The 09 pump assembly doesn't drop in tho, does it? And it's around $450?

 

There is a DIY thread for 09 pump into 04-08's. Its not a direct drop in as its orientation and some fittings changed. It can be had for ~$300 bucks.

The walbro for ~$100 bucks is a drop in and good place for me to start. If I find that I go much more aggressive with my car setup that I need more I'd upgrade to the 09 pump and move the walbro to the passenger side and run dual pumps.

we need 1/2 lb of fuel per hr per h/p right? as a bear minimum?
what is the flow rate of the oem pumps?

I have this issue and it all started because i had starved my fuel pump 2 months back when my fuel is low and high rev, I had the lost power issue .... and last few days, when I went for long distance drives, the symptom appeared whenever my fuel is less than half tank and get worse when it is 1/4 left....

My question is that if I am not changing the fuel pump, but keep the petrol above half tank, will there be any issue that I need to note? I am ordering a new OEM pump but haven't arrived yet....

By the way, is it advisable to fit the 2009 FP to our 2004 model?

 

Starvation above half tank is something very sporadic and with VERY worn out pumps. You won't have many problems

We have a lot of guys here experiencing pinging problems because of sad combination of old flashes (poor lubrication) and worn out fuel pumps. When they re-tune the metering pump and swap the fuel pump the problem disappears.

That means as long as I keep my tank above half mark, I should be fine for the time, don't high rev the car until I change the fuel pump?

 

I'd have a dealer look at it if its still under warranty. If not, $100 bucks and you're back in business.

 

Mine is never under any dealer 's warranty... as we imported our 8 thru Grey importers many years ago....

 

Fuel pump installed. First time out when around some hard corners and then fuel pressure dropped out. No start issue. Could hear the pump click on and run, but no start. Pulled assembly back apart and found my crimp clamp wasn't tight enough. Removed and put 2 new ones on. So far its running.

No part store within 60 miles had any non crimp style fuel injector clamps small enough for the walbro pump. So hoping 2 crimp clamps set 120 degrees apart will suffice.

Personal recommendation, get the right tool to remove the plastic lock ring. Once you break a tab off, it goes down hill from there.

Still having issues with fuel cut out. 1/3 tank of fuel. After a quick lap (just shy of a mile, mostly square run with a few extra curves) AFRs spike and engine stutters. Turned car off, waited 2 minutes, started back up, AFR fine at idle, still high AFR under any throttle. Shut car off, waited another 2 minutes. Started back up, AFR fine at idle, still high AFRs under any throttle. I drove it back home going really slow and using minimal throttle. After about a mile down the road AFRs return to normal. I test with a few quick throttle blips, AFRs seem fine.

Is this the pressure blow off? I did enlarge the siphon venturi to 1/8 inch using a normal drill bit. Or is this the pump getting air and it working its way out of the system?

Maybe BHR would like to offer a service where we ship our fuel pump assembly to them, they install the pump and do the necessary mods and ship the assembled unit back to the customer?

 

bigger pumps are great and sorely need---bu they do not solve all problems with our system.

Well it seems that the new pump has taken my fuel cutouts from 2.7 gallons shy of a full tank to 1/2 tank according to the fuel gauge. Almost thinking I have some bad plumping in the fuel system...

I have given feedback to BHR and am waiting to see what they say. Maybe my fuel pump assembly will become a donor in part of their experiment with fuel pumps. The 09 fuel pump assembly is looking tastier every day.

 

I am looking for anyone that has an extra fuel pump assembly that I can purchase from them. Looking for spares to test out some ideas.

The '07 - '08 are the same as the '04 - '06.
Only '09 got a new pump.

I've found the solution for the 1/4-tank-empty fuel pump run-out.

 

I would just upgrade the pump you have and be done with the drama...

The 09 pump isn't that much of an upgrade really...and a lot more expensive than higher flow other options that have been mentioned already in this thread

 

there are 3 things i like about the 09 pump
1---the outlet to the engine is from the bottom--helping with air bubbles from cavitation
2- the cup design is rx8 specific
3-its a denso pump with a changeable filter and a better sock.
it does solve everything but it is a better assembly
+its genuine mazda parts made in the usa

I already have the upgraded pump and the mods as per MM's DIY write up. I experienced fuel cutouts at 1 tick above 3/4 of a tank this last Sunday at USA International Raceway in Shawano, WI. And I was running the shitty OEM tires, Dunlop SP 8090 (which drift quite nicely by the way). Hence why I am looking for more fuel pump assemblies to experiment on.

 

now I have a question. If the OE top "O" ring is e-used instead of the a 1/2 height one, the bottom sock retainer will bulge out and more difficult to snap back on. What other possible longevity issues could be caused by using the OE "O" ring?

Pemature failure of the sock retainer?
Would the fuel flow to the sock be shunted? (This would be because of the gap between the bottome of the sock and basket is reduced)

I know I can get back in there and replace the "O" ring. I just don't like smelling like gas.

 

I'm keeping an eye on this thread! The symptoms in the OP describe pretty much what has been happening to me at AutoX and I need to fix that for next year.

Sadly our events are done for this year but that just means I don't need to rush to fix anything as it's still mostly fine on the street.

MM updated his write up for the high flow pump installation. Make sure you pay ATTENTION to last few lines. Specifically regarding the pressure blow off cap.

Huh? The problem is the opposite - you need more "O" ring height to get the pump to sit in the proper position.
It won't "bulge", it'll fall in!
You put the additional "O" ring on the pump above the existing factory "O" ring.
Look at the pictures of the pumps. The Walbro has a lower shoulder that needs to be accommodated.
