The only thing I have ever seen was a 5 speed replacement that was upgraded for the RX7. Never seen an upgraded 6 speed. I woulda thought that since the tranny is an Asain, it would be pretty decent.

Final gearing was changed, the reverse gear is actually in the top left instead of bottom right, different transmission housing. That's all I can recall...

Big deal.

We need a tranny that can handle some HP.

I figured I'd start a new thread because my gear chart got buried pages deep within the misinformation of the other thread.

The 'strengthened' transmission, is acutally the MX-5 transmission. I saw a new RX-8 version of it when I was in the Mazda Tech center in Irvine last month. This is 100% confirmed. Completely different transmission, with slightly different ratios than the current Aisin box.

Provided the ratios don't change from the MX-5 transmission, the following should be a very accurate gear chart showing the differences between an '04-'08 car and the '09 R3. I omitted 1st gear from this, but first is significantly shorter, so it will run out sooner.

I'll work to verify that the ratios aren't going to change. We hope to have a test-mule transmission here to play with in a month or so, and when we do I'll let everyone know how it holds up.

I question the economy of replacing the 6sp with a old/rebuilt 5 speed.

I would rather address the weak areas of the original or new 6spd.

i wish there was some type of option for an upgrade i was thinking about a T-56 as well but i wonder how much of the work of getting a bellhouseing and such to work and to make it fit properly, i know the guy on the RX7 site use the T-56 with no problems on theres i need soemthing i can beat up on sometimes . My friend has one in his mustange with a pro shifter and shifting gears the handle barley moves an inch, only thing tho i dont want a hard a clutch pedal,

The t56 is pretty easy swap... not cheap but well worth it in the end.
