Hymee Supercharger Owners Thread

As I understand it, more of you are finally receiving the balance of the Hymee S/C kit and have installs underway. Some have PMed me and I am happy to communicate in that fashion but I thought a thread to exchange ideas and compare notes might be helpful.

I know that Danny already has some modifications in mind and I'm sure other experienced modifiers will have their own ideas.

Feel free to drop in here and share them...

To kick it off in a minor way, I am shortly to install a second oil cooler (we don't get them standard like the US cars) and some gauges for oil temp/pressure and boost. What add ons are the rest of you planning for cooling and monitoring purposes?

Still waiting on the final shipment here....but ready to get started.

As for monitoring, right now I'm only looking at boost and AFR. I won't be 'tracking' this car and living in a cold climate, I'm not too worried about oil temp at this time. I'll do some measurements on oil temp and intercooler discharge temp with a separate thermocouple right after the install, but no plans for a permanent gauge on either right now....

Have you been having oil temp problems down under with only 1 cooler?

No but I will be tracking the car, so it's essential that I can keep an eye on it during longer sessions.

Our climate is temperate, so I'm not worried about street driving...

Pardon my ignorance but 'AFR'?

AFR - Air/Fuel Ratio, also expressed as a numerical value as lambda, with ideal lambda being 1.0. A measurement of the actual stoichiometric value of the fuel/air mixture for a given fuel vs. the ideal ratio of fuel and air for complete fuel burn. Smaller AFRs and lambdas indicate a richer than chemically optimal mixture; larger values indicate leaner mixtures. Target AFRs for pump gas are in the 12:1 ratio range.

AFRs are best measured using a wideband O2 sensor in the exhaust and are used in dyno tuning to refine fueling maps.

I'm predicting at the start these owners will see 275whp with more later on after they get their tunes dialed in, with a lot of clinking of cans of Fosters

I may have to test my manhood and get a pack of Fosters to toast their success...

Guages are good. Coolant temps are more likly to be an issue then oil temps. Instead of a second oil cooler, I would suggest you install a larger more efficient oil cooler with new lines and a real oil thermostat. This will improve oil cooling, oil pressure and the oil will get up to temp faster.

In place of a second oil cooler, install an oil cooler plumbed into the heater core heater hoses.

You might have to wait a bit on the install until Dan's finger tips grow back...

AFR and lambda are not the same thing. The stoichiometric ratio is always 1.0 in lambda, but the AFR for a lambda of 1.0 is variable for different fuels. For gasoline, it is 14.7:1. For E85 it is 9.7:1.

I don't even know what this sentence means.

Target for what?
The stoichiometric (chemically optimal) ratio you allude to above sets a "target" of 14.7:1 for gasoline (1.0λ). Optimal AFR depends on a multitude of factors, but I am unaware of any condition on any sort of RX-8 where 12:1 is optimal.
On an NA vehicle, optimum power generally occurs around 13:1 (.88λ). On a boosted vehicle, optimum power is around 11.5:1 (.91λ).
The actual "mean" target is bracketed by rich and lean values that are also considered "optimal".

I'm not telling

If you and dan get your crap installed quickly, you can join us in Portland for a supercharger throwdown with dondo - if I can get more people to sign up that is....
