The picture he showed was of the lotek pod... which your right, it does go on top. You can also find it occasionally on e-bay, that is where I got mine.

After you remove your center dash piece you need to cut a hole in it. You then glue the pod to it and clamp it down until the clue drys. It will look like this when done.

Yes, it is just an accessory plug for the radar detector... haven't gotten around to hard-wiring it yet. The gauges I got are oil pressure, oil temp, and coolant temp. The gauges are from prosport, which many on the site have. I looked at past transactions and lotek on ebay login name is lotekengineering. The gauges are from http://prosportgauges.com/.

^ don't rely too much on the stock gauges. they aren't very accurate -- especially the oil pressure gauge

All that shows is if you've got pressure or not.... I like watching mine bounce up and down w/ the throttle.

For me about a 3. My temperment isn't suited to this time consuming task...... at times I just wanted to use a hammer. It is just basically pulling wires and keeping them straight, but I read through other install threads to find the wires to tap. GL w/ your install.
