if you must have the sound, get a hybrid valve like the one from GFB. it has a vent and a plumback with a dial that divides the air up to 100% either way. recirc at the track (it will drive like **** if you don't, but shoot BIIIIIIIG flames), and on the street too to preserve your MPG. just twist it to atmosphere when you want to bling!
Okay guys, I just got back from the shop.. not finished installing yet.. had about a billion people run in and out of the shop all day distracting MY mechanic.. the nerve of some people.. we'll finish tomorrow.. as soon as I eat some dinner I will post the pics of todays progress.
Okay guys, here we go... they are in order of completion.. I'll write a short description of each step.
Here we are unpacking the kit at the shop! I'm about as excited as you can get!
Here we are unpacking the kit at the shop! I'm about as excited as you can get!
Here we are removing the battery and battery box, also took out the stock Intake (forgot to take a pic of that). After that we went ahead and took the front bumper off.. I thought the bumper was going to be a pain in the butt, but it took all of 5 minutes to take it off!
Now that we had the catalytic converter off, we had to disconnect the rear right engine mount in order to take the stock manifold off.. That wasn't too difficult.
Now that the engine mount was disconnected, we were able to take the stock manifold off.. Here are pics of the exhaust ports with the manifold off, and my gracious goodbye to the stock manifold.
Now we went ahead and applied the heat shield tape that came with the kit. We put the heat shield tape on the firewall near the right front wheel, and also on the intake manifold. This stuff is top notch, very good quality. Forms well and once you put it on, you can't get it off.. it's there to stay!
Next we went ahead and started putting on the oil feed line for the turbo itself. Getting the oil pressure sensor off was a pain in the butt.. not too much room to work there. The oil feed line connects to the spot the oil pressure sensor was at by using a T fitting, then the sensor plugs in on one side and the oil feed line on the other. Here are pics of the fitting and the oil line which is routed over the transmission and ready to connect to the turbo.
Okay, now we attach the NEW and improved exhaust manifold. But first we must place the turbo up and rest it on one of the suspension control arms. Then we were able to install the new exhaust manifold.
Now that the manifold is secured, we mount the turbo onto the manifold. This is where we called the night. Was getting late, and both myself and Jim (my mechanic) were just plain tired.. not neccesarily from the install, but from the 4 hours that were wasted dealing with people that kept coming by and dragging his attention from the more important task at hand.. Installing a Turbo on an RX-8! Here are the last of the pics for today.

I second that, thanks for all the pics of install in progress. That is sweet, can't wait until tomorrow to see the next installment.
PS I will have a hard time sleeping tonight waiting for you to wrap it up and post your new turbo rx8.
Dont mean to mention something that may have already been mentioned, but are you doing anything different with the tranny or clutch? Just curious. If it's already been asked, just call me a dumbass and I'll go about my own business! :D
Oh yeah, a friend of mine with an NA RX-8 is going to come too. So I can get take video of a stock 8 and compare it to a turbo 8. I can't host the video myself, but I already have someone who volunteerd to host it for me.
Nope, I'm going to abuse this clutch until it blows, then put in a better performing clutch. I don't do full launched from a standstill too often, so I don't forsee this clutch going out. I'm not running enough boost for the added torque to kill the clutch, I don't think
Time will tell.. hehe

What is that round thingy on the exhaust side of the turbo just below the impellor? Visible in the last photo. I'm not turbo savvy.
Oh yeah... thanks so much for the photo documentation. Makes me feel better since I can't enjoy the install first hand!
