AL Norad's Turbo Information Verification Thread (NTIVT)

Well, after a LOT of research and reading on the forum, and finding a KICK *** deal on a used Greddy kit, I am taking the plunge! The kit was used for about 5k miles and I am going to pick it up the beginning of next month in Flordia. He had performed all three of the big "Fixes" as listed in the sticky for the Greddy kit. Everything looks in great shape, and I can't find any visual cues of the thing having been mistreated or abused. I have read KONIG's Turbo thread, the Greddy fix thread, and mysql's thread while doing my research. AMAZING information, but I wanted to summarize what I have put into my brain in order to make sure what I am planning is the best route and that I am not missing something huge.

So first off, I need an AccessPort. The Emange Ulimate belongs on eBay and in some ricer Honda. This means I need a new intake, a blow off valve, set to recirculate, and the AccessPort itself (duh). I have read of two solutions to the intake: a modified Mazsport intake or modified AEM intake. I remember reading something along the lines that the one, or both, of the above were the wrong diameter and had to be modified to match the stock intakes MAF piping size. Am I confused or is this a valid assumption? Since Mazsport is dead, I am guessing my only real alternative is to modify an AEM intake?

Second, when you buy a BOV, does it come with a flange and gasket that you get welded to the intake pipe? I know you get a bung welded on the intake AFTER the MAF for recirculation, but how do you get the BOV on the stupid pipe that goes into the intake manifold?

Third, I need to buy all new silicon hoses and connectors. Awesome! Where do you recommend I go about buying these? i found a parts list of what I need from rotaryinsider.com, but who sells this stuff at the best price?

Fourth, I need a boost controller and a turbo timer. I was thinking of keeping my eyes on the FS/T forum and pick up something used.

Lastly, how does tuning this thing work? I read the post on how to give MazdaManiac the information he needs to generate your tune. But that requires WOT pulls in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. But wait! I thought you had to stay out of boost until the car is tuned... Is there a generic Greddy map that you can load up and use to get the data for him?

The only other stuff I know I am going to need to address is cooling and gauges. I was planning on the turbo heat shield from Pettit and wrapping up the downpipe and such with heatwrap. Are upgraded radiators, the mazmart waterpump upgrade, and the new thermostat I read about in the forum all needed for the stock Greddy kit? What about ceramic coating? Is this just for looks or really necessary to keep temps down? What of these are really needed to run this kit at the stock 6ish PSI?

As far as gauges go, I was planning on having a boost gauge and an AFR gauge. I have heard people recommend EGT as well. What do I really need to monitor other than boost and AFR?

Well, that is pretty much it. I want to reiterate I don't plan on going crazy here with future mods. I just want a little more power and zip that the stock Greddy kit can provide, but at the same time I want to do it RIGHT so I reduce the chances of anything bad happening. As a disclaimer before I get flamed, I UNDERSTAND that with any F/I **** can happen. I got enough money saved I can have the engine rebuilt if necessary. I also have alternative modes of transportation to work and lots of breaks in between my training to fiddle and such. My car is in good mechanical shape, and this is not my first rotary. Had an 1984 GSL-SE in the family for 20 years. At the same time, however, I don't want to spend money on stuff I really don't need. The car is paid off, I like the styling and the ability to carry four people. Why trade it in for something else with more power when it will be WAY cheaper, even if I DO rebuild the engine in 50-75k miles, to turbo the RX-8 than get a whole new car note for some BMW or Audi in the $35,000+ range? Anyways, have I hit the nail on the head with what I need to do? Thank God I have you guys to make sure I am not an idiot and forgot something.

Thanks!
