violence has never really solved anything except removing the feeling of being threaten. If someone else is really out to kill you or someone else and you have to take them out---yea you removed that threat. But, at what cost? You will always wonder if there was something different that could have been done.
The victors are the ones that have learned to never let things get to the point in which violence is required. To not do so is failure.

While I totally agree with this philosophy, the reality is, unfortunately, the converse.
The only way that works is if everybody - without exception - agrees with it.
As soon as you have an individual that does not, you need another individual to counter that "dissenter".
If you have only sheep, you need no herder. But, should there be a wolf, there is little to be gained by trying to convince him that being a sheep is a better way of life. You will need the herder to protect the sheep.

I actualy had a conversation about a similar topic with the professer of my World Religions class a few years back. He was a devoted Buddhist and I was trying to make the argument that a true buddhist (by deffinition non-violent) could infact engage combat and even kill his oponent without compromising belief. It went something like the argument below...

"In any escolated situation there is a "point of no return" where it is clear that someone is going to lose their cool and physicaly hurt or kill some one. As long as you were convinced that there is, in the moment, no alternative but to confront the attacker to save the suffering of others then it is moraly justified.

Also to be able to fight/defend with feelings of calm/understanding/empathy for your oponent is essential and will lead to the best possible and most just outcome for him/her(the attacker). Only in the last moments when it is clear there is no alternitive would a budhist sentence his attacker to death and be true to his beliefs in doing so."

Now, I have to admit I was not able to convince my professure entierly of this line of logic but he did conceed that I had some good points...

That said the above is basicly what I live by. Intervene when nessecary only up to the point it is needed. And if "justice" needs to be served then I do it with sincere remorse that an alternative could not be found....

Too bad this thread is getting closed its just getting good!

On another note stick, i wouldn't take too much of this personaly. It looks like to me that everyone has gotten caughtup in the mental exercise of trying to piece this mystery together. Idle hands/minds are the devils work shop... 8)
