hmm well the problem has disappeared completely now. im almost positive that it was because the MAF got wet. it must have gotten wet when i washed my car. at least now i know not to drive my car right after i wash it!
Ok to drive it around to dry it out so long as you don't go into boost and go lean .
Or just don't get your air filter wet!
That is the one reason I don't like the AEM setup for turbo. I mean, it's not a huge deal, it would only suck if you were driving and got caught in some rain and then you couldn't go into boost. At least it makes the MAF sensor read high instead of low so you generally won't run lean

update:
car is still running strong, have had no problems yet! going on to about 8000 miles on the greddy turbo now (car had about 40000 miles when i put the turbo on, now i got around 48000).
everything seems to be holding up so far! just wanted to give a little update =]

i was wondering if anyone with the AEM intake setup with a turbo knows of a way to make water NOT get on the filter when it rains/when you wash the car.
would the only way be to make some sort of shield for it? or is there a simpler way?

The sock does a pretty damn good job if you're not intentionally spraying water on it. But that's in the NA position.. Do you not keep it in the same place? Or is it moved up ontop of the front bumper support like the Mazsport was?

Do you notice a difference when it is wet?
I remember Brettus noticed water going down to his filter so he basically diverted the water away by putting beads on the bumper support bracket.

and yeah i basically cant boost when the filter is wet, the car goes super rich and misfires because the MAF is getting sprayed with water being sucked in. the car just bogs and goes nowhere lol. very noticeable. if i stay out of boost when the filter is wet everything is normal.

i believe he just applied silicone beads on sections of the support bar so that the water that goes between the hood and bumper drips around the filter. though his filter is positioned where the vfad is.
50,000 miles now on my 8, about 10k of those with turbo
still have slight tuning issues. i recently reflashed the same map onto the car and now it is running lean in boost =[
stays around 12-12.8's if i go into boost and i have heard slight detonation so i have been staying out of boost lately. i will hopefully get these issues tuned out at the next dyno day.
the one thing that is really confusing me is this: when i am going faster than 60 mph and i am giving it constant throttle (enough to keep it a taad bit more than at a constant speed) the AFRs are at 14.5-14.9. the wierd thing is, if i keep the throttle the same for more than 30ish seconds at this speed, then after 30 seconds the AFRs start climbing to around 15 then 16 and it has even neared 17. whenever it does this i let off the throttle and then get on it again and it goes back to 14.7 until another 30ish seconds goes by.
anyone know what could be causing this? i feel a slight hesitation in power when it goes this lean but no dramatic power loss or anything. no detonation either. shouldnt it be going richer after being at constant throttle for that long?

What are your ltft's after the trims have been settled? I was running lean in boost for a while and I believe it was due to my ltft's basically settling at +7 (when before it was -6). I suspected it was a vacuum leak but I could not find it.
Your AFRs climbing at constant throttle is most likely the transition to open loop. MazdaManiac runs it lean in open loop during cruise for fuel efficiency (as long as you don't have a cat). Some cars can take up to 16-17:1, some don't like it.
Either way, I believe Jeff will be able to fix your tune at the next dyno day.

ill check next time i drive to see what the ltft's are

LTFT is sitting at 4 and 5 after car has been warmed up and driven around. would cleaning the maf affect anything? maybe it has gotten dirty from water hitting it (when the aem filter gets wet)
here is the data log. i guess somehow by reflashing the same map the tune changed or something changed since the last time i reflashed the map which was a few months ago.
i cant think of anything that i have changed besides switching from RB exhaust to HKS hi power exhaust. that and the maf may be a bit dirty, but thats it. no other changes.
i have a turbo and im more scared of carbon build up killing my engine than i am of the power blowing my engine, thats pretty bad haha...

so im pretty much certain now that the weather definately changes my afrs. for some reason right when it started raining, my AFRs went back down to 11.2ish in boost. and also the problem i was having with it going lean in open loop when i go above 65ish mph is gone and now it goes down to 13.8 afr.
how does the weather make such a big difference!
