you know the measurements of the stock compressor and turbine wheel on the FC stock turbo? I never measured mine when I still had it. How does it compare to the Greddy 18G? I figure they would be pretty close actually, with the 18G probably being a little more efficient at higher boost levels.

I get all my Garrett parts from a local distributor.
He puts everything together for me right on the bench.
I can buy each individual part as needed.
I just bought a turbine housing yesterday and he had a stack of wheels in boxes.

Alright I called Limit Engineering. They said if there was any damage to the turbine wheel, they have to buy a new Center Housing Rotating Assembly. They can get the bearing assemblies and do bearing repairs, but piece parts such as bearing housings, turbine wheels they can not get and they are one of the biggest Garrett Distributers in the US.

Turbine housings are over the counter.

If you can buy each individual part, please send me a Garrett GT28R bearing housing in a OE Garrett box untampered with the Garrett part number sticker on the box. I need it for a build.

Get a better distributor or build a better relationship with the one you have. I don't know what else to tell you.

Turbine inducer: 2.51"
Turbine exducer: 2.15"

Compressor inducer: 1.72"
Compressor exducer: 2.48"

For a rotary I would want the HT18 wheel over the 18g. flows more volume at a lower pressure.

I need a bearing housing in the original box untampered. I asked if you could get it for me since you know someone that can get you the parts... I am willing to pay you for it.
