Very good thread indeed, I had to revive it since I am all wondering what the best idea will be for the APV's for my setup, NA Renesis for now but very soon Turbo Charged. Using a Haltech Sprint RE EMS. I can't seem to understand if this Haltech controls the APV's or not at all..

I'm sure the answer and resultant discussion is buried somewhere in the thread, but you have a 3 - 4 PSI drop from the turbo to the UIM?!?

Here's a Flip for the Topic; How about,

leaving the AUX Port Flaps freely, as in neither open or shut but leave them to do

on their own.. What would happen then.. Hmm ?

It would be pretty stupid thing to do from a tuning perspective, not to mention that they don't flap. IMO they should either be locked in the closed position or actuated open, but never locked open.

They've been locked open on my engine for the past year 'cause we keep melting the actuator....

And without a locking mechanism they stay where they're put, I tried it before making a pin to hold them just in case.

Using boost/vac to activate the AUX valves may not be a bad idea.

it has been discussed quite a few times here . Basically "flaps open" gives you reduced torque at low rpm and stock torque from 6500rpm onwards.

Closed gives you stock torque up to 6500 and reduced torque/power above that .

I might have skimped thru this Topic just a little but I don't think Phillip has said anything on how his ride performs earlier.. Insight from someone who is actually using the mod is always helpful.

Definately lost some power under ~3.5k but I've moved the other port opening times around to compensate instead, so it's not too bad, still pulls cleanly from the bottom, idle is still rock steady, etc, tbh our engine is only under 3.5k when it's idling or driving around the service area anyway so didn't really bother me.

It makes peak torque at just over 5krpm but obviously the intake/exhaust/fuel system, etc, means it not really comparable to an otherwise stock engine, it makes 90% of that from 3.5k to 7k, even with the ports open.

Tbh, it'd probably be emissions it would upset the most from poor fuel atomisation, however, without some optimisation of the the other port openings and mapping, the initial dyno with them simply locked open all the time on the normal (I.E, valve switchable) mapping did cost almost 30lbft of torque loss down low.
Some dyno work negated most of that from 3.5k upwards, but there's still a loss down low.

Very nice, I want to see what my setup will ride like, ports open, full 3 in. exhaust on a "Base RX8 Map" that came in the Haltech Sprint RE, further tunning will be needed on-board the StarQuest with the Laptop

What tuning software are you using to change the APV settings?

I think I understand what Brettus is getting at now though.

I actually just lowered my APV to 4800 for my run to grab lunch. Its wet out so I was only at a couple psi, but the car was like "LETS GO!" when they opened. Cant wait to try it with full boost. I had actually not touched those settings at all till today.

Look more carefully

You might also want to understand you have an automatic...that doesn't have APV valves in the first place

if you lock the apv's open you will suck up extremely hot "air" into you UIM during decel. Been there done that and measured it. I will never do it again.
